Palladium-Catalyzed Vinylic Substitution Of Aryl Halides On Polymeric Nitrogen Supports., Chia-Hsing Sun Jan 1986

Palladium-Catalyzed Vinylic Substitution Of Aryl Halides On Polymeric Nitrogen Supports., Chia-Hsing Sun

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The structure of typical palladium complexes used as catalysts in organic synthesis is reviewed; particular attention is paid to the systematic study of palladium catalyzed vinylic substitution on a variety of aryl iodides and bromides (Heck-type vinylation). The general conditions of this process, i.e., a homogeneous catalyst operating at moderate temperature, which requires a proton acceptor to complete the catalyst cycle, are conducive to successful development of a polymer-bound catalyst. Using 4-picoline as a ligand under homogeneous Heck-type vinylation conditions. Morpholine is an adequate base to stabilize the catalytic picoline complex when aryl iodides are condensed with styrene. However, sodium …

Molecular Studies Of T-Lymphocytes From Bovine Leukemia Virus-Infected Cattle., Diana Lynn Williams Jan 1986

Molecular Studies Of T-Lymphocytes From Bovine Leukemia Virus-Infected Cattle., Diana Lynn Williams

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Highly specific monoclonal antibodies and microfluorimetry were used to determine the absolute number of B and T lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infected cattle. The peripheral blood lymphocyte populations from BLV-infected cattle were elevated when compared to BLV-negative animals. The increase in the lymphocyte population in the aleukemic (AL) animals was due to an increase in T lymphocytes. In the PL animals the increase was due mainly to an increase of B lymphocytes but also to an increase of T lymphocytes. The PL animals showed a significantly higher number of surface immunoglobulin positive cells (sIg('+)) …

Development Of A New Conductivity Model For Shaly Sand Interpretation., Pedro L. Silva Jan 1986

Development Of A New Conductivity Model For Shaly Sand Interpretation., Pedro L. Silva

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this dissertation, a new theoretical conductivity model for shaly sands is developed. The model is based on dual water concepts. In addition, the equivalent counterion conductivity changes as the diffuse electrical double layer expands and is then a function of temperature, shaliness, and of the conductivity of the far water. The formation resistivity factor used in the model is independent of shaliness. A method to calculate the equivalent counterion conductivity is proposed. This method is based on treating the double layer region as a hypothetical electrolyte, the properties of which are derived from basic electrochemistry theory. The new model …

A Dynamics And Sedimentology Study Of Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana (Cluster Analysis, Estuarine)., Chaoyu Wu Jan 1986

A Dynamics And Sedimentology Study Of Eastern Atchafalaya Bay, Louisiana (Cluster Analysis, Estuarine)., Chaoyu Wu

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A new Mississippi River Delta is building in Atchafalaya Bay of southcentral Louisiana as a result of a upstream natural diversion in river course. The present study focuses on several distinct but complementary aspects of the physical processes of the modern Atchafalaya River Delta. Coherence analysis reveals that the subtidal fluctuations of water stage and current velocity in the estuarine area are closely related to atmospheric forcing at different time scales. The water stage fluctuations at Morgan City had significant variance at time scale 2.5-10 days which was driven by local longitudinal (north-south) winds. There were also fluctuations at periods …

An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of Diverter System Performance., Frederick Eugene Beck Jan 1986

An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of Diverter System Performance., Frederick Eugene Beck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Diverter systems, used as an alternate means of well control while drilling surface hole, have a demonstrated history of failure. Of particular interest in this dissertation are failures related to excessive backpressure, such as mechanical failure of surface equipment or the loss of the rig due to foundation collapse. Critical flow effects, neglected by current design practices, are shown both experimentally and theoretically to have a significant effect on backpressure. Critical flow is modeled by quantifying exit pressures and by including fluid acceleration pressure losses in backpressure calculations. "Systems analysis" of diverter operations is developed and applied to a field …

