The Effect Of Hip Position And Emg Biofeedback Training On Selectively Increasing The Vastus Medialis Oblique In Relation To The Vastus Lateralis, Christina Diane Davlin Jan 1995

The Effect Of Hip Position And Emg Biofeedback Training On Selectively Increasing The Vastus Medialis Oblique In Relation To The Vastus Lateralis, Christina Diane Davlin

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) is a patellar tracking dysfunction usually associated with a muscular imbalance between the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) muscle and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle. The imbalance is most commonly attributed to a weak VMO resulting in a smaller VMO:VL ratio. Several electromyographic (EMG) studies have defined specific limb positions (such as external rotation of the hip) that preferentially activate the VMO. However, there has been no literature to show that preferential activation of the VMO successfully translates into increased VMO:VL ratios with training. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of hip rotation on …

Physiological Response Of Two Turfgrass Species To Increasing Drought And Salinity Stress Using A Line Source Gradient, Dorothy E Dean Jan 1995

Physiological Response Of Two Turfgrass Species To Increasing Drought And Salinity Stress Using A Line Source Gradient, Dorothy E Dean

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A line source gradient study was initiated to investigate the feasibility of using the saline aquifer, existing beneath the Las Vegas valley, as an alternative irrigation source for turfgrass. Results indicated that the aquifer could be used as a supplemental irrigation source, without any diminished turfgrass quality, if total water potentials {dollar}\rm(\Psi\sb{T}){dollar} were maintained above species specific thresholds, where {dollar}\rm\Psi\sb{T}{dollar} is defined as the sum of the matric {dollar}\rm(\Psi\sb{M}){dollar} and osmotic {dollar}\rm(\Psi\sb{\Pi}){dollar} potentials. The soil water potential components {dollar}\rm(\Psi\sb{M},\Psi\sb{\Pi}){dollar} were found to additively affect yield, evapotranspiration, turf color, percent cover, and turf temperature. Leaf xylem water potential, stomatal conductance, and …

Win The Lead! Television News Philosophy And The Life Cycle Of A Social Movement, Marie Curkan-Flanagan Jan 1995

Win The Lead! Television News Philosophy And The Life Cycle Of A Social Movement, Marie Curkan-Flanagan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate what effect the evolution of a social movement has on the depth of broadcast news coverage. By focusing on the American Indian take-over of Alcatraz Island 1969-71, this study examines whether a television news story has a life cycle of its own which contributes and/or detracts from the life cycle of a social movement. The Alcatraz occupation was selected because it was the first aggressive and prolonged act of Indian protest in the United States. The foundation for this thesis rests upon the idea that the "lead story" to a television newscast …

The Impact Of Nonpoint Source Pollution From Mining Wastes On Water Quality, Elko County, Nevada, Samuel Earman Jan 1995

The Impact Of Nonpoint Source Pollution From Mining Wastes On Water Quality, Elko County, Nevada, Samuel Earman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A study was performed at a mine site in Elko County, Nevada to determine the effects on water quality resulting from waste rock at the site. Statistically significant (alpha less than or equal to 0.05) increases of several constituents, including sulfate (272 mg/L), calcium (46 mg/L), and magnesium (39 mg/L), were found to occur in the North Fork of the Humboldt River as it flows through the mine site. Geochemical modeling and historical data suggested that waste rock from the mine is primarily responsible for the increase in dissolved solids concentration. Electrical conductivity of the water exhibits seasonal fluctuations, with …

Evaluation Of Ultrasound Method For Determining Aggregate Gradations In Asphaltic Concrete Mixes, Michael Robert Dunning Jan 1995

Evaluation Of Ultrasound Method For Determining Aggregate Gradations In Asphaltic Concrete Mixes, Michael Robert Dunning

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a geotechnical method, ultrasound, to detect aggregate gradation differences in asphaltic concrete pavements. Empirical data had previously been used to suggest that the more coarse the gradation, the less incidence's of rutting. It is my thesis that the more coarse the gradation, the higher the velocity of a sound wave through the asphalt concrete. This being the case, the velocity measure can be used in a design or field quality control procedure as a correlation to a performance test to choose a coarse gradation that has non-rutting field performance properties. Tests were …

Rap Music As Protest: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Public Enemy's Lyrics, Joseph Paul Eiswerth Jan 1995

Rap Music As Protest: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Public Enemy's Lyrics, Joseph Paul Eiswerth

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Rap music has been one of the most popular and controversial forms of entertainment in the 1990s. Rap music serves as a form of social protest used by Blacks who feel oppressed. This study defines rap music as protest rhetoric, provides a history of rap music as an extension of Black African and American oral traditions, and analyzes the lyrics of Public Enemy, one of the most powerful protest rap artists. Although Public Enemy's music does not function in a social movement as previous protest songs, a comparison of Public Enemy's lyrics to conclusions drawn by previous researchers will show …

