A Gradient Analysis Of Coleogyne Communities In Southern Nevada, Simon Adams Lei Jan 1995

A Gradient Analysis Of Coleogyne Communities In Southern Nevada, Simon Adams Lei

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Species richness, density, and abundance in Coleogyne ramosissima (blackbrush) shrublands were compared on 15 elevational transects in the Spring and Sheep Mountain Ranges adjacent to the Las Vegas Valley. Coleogyne shrublands shared relatively broad upper and lower ecotones with Pinus-Juniperus and Larrea-Ambrosia vegetation, respectively. Lower Coleogyne ecotones generally had the highest species richness, and Pinus-Juniperus woodlands had the lowest species richness; Detrended correspondence analysis (DECORANA) suggested that elevation and soil depth were significantly associated with the distribution of stand and species groups identified from two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) in the Spring and Sheep Mountain Ranges. Precipitation and soil moisture …

A Garden In The Desert? A Regional Study Of Ranching And Farming In Southern Nevada, 1870-1930, Sherryl Lynn Weber Jan 1995

A Garden In The Desert? A Regional Study Of Ranching And Farming In Southern Nevada, 1870-1930, Sherryl Lynn Weber

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the years between 1870 and 1930 Southern Nevada ranchers were actively engaged in reclaiming the land for agriculture. The availability of cheap land, artesian water, railroad transportation, nearby markets, along with enthusiastic support from town boosters facilitated their determined efforts to develop agriculture as a viable economic activity. Ranching and farming played an important role in Southern Nevada's early development and contributed in a significant way to its economic growth. Moreover, it reflects a noteworthy and integral part of the area's history.

Breakdown In The Broker State: The Cio In Southern Nevada During World War Ii, Richard W Mingus

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During World War II, the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) and the American Federation of Labor (AFL) fought a bitter jurisdictional dispute at Basic Magnesium, Incorporated (BMI), a defense plant in southern Nevada. While the CIO concentrated on organizing African-American workers, the AFL colluded with plant managers and conservative politicians, including Senator Patrick A. McCarran, in an effort to destroy the industrial union. Following the CIO's victory in a representation election sponsored by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), the AFL and its allies used the newly-enacted Frey Amendment, a piece of legislation which sharply limited the Board's authority to …

The Mobility Of Radiocesium And Plutonium In Roach Lake In Southern Nevada, Mohammadtagi Nassehzadeh-Tabriz Jan 1995

The Mobility Of Radiocesium And Plutonium In Roach Lake In Southern Nevada, Mohammadtagi Nassehzadeh-Tabriz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The concentrations of several natural and artificial radionuclides were determined in the sediment from a dry lake in southern Nevada. Five sites (designated I through V) were selected in a dry lake called Roach Lake located in Ivanpah Valley about 41 miles west of Las Vegas, Nevada. The samples were analyzed for Cs-137 and other gamma emitting radionuclides using high purity germanium detectors. the plutonium analysis was performed, after chemical separation, by the detection of its alpha particle emissions with surface barrier detectors. Strontium-90 was determined at only one site, after extraction from the samples, by measuring its daughter yttrium-90 …

Honor And The Southern Lady: The Persitence Of Antebellum Ideology Among Elite Southern Women, 1820-1877, Joan Meyer Jan 1995

Honor And The Southern Lady: The Persitence Of Antebellum Ideology Among Elite Southern Women, 1820-1877, Joan Meyer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Honor and the Southern Lady: The Persistence of Antebellum Ideology Among Elite Southern Women, 1820-1877 investigates whether the war permanently changed elite white women's legal, economic and social status, gender relations and race relations. Southern honor and slavery were the social and economic basis of the hierarchical order of antebellum Southern life affecting women's lives and worldview. The war forced elite women to assume a greater responsibility which resulted in a more independent self-image and in more difficult race relations. Southern life changed because of post-war economic deprivation and emancipation, but Southern culture, including its hierarchy, remained. Elite women's preceptions …

Life History, Diversity And Patterns Of Bat Community Structure In The Spring Mountains Of Southern Nevada, Marikay Allene Ramsey Jan 1995

Life History, Diversity And Patterns Of Bat Community Structure In The Spring Mountains Of Southern Nevada, Marikay Allene Ramsey

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the bat community of the Spring Mountains of southern Nevada from June 1992 through September 1994. Distributions, life history and general ecological attributes of fourteen species of bats were summarized. Thirteen species were present in low to mid elevations, ten species in mid to high elevations, and three species at all elevations. Bats were most abundant in mid summer. Few differences were found among species in time of activity. The ranges of temperatures in which bats were active generally reflected their habitat use. Maximum and minimum temperatures, and weather were the abiotic factors best predicting bat activity; …