Fate And Transport Of Low-Ph Hazardous Materials After Deep Well Disposal., Winton G. Aubert Jan 1986

Fate And Transport Of Low-Ph Hazardous Materials After Deep Well Disposal., Winton G. Aubert

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ultimate fate and chemical kinetics of low-pH hazardous wastes after deep well injection were studied. Two experimental approaches were taken. Chemical kinetics of reactions involving acids and typical formation clays was studied using a batch reaction scheme. The effects of reactions involving flowing acidic waste streams and disposal formations were characterized using sand packs of length one foot, four feet, and twenty feet. A numerical ground water flow simulator was used to model the interactions of flowing acidic wastes with linear sand packs and with a hypothetical waste disposal system. Reaction rate coefficients and activation energies were determined for …

The Effects Of Structural Model Misspecification And Sample Size On The Robustness Of Lisrel Maximum Likelihood Parameter Estimates (Monte Carlo)., Beatrice Ott Baldwin Jan 1986

The Effects Of Structural Model Misspecification And Sample Size On The Robustness Of Lisrel Maximum Likelihood Parameter Estimates (Monte Carlo)., Beatrice Ott Baldwin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Researchers using the LISREL (linear structural relations) program developed by Joreskog and Sorbom (1984) for the purpose of estimating parameters of structural equation models must make important assumptions. The researcher must assume large sample size (asymptotic theory) and a multivariate normal distribution for the indicator variables. In addition, theoretical assumptions as to the appropriateness of the model specification must also be made. The Monte Carlo study examines the robustness of maximum likelihood parameter estimates under varying degrees of model misspecification. The effects of errors of omission, errors of inclusion, and simultaneous errors of omission and inclusion are studied for sample …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The lifetimes and quantum yields of proanthocyanidins, monomers and dimers of catechin and epicatechin, were measured. The fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime of the monomers was three times greater in dioxane than in water. The fluorescence decay curves of catechin and epicatechin were found to be fit best by a monoexponential function. The fluorescence decay of dimers of epicatechin and catechin were best fit to a sum of two exponentials. The fluorescence decay curve of a bridged dimer, Procyaninidin A-2, in dioxane was best fit to a monoexponential function. The 400 MHz proton NMR spectra of Procyanidin B-1 decaacetate in …

Studies On The Molecular Cloning Of "Aryletherase" From A Ligninolytic Erwinia Sp.: Enhancement Of Gene Expression., Jeffrey William Cary Jan 1986

Studies On The Molecular Cloning Of "Aryletherase" From A Ligninolytic Erwinia Sp.: Enhancement Of Gene Expression., Jeffrey William Cary

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Recombinant DNA techniques were used to enhance the expression of a gene encoding "aryletherase" activity. This gene, apparently lacking regulatory elements, was present on a 792bp BamHI DNA fragment of Erwinia sp. genomic DNA, that was cloned into Escherichia coli using the plasmid vector pBR322. To obtain a larger fragment of Erwinia genomic DNA carrying the "aryletherase" gene and its regulatory regions, an Erwinia sp. genomic DNA library was constructed in the lambda phage EMBL3. Screening the library with nick translated 792bp BamHI fragment identified several recombinant phage which demonstrated homology with the probe. Restriction digestion of DNA from one …

The Topological Information Retrieval System And The Topological Paradigm: A Unification Of The Major Models Of Information Retrieval., Steven C. Cater Jan 1986

The Topological Information Retrieval System And The Topological Paradigm: A Unification Of The Major Models Of Information Retrieval., Steven C. Cater

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

There are three topics discussed in this work. The first topic is an investigation of the topological properties of the p-norm model of Salton, Fox, and Wu. It is shown that certain properties of the p-norm model that one would expect to hold, given the topological origin of the model, do not in fact hold. These properties include the ability to change the query by changing p, and the ability to adequately separate documents. Since these properties do hold in the model as actually constructed, it must be that the properties do not follow from the topological origin of the …