Similarity Between Polygonal Shapes, Guorong Fang Jan 1995

Similarity Between Polygonal Shapes, Guorong Fang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis we review existing algorithms for measuring shape similarity between polygons. We present a new approach to measure similarity based on the notion of annular profile. We also present the implementation of three shape measuring algorithms: signature function, turning function, and annular profile. The implementation is done by using the Visual C++ programming language. Finally, we discuss the comparative performances of the above three methods for capturing shape similarity. Measurement of shape similarity has applications in pattern recognition and artificial intelligence.

Feedback Linearization Of Nonminimum Phase Systems And Control Of Aeroelastic Systems And Undersea Vehicles, Francis M Chockalingam Jan 1995

Feedback Linearization Of Nonminimum Phase Systems And Control Of Aeroelastic Systems And Undersea Vehicles, Francis M Chockalingam

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The thesis presents the design of feedback control systems for a class of nonminimum phase single input-single output nonlinear systems. The linearized system is assumed to have one unstable zero. Since asymptotic or exact tracking of output trajectory cannot be accomplished, an approximate output is derived by neglecting the unstable zero. Based on the inversion of the new input-output map, a feedback linearizing control is derived; These results are applied to control an aeroelastic system and a small undersea vehicle. For pitch angle control and plunge motion regulation, an inverse control system is designed for the aeroelastic system. Simulation results …

The primary objective of the research presented in the dissertation, Analysis of Saturation Flows at Single, Dual and Triple Left-Turn Lanes, is to gain a better understanding of the operational characteristics of single and multiple left-turn lanes as compared to adjacent through-lanes on the same intersection approach. The findings of this study are based on average saturation flow headways as observed between the 4th and 8th vehicles within a saturation queue discharge. These observations were made for left turn movements at signalized intersections with protected left-turn phases. The findings of this study are based on field measurements taken at 62 …

Interpretations Of The Meaning Of Care: Creating Caring Relationships In A Middle School Classroom, Nora Irene Alder Jan 1995

Interpretations Of The Meaning Of Care: Creating Caring Relationships In A Middle School Classroom, Nora Irene Alder

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this year long interpretive study was to examine the creation of caring relationships among and the meanings of care to middle school students and their teacher. Specifically, I asked what care means to middle school aged students and their teacher; how caring relationships are created by middle school students and their teacher; and what influences support a teacher's inclination to care?;Because caring relationships are interactive and subject to the interpretations of the people involved in those relationships, symbolic interactionism was the framework for the study. Qualitative methodology for data gathering and the constant comparative method of data …

A Study Of Bistable Behavior And Parameter Variation In Dark Molecular Clouds, Robert Lee Vaughn Jan 1995

A Study Of Bistable Behavior And Parameter Variation In Dark Molecular Clouds, Robert Lee Vaughn

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A study of Bistable Behavior and Parameter Variation in Dark Molecular Clouds investigates the phenomenon of bistability and its relation to phase transitions, derives an analytical model of fractional ionization and does a parameter study. Specifically, this investigation focuses on several different types of phenomena that are associated with the modeling of giant and dark molecular clouds. The chemical model of a molecular cloud consists of a set of stiff coupled differential equations. Each differential equation represents the rate of change of the abundance of a chemical species in the molecular Cloud Analytical approximations to the fractional ionization are presented; …

High-Resolution Spectroscopy Of Nitrogen(2)(+), Qiang Tu Jan 1995

High-Resolution Spectroscopy Of Nitrogen(2)(+), Qiang Tu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The visible {dollar}A\sp2\Pi\sb{u} \gets X\sp2\Sigma\sbsp{g}{+}{dollar} absorption spectrum of N{dollar}\sb2\sp+{dollar} was observed by using a coaxial ion beam laser beam technique for the first time. The resonances are detected by allowing the ion beam to collide with buffer gas and detecting the surviving ion beam current. Because the collisional cross-section depends on the internal state of the ion, the surviving ion beam current changes when the laser frequency is resonant with the ions. This technique can detect a fractional change in collisional cross section of only 0.03% from one quantum state to another. The fractional noise in ion current {dollar}\Delta I/I{dollar} …

Faculty's service to the college was next in importance to administrators, with other areas, such as community service or participation in professional …

"Surely, A Wench Can Choose Her Own Work!" Women Coal Miners In Paonia, Colorado, 1976-1987, Dona G Gearhart Jan 1995

