Experimental Determination Of Pressures And Velocities In Plant Xylem, Anand Kanjerla Jan 1995

Experimental Determination Of Pressures And Velocities In Plant Xylem, Anand Kanjerla

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study reports on the experimental modeling of fluid flow in plant xylem. Three experiments were conducted to determine pressures and velocities in the conducting vessels of the xylem portion of a plant using corn syrup as the working fluid and Plexiglas tubing as the test section. The first experiment was performed using a straight duct to model the flow in a xylem vessel without any obstructions. The second experiment was performed using a 5-pore perforation plate as an obstruction in a straight duct. This perforation plate was kept at an angle of 23 degrees relative to the vessel axis …

Determination Of Soluble Mineral Content In Las Vegas Soils, Mark Alan Leonard Jan 1995

Determination Of Soluble Mineral Content In Las Vegas Soils, Mark Alan Leonard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Lower basin areas in the Las Vegas Valley contain soils with large amounts of soluble minerals. Dissolving and leaching processes due to water intrusion into foundation soils containing soluble minerals can cause a volume reduction of the soil which in turn causes structural stress. Soil improvement recommendations for soluble soils are based upon the amount of soluble minerals of a parent soil. This study reports the results of research to develop a correlation between the electrical conductivity and the concentration of soluble minerals in aqueous soil extracts. Correlations were developed by measuring the total dissolved solids and conductance of aqueous …

Determination Of Formaldehyde By Ion Exclusion And Ion Exchange Separation With Amperometric Detection, Yilin Shi Jan 1995

Determination Of Formaldehyde By Ion Exclusion And Ion Exchange Separation With Amperometric Detection, Yilin Shi

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A method has been developed for determination of formaldehyde in air sample extracts by ion exclusion and ion exchange separation followed by amperometric detection. Optimum eluant compositions and separation columns for the best separation have been determined, as well as the optimum working electrode, electrolytes, and applied potentials for the best detection. An internal standardization was used to correct for detector drift. An interference study was performed for organic acids, other aldehydes, and alcohols. Using impingers containing aqueous bisulfite solution for collection, a side by side comparison study with the 2,4-DNPH method (also using impingers) was conducted. The detection limit …

Determination Of Indoor Air Quality At The Unlv Campus, Latika Datta Jan 1995

Determination Of Indoor Air Quality At The Unlv Campus, Latika Datta

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Research on air pollution has gained particular momentum over the past decade. The presence of volatile hydrocarbons, and aldehydes in indoor environments has raised concern about the safety and well-being of personnel exposed to environments containing these pollutants. Because of potential sources of hydrocarbons and formaldehyde, the anatomy lab in the Biology building and the working areas of the Reprographics building on the UNLV campus were singled out for study. Air samples were collected from the Reprographics building for hydrocarbon analysis. A charcoal sorbent tube attached to a commercially available sampler was used for sample collection. Analyses were performed with …
