The Effect Of Insect Damage On Indian Ricegrass (Oryzopsis Hymenoides) In Western Utah, Luis S. Guerra

Theses and Dissertations

Indian ricegrass at the Desert Range Experiment Station forty-seven miles west of Milford, Utah, is damaged by the larvae of Coenchroa illibella, Diatrae sp. and Typoceris ceraticornis, the latter being the most destructive. The biology of the insects and the extent of damage inflicted are discussed. Uninfested plants produced more new stems than infested plants. Plants having a basal diameter of 4 to 6.9 cm and 7 to 9.9 cm were the most frequently infested and, consequently, the most severely damaged.

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A Microprogramned Branch Driver (MBD) is the interface between Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-11 series computers and a multicrate CAMAC system. The MBD is a microprocessor-controlled multiple, direct memory access (DMA) channel branch driver.

The requirements for an MBD are discussed in the introduction and stem from a Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) study group report on the design of the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) data acquisition system. Because of the desire for the standard system, the types of experiments and data rates, and the varying complexity of the data acquisition systems, it was decided that a …

A Probabilistic Approach To The Design Of Heat Pipes, Charles C. Roberts Jr. Dec 1972

A Probabilistic Approach To The Design Of Heat Pipes, Charles C. Roberts Jr.

Mechanical Engineering ETDs

The design of heat pipes involves knowledge of phenomena such as surface tension forces, wick permeability, and fluid vaporization and condensation. Considerable variability in these phenomena has been observed in heat pipe experiments. Thus, a probabilistic design model for predicting heat pipe heat transfer rate has been developed taking into consideration uncertainty in the prediction of the above phenomena. The probabilistic model yields a mean, a standard deviation, and the distribution of heat transfer rate based on the means, standard deviations, and distributions of the design parameters. The probabilistic method is compared to experimental data from heat pipes with wire …

First Measurements Of Earth Albedo Neutrons In Space, James R. Place Dec 1972

First Measurements Of Earth Albedo Neutrons In Space, James R. Place

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

NASA satellite OSO-6 carried as part of its payload a proton recoil telescope capable of detecting neutrons between 40 and 200 MeV with directional discrimination. Sixteen months of data from this instrument were analyzed with a view to determining properties of the earth albedo neutron flux above the atmosphere.

The variation of albedo neutron flux with geomagnetic latitude was found to be 1:4 between 0° and 40°. The angular distribution shows that about 40% fewer neutrons come upward from directly beneath the satellite compared to the number coming from a direction tangential to the top of the atmosphere. These results …

Elastic-Plastic Poisson's Ratio Of Borsic-Reinforced Aluminium Composites, Ronald Edward Allred Dec 1972

Elastic-Plastic Poisson's Ratio Of Borsic-Reinforced Aluminium Composites, Ronald Edward Allred

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

Poisson's ratio as a function of tensile strain has been examined for four volume fractions of unidirectional Borsic-reinforced aluminum composites. Linear relationships were found between Poisson's ratio and fiber volume fraction during Stage I (elastic filaments-elastic matrix) and Stage II (elastic filaments-plastic matrix) deformation which confirms that rule-of-mixtures equations may be used to predict Poisson's ratios for metal-matrix composites. These equations must be used with care, however, due to differences in the Poisson's ratio behavior of the components of the composite when tested alone and in situ in the composite. These differences are attributed to the triaxial stress field generated …

New Wave Science Fiction Considered As A Popular Religious Phenomenon: A Definition And An Example, John Rothfork Dec 1972

New Wave Science Fiction Considered As A Popular Religious Phenomenon: A Definition And An Example, John Rothfork

American Studies ETDs

In the latter part of the 1960's the status of science fiction in America changed. Suddenly it ceased to be characterized as an insignificant formula-fiction. Its new importance rested on the seldom stated fact that it served a parareligious function during a decade when the common man discovered the "death of God." This was also the decade of Gemini and Apollo which saw the fulfillment of President Kennedy's promise to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth. Thus science fact and fiction complemented each other to offer the common man a paradigm and ritual absorbing …

Alienation And Variations In Orientation To Counter Culture Values: An Empirical Study, Dennis C. Mcbride Dec 1972

Alienation And Variations In Orientation To Counter Culture Values: An Empirical Study, Dennis C. Mcbride