Mud Deposition At The Shoreface: Wave And Sediment Dynamics On The Chenier Plain Of Louisiana., George Paul Kemp Jan 1986

Mud Deposition At The Shoreface: Wave And Sediment Dynamics On The Chenier Plain Of Louisiana., George Paul Kemp

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sedimentological data, and high-resolution current velocity time-series were acquired nearshore along the muddy coast of Louisiana's chenier plain. Results suggest that the 2 to 10 cm thick, laminated and graded silt/shell + mud beds which characterize shoreface mudflat sedimentation form through intermittent dumping of fluid mud suspensions. Cohesive and non-cohesive sediments are first separated and concentrated by shear within a wave boundary layer (WBL). Rapid sedimentation, or "freezing", of the mud fraction occurs when the yield strength of the fluid mud suspension equals that of the WBL shear stress. Incident waves were well described by shallow water linear wave theory, …

The Algebraic Image Of The Asymmetric Top., Yorck Leschber Jan 1986

The Algebraic Image Of The Asymmetric Top., Yorck Leschber

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The algebraic realization of the quantum mechanical rotor by the SU(3) (--->) SO(3) algebra is investigated. It is shown that a hamiltonian built from rotationally invariant functions of SU(3) generators reproduces the eigenvalues of the rotor hamiltonian. The equivalence of both models is established also for the quadrupole transition rates and the D(,2) symmetry of the rotor. The relation between the SU(3) (--->) SO(3) algebra and the nuclear shell model allows therefore a microscopic interpretation of rotational motion as a many-particle effect.

Populations, Selection Mechanisms, And Performance: A Study Of Banks In The State Of Louisiana., Merle John Peper Jan 1986

Populations, Selection Mechanisms, And Performance: A Study Of Banks In The State Of Louisiana., Merle John Peper

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Many theoretical paradigms have been created in an effort to successfully measure organizational performance. One of the more recent approaches, known as the "population perspective," focuses on populations of organizations as its unit of analysis, and attempts to explain the relationships among organizations, populations, and environments. These relationships are explored by (a) grouping organizations into homogeneous clusters or populations, and (b) assessing alternative selection mechanisms or predictors of organizational prosperity. The studying of populations help define the organizational forms allowing survival within an environment, while increasing the generalizability of the study's findings. Studying selection mechanisms within their populations allows the …

An Empirical Investigation Of The Comparability Of Reported Earnings Per Share Under Accounting Principles Board Opinion No. 15., Suzanne Resi Pinac-Ward Jan 1986

An Empirical Investigation Of The Comparability Of Reported Earnings Per Share Under Accounting Principles Board Opinion No. 15., Suzanne Resi Pinac-Ward

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Earnings per share (EPS) is considered by many to be one of the most important summary indicators presented in the financial statements. Many financial statement users rely on EPS as the most important single measure of corporate performance. Previous empirical evidence suggests that a strong link exists between EPS changes and stock price changes. The objective of this study was to determine if the provisions of APB 15 provide for consistent reporting of comparable EPS figures across preparers of financial statements. The application of alternative interpretations of provisions of APB 15 has the potential to produce materially different EPS figures. …

On The Martingale Problem For Infinite Dimensional Stochastic Differential Equations., Robert W. Riordan Jan 1986

On The Martingale Problem For Infinite Dimensional Stochastic Differential Equations., Robert W. Riordan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this dissertation is to establish, in a certain infinite dimensional setting, some existence and uniqueness results pertaining to the type of exponential martingale problem previously considered by Strook and Varadhan in the finite dimensional setting. The setting is among those considered by K. Ito in his work on stochastic differential equations in infinite dimensional spaces. Briefly, the martingale problem takes the following form: to show the existence and uniqueness of a measure m on the space S of continuous functions defined on the nonnegative real lien with values in some state space, having the property that exp(f(t,w)) …
