A Comparative Study Of Phenolics In Chestnut (Castanea), And Their Relationships With Resistance To Endothia Parasitica, Paul Edward Barnett Dec 1972

A Comparative Study Of Phenolics In Chestnut (Castanea), And Their Relationships With Resistance To Endothia Parasitica, Paul Edward Barnett

Doctoral Dissertations

American chestnut (Castanea dentata Borkh.) was a highly valued forest species in the Appalachian region prior to introduction of the chestnut blight fungus (Endothia parasitica (Murr.) A. & A.), which practically eliminated it. Since no control method has been devised and oriental species and hybrids are not generally satisfactory replacements, breeding resistant individuals through selection offers some hope of reestablishment. A chemical method for screening resis-tant individuals for retention in a breeding program would be of great benefit. Since phenolic compounds have been implicated in disease resistance of some cultivated crops and forest and fruit trees, this study is an …

An Investigation Of The Variables Affecting Steam Condensation On The Outside Of A Horizontal Tube Bundle, David Martin Eissenberg Dec 1972

An Investigation Of The Variables Affecting Steam Condensation On The Outside Of A Horizontal Tube Bundle, David Martin Eissenberg

Doctoral Dissertations

The accurate prediction of the thermal performance of large multitube steam condensers for application to the distillation desalination of seawater depends on the availability of correlations for calculating each of the film heat transfer coefficients for individual tubes located within the condenser as a function of local conditions. Although correlations are available, there have been few experimental verifications of their accuracy or even of their validity in the specific application to desalination, particularly with respect to the two film coefficients associated with the condensation process, the condensate film heat transfer coefficient and the non-condensable gas film heat transfer coefficient.

The Influence Of William Godwin On The Novels Of Mary Shelley, Katherine Richardson Powers

Doctoral Dissertations

The past few decades have seen a revival of interest in the social philosophy of William Godwin and a revaluation of his works. Although Godwin has been viewed as a powerful influence on the works of Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley, little notice has been taken of his influence on the work of his daughter, Mary Shelley. It has, on the contrary, been popular to attribute Mary's Frankenstein to the influence of her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Many critics have recognized a close connection between the works of Godwin and Mary, but the comments are limited and general; and most studies …

Estimating The Investment Behavior Of Farm Firms Using The Concept Of National Distributed Lag Functions, Billy J. Trevena

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to estimate the investment behavior function of individual farm firms using the concept of rational dis-tributed lag functions developed by Jorgenson to estimate the time structure of the investment process. The fundamental flexible acceler-ator model was used to estimate the investment behavior function. The model assumed net investment to be a lagged function of all changes in desired capital. Desired capital was assumed to be proportional to net farm income and gross farm income, respectively, for the expected profits and accelerator theories of investment. Because of the importance of the proper specification of the …