Sociology ETDs

Alienation and variations in orientation to counter culture values were investigated in a survey of University of New Mexico undergraduates. A cumulative-type attitude scale was developed to measure orientation toward counter culture values. Dean's Alienation Scale, which combines three subscales of normlessness, powerlessness and social isolation to form a total alienation scale score, was used as a measure of subjective feelings of alienation. Results of the first order multivariate analysis show a moderate positive relationship of student's counter culture orientation to a) alienation, with normlessness and powerlessness being the strongest components, and b) peer, as opposed to parent, social approval …

A System Of Environmental Analysis And User-Input Studies For Medical Facilities, Gary Thomas Nash

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The thesis first presents the concept of environmental analysis and user-input studies as it relates to architecture. Issues and problems that evolve from the concept are discussed. There is a need within the architectural profession to establish a system of analysis that will allow the architect to understand how people behave in and react to specific buildings or spaces he or someone else has designed. Understanding the behavioral implications within such spaces should be an important part of the architect's education and his professional knowledge. There exist however several basic problems when the issue of environmental analysis and user-input is …

Anxiety And Body Image In Tattooed And Nontattooed Military Prisoners, Terry L. Habeger Dec 1972

Anxiety And Body Image In Tattooed And Nontattooed Military Prisoners, Terry L. Habeger

Student Work

Tattooing has evolved into something less than an art, particularity in western cultures, and has lost its original dignity and original significance as well (Abramson,1931). As a result, there has been a great deal of conjecture concerning the psychodynaraics of tattooing (Edgerton & Dingman,1963; Hamburger,1966; Hamburger & Lacovara,1963). The present study was an attempt to investigate the psychodynamics of tattooing through the use of one measure of anxiety and two measures of body image with tattooed and nontattooed individuals. The techniques employed were the Secord (1953) Homonym Word Association Test, the Secord-Jourard (1953) Body Cathexis Scale, and the Taylor (1953) …

The Civil Rights Act Of 1875: A Failure Reconsidered, Barbara N. Luckett

Student Work

The years since the Civil War have witnessed vigorous efforts, not always successful, on the part of black and white Americans to elevate substantially the position of the black American in sociey. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the most dramatic and significant legislation, on a national level, which attacked segregation and discrimination, but it was not the first of its kind. The Civil Rights Act passed in 1964 contained many of the same provisions that had been enacted, or proposed but deleted, in a similar Civil Rights Act in 1875. On the whole, in its impact and enforcement, …

A Comparative Study Of Phenolics In Chestnut (Castanea), And Their Relationships With Resistance To Endothia Parasitica, Paul Edward Barnett Dec 1972

A Comparative Study Of Phenolics In Chestnut (Castanea), And Their Relationships With Resistance To Endothia Parasitica, Paul Edward Barnett

Doctoral Dissertations

American chestnut (Castanea dentata Borkh.) was a highly valued forest species in the Appalachian region prior to introduction of the chestnut blight fungus (Endothia parasitica (Murr.) A. & A.), which practically eliminated it. Since no control method has been devised and oriental species and hybrids are not generally satisfactory replacements, breeding resistant individuals through selection offers some hope of reestablishment. A chemical method for screening resis-tant individuals for retention in a breeding program would be of great benefit. Since phenolic compounds have been implicated in disease resistance of some cultivated crops and forest and fruit trees, this study is an …

An Investigation Of The Variables Affecting Steam Condensation On The Outside Of A Horizontal Tube Bundle, David Martin Eissenberg Dec 1972

An Investigation Of The Variables Affecting Steam Condensation On The Outside Of A Horizontal Tube Bundle, David Martin Eissenberg

Doctoral Dissertations

The accurate prediction of the thermal performance of large multitube steam condensers for application to the distillation desalination of seawater depends on the availability of correlations for calculating each of the film heat transfer coefficients for individual tubes located within the condenser as a function of local conditions. Although correlations are available, there have been few experimental verifications of their accuracy or even of their validity in the specific application to desalination, particularly with respect to the two film coefficients associated with the condensation process, the condensate film heat transfer coefficient and the non-condensable gas film heat transfer coefficient.

Jean Charles De Pradel In French Colonial Louisiana, 1714-1764, Patricia Dillon Woods

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Jean Charles de Pradel, a younger son of a provincial robe family of Limousin, France, resided in Louisiana for most of the period the colony was under French control. De Pradel's initial encounter with Louisiana was in 1714 when he was assigned to the colony on his first tour of duty in the military. At that time, Louisiana was struggling for its existence against the natural enemies of disease, famine and starvation as well as against the growing threats of conflict with the Spanish in near-by Pensacola and from the English to the north. This colony on the Mississippi offered …
