Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness: Creatine Kinase As A Marker For Tissue Damage (Pgf(2a) Metabolite)., John Douglas Boatwright Jan 1986

Delayed Onset Of Muscle Soreness: Creatine Kinase As A Marker For Tissue Damage (Pgf(2a) Metabolite)., John Douglas Boatwright

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Twenty college age males participated in a weight-lifting experiment, 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 70% 1RM for the squat, to examine the time courses between creatine phosphokinase (CPK), prostaglandin F(,2) alpha metabolite (PGF(,2a) met) and ratings of perceived soreness (RPS). Both groups, aspirin (n = 10) and placebo (n = 10), received medication (3g/day) for four consecutive days, starting 1 day prior to workout. Ratings of soreness and blood samples were taken pre- and immediately post-exercise, and at 24 h intervals for 3 days after exercise. There was no significant difference (p < 0.05) between the groups for CPK and RPS across time, but the prostaglandins were significantly different (p < 0.01) at all time intervals between groups. Changes seen across time were quadratic for all variables. The 24 h prostaglandin level was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the pre-, post-exercise and 72 h levels, but not significantly different from the 48 h level. Ratings of soreness were not significantly different (p < 0.05) at the 24 and 48 h intervals, but both were significantly higher than at all other time intervals. The mean CPK levels at 24 and 48 h were not significantly different (p < 0.05), but the 24 h CPK level was significantly higher (p < 0.05) from the other time intervals. There was a significant correlation (p < 0.01) between the time courses of CPK and RPS. It was concluded that CPK can be used as a marker for tissue damage and that prostaglandins did not influence the subjects' perception of muscle soreness or the release or uptake of CPK.

Spectroscopy And Photochromism Of Triphenylformazan And Its Derivatives., Claudina Veas-Arancibia Jan 1986

Spectroscopy And Photochromism Of Triphenylformazan And Its Derivatives., Claudina Veas-Arancibia

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The spectroscopic and photochromic characteristics of triphenylformazan and its derivatives were investigated. These derivatives were formed by adding substituents to the phenyl group attached to the carbon atom of the formazan ring or by replacing this phenyl group with a naphthyl group. Studies of the effect of the concentration, substituent, solvent and temperature on the absorption spectra of triphenylformazan were made. Molecular mechanics calculations were performed to generate two different geometries of triphenylformazan that were used in CNDO calculations to assign the electronic transitions observed in the absorption spectra. In contradiction to what was stated in earlier investigations, the results …

The Role Of Task Manipulations On The Invariant Phasing Characteristics Of A Generalized Motor Program (Relative Timing)., Carol Ann Wood Jan 1986

The Role Of Task Manipulations On The Invariant Phasing Characteristics Of A Generalized Motor Program (Relative Timing)., Carol Ann Wood

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Four experiments are reported that investigate the role of relative timing as an invariant characteristic of the generalized motor program. Based upon the concept of a generalized motor program, relative time as an invariant characteristic, should remain constant when variant features of a movement are manipulated. In the present series of experiments, a practice and transfer paradigm was used to investigate the influence of required parameter modifications on the relative timing characteristics during the transfer performance of a practiced three-component movement response. Following 150 training trials (100 trials on Day 1 and 50 trials on Day 2), subjects (n = …

Laser Optogalvanic And Photoacoustic Studies Of Some Atoms And Small Molecules., Phillip Lamar Clancy Jan 1986

Laser Optogalvanic And Photoacoustic Studies Of Some Atoms And Small Molecules., Phillip Lamar Clancy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

A device designed to perform laser optogalvanic (LOG) measurements on low pressure gases in an electrical discharge has been constructed. The device employs the unique combination of pulsed laser radiation in the visible range, and transverse excitation of a radiofrequency (RF) discharge to obtain high quality spectroscopic data on highly excited atomic and molecular species existing in an electrical discharge. The results of LOG studies on xenon, cesium, and nitrogen are reported. In addition to functioning as a sensitive LOG detector, it has been discovered that the RFLOG device serves admirably as a contractless transducer of the photoacoustic signal. When …

Skill And Knowledge Base Attributes Of Young Baseball Players., Charlotte Anne Humphries Jan 1986

Skill And Knowledge Base Attributes Of Young Baseball Players., Charlotte Anne Humphries

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Members of three baseball teams for 13-to-14-year-olds and four teams for 10-to-12-year olds participated in a season-long study of their skills, knowledge base, and game performance. Subjects were weighed, height measured, skill tested at base running speed and throwing for distance and accuracy, game performance coded (position, control of ball, correctness of decision as to play to make, and proper execution of that play), and took a multiple-choice baseball test. Coaches supplied batting averages, and ranked their players into three levels (best, medium, and poorest players). As the lowest ranked players generally got little playing time (the league had no …

Development Of Automatic And Effortful Processes In Memory Of Movement Location., Aharon Dayan Jan 1986

Development Of Automatic And Effortful Processes In Memory Of Movement Location., Aharon Dayan

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two experiments designed to assess whether location information about movement is automatically encoded in memory were conducted. In Experiment 1, two automaticity criteria were examined. The first stipulated that age differences are not exhibited in processing location information; and, the second stipulated that location information is encoded without intention and additional intention does not improve the quality of the encoding process. A third criteria was also examined: whether spatial cues from the environment (layout of testing area) improves the encoding of movement information. In Experiment 2, the automaticity criteria that practice has no effect was analyzed. In Experiment 1, 60 …

Photophysics And Photochemical Studies Of Polypyridine Ruthenium (Ii) Complexes., Mario Alberto Ollino Jan 1986

Photophysics And Photochemical Studies Of Polypyridine Ruthenium (Ii) Complexes., Mario Alberto Ollino

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Stern-Volmer plots for the quenching of luminescence and for the photosubstitution reaction of tris-bipyridylruthenium(II) at 298 K were obtained. The two Stern-Volmer plots were found to be similar; this result is different from that of a previous report, but it agrees well with a general model postulated to represent the photophysical processes of the excited states of polypyridine ruthenium(II) complexes. The temperature dependence of the emission intensities and of the lifetimes of tris-bipyridylruthenium(II), cis-ibspyridyl bis-2,2'bipyridylruthenium(II), and 4,5-diazafluorenyl-bis-2,2'bipyridylruthenium(II) were reinvestigated in order to evaluate the difference in energy between the triplet metal to ligand charge transfer and ligand field excited states. …

The Contextual Interference Effect In Learning An Open Motor Skill (Random Practice, Blocked Practice)., Sinah Louise Goode Jan 1986

The Contextual Interference Effect In Learning An Open Motor Skill (Random Practice, Blocked Practice)., Sinah Louise Goode

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this series of experiments was to assess contextual interference effects for novices learning an open skill. Previous research has found that a random practice schedule as opposed to a blocked or repetitious schedule of practice facilitates retention and transfer in the learning of motor skills. The task required female subjects to throw a ball at a target to coincide the arrival of a trackway of light with the arrival of the ball. All subjects were inexperienced in throwing and open sport skills. Experiment 1 was designed to test contextual interference results on novices learning an open skill …