"Surely, A Wench Can Choose Her Own Work!" Women Coal Miners In Paonia, Colorado, 1976-1987, Dona G Gearhart

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In 1842 the British Parliament passed the Mines and Collieries Act which excluded women from working in underground mines. The legislation created a gender based, industry-wide segmentation of labor that persisted in Great Britain and the United States for 130 years. Post-World War II social and legal changes created a context from which women reappropriated their choice to seek jobs as underground coal miners. Women's representation in the industry increased into the 1980s, peaking at between eight and eleven percent of the workforce, but by 1983 their numbers began to substantially deCline After the coal boom of the 1970s ended, …

The primary sources of data were transcripts of tutoring sessions; interviews with the students and family members; notes from informal conversations with the students; and writing of the students and family. Grounded in theories of social constructivism, literacy acquisition, and family systems, this study attempted to add to the body of research on adult literacy learning; The two adult students who participated for the full six months presented a contrast. One was a 46-year-old black man, a complete non-reader, …

A Framework For Modeling Risk And Emergency Response In Hazardous Materials Transportation, Emelinda Maano Parentela Jan 1995

A Framework For Modeling Risk And Emergency Response In Hazardous Materials Transportation, Emelinda Maano Parentela

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Hazardous materials transport is a significant economic activity. Routing is one of the key issues in hazardous materials transport. Cost and risk are primary factors influencing routing. Emergency preparedness is an issue that is common to all of these. Traditionally, risks and emergency preparedness have been addressed as two interdependent issues, but the interactions between them have not been addressed explicitly. This often results in risk estimates that ignore the effect of emergency preparedness; This research presents a framework for quantifying effects of emergency preparedness on risk of hazardous materials transportation. Risk estimates are typically based on the probability of …

Differential Oppression, Alienation And Edgework: Keys To Understanding Juvenile Delinquency, William John Miller Jan 1995

Differential Oppression, Alienation And Edgework: Keys To Understanding Juvenile Delinquency, William John Miller

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study tests several tenets of the theory of differential oppression. The theory of differential oppression suggests that the social order is created by adults for adults. Children are forced to conform to this order, despite their possible reluctance, because they lack the power to create meaningful social change. The extended use of power by adults leads to the oppression of children. The theory of differential oppression maintains that delinquency is one possible reaction to oppression; This study also attempts to expand the theory of differential oppression by addressing the role of alienation in the development of delinquency. It suggests …

Analysis Of The Genus Larrea: Molecular Systematics And Polyploidy, Kimberly Lynn Hunter Jan 1995

Analysis Of The Genus Larrea: Molecular Systematics And Polyploidy, Kimberly Lynn Hunter

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The evolutionary and biogeographic history of the genus Larrea was assessed by determining patterns of genetic variation in chloroplast DNA, nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS1) DNA, and temporal and spatial distributions of the three geographically distinct polyploids of Larrea tridentata. The phylogenetic relationships, based on the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) restriction site analysis, were congruent with morphological studies. Cytoplasmic gene flow was postulated to account for identical haplotypes being shared between L. nitida and L. cuneifolia from South America, with L. nitida as the putative maternal donor. Two distinct cpDNA haplotypes were found in North American L. tridentata, and one …

Promoting The Nation: The Rise Of Ethno-Nationalism And Early Modern Drama, David Elwood Phillips

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Most political scientists locate the rise of ethno-nationalism in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. English ethno-nationalism is developed throughout that period through a xenophobic identification of racial, religious, and national others. This study examines how Thomas Kyd, Christopher Marlowe, Willian Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, and Thomas Middleton promote English ethno-nationalism through the use of stereotypes, especially the collection of stereotypes known as the Black Legend of Spain. Chapter one outlines the theory and psychology of ethno-nationalism, laying the foundation for subsequent chapters devoted to specific plays, including Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy, Marlowe's The Jew of the Malta, Shakespeare's The …

The Use Of Temporal Constructs As A Model For Understanding Perceptions Of Environmental Hazard, Victoria Koehler-Jones Jan 1995

The Use Of Temporal Constructs As A Model For Understanding Perceptions Of Environmental Hazard, Victoria Koehler-Jones

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

An extreme physical event, such as a flood, becomes a hazard when social structures and systems are endangered by it--and it becomes a disaster when these structures and systems are actually disrupted. As the twenty-first century approaches and population pressures continue to grow, natural disasters will occur with greater frequency, bringing serious consequences for more people than ever before. The problem of minimizing damage is aggravated by inadequate recognition of hazard in time to mitigate or prevent disaster; This thesis develops a framework for understanding how perceptions of natural hazard are associated with ideas about the passage of time and …
