Corporate Ownership, Dividend Policy, And Capital Structure Under Asymmetric Information., Upinder Singh Dhillon Jan 1986

Corporate Ownership, Dividend Policy, And Capital Structure Under Asymmetric Information., Upinder Singh Dhillon

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the role of insider ownership in the dividend policy and the leverage decision of the firm. An asymmetric information model is developed with the proportion of equity owned by insiders, dividend payout, and debt as signals of firm value. Analysis of the model yields testable hypotheses that insider ownership is negatively related to the payout and debt ratio of a firm. Cross-sectional regression analysis of leverage and payout ratio of the insider ownership is performed to test for the hypotheses. The hypothesis that firms with large insider holdings have lower leverage than firms with small insider holdings …

Qualitative And Quantitative Effects Of Temperature On The Growth And Development Of Three Cultivars Of Lilium Longiflorum, Thunb. (Heat-Units, Degree-Days, Degree-Hours)., Lester Aubrey Estes Jr Jan 1986

Qualitative And Quantitative Effects Of Temperature On The Growth And Development Of Three Cultivars Of Lilium Longiflorum, Thunb. (Heat-Units, Degree-Days, Degree-Hours)., Lester Aubrey Estes Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Three cultivars of Lilium longiflorum, Thunb., 'Ace', 'Nellie White' and 'Harson' were forced for the spring of 1983 and 1984 in greenhouse sections with minimum temperatures of 10, 14.5 or 18.9(DEGREES)C until 5 weeks after emergence (phase 1). Plants from each temperature treatment were then divided equally among the 3 temperature regimes (phase 2) to give 9 temperature histories. The design was based on results from a preliminary experiment in 1982. Fewer flowers, fewer leaves and shorter terminal height were associated with higher minimum temperatures. Flower and leaf number were most affected by early (phase 1) temperature treatment. 'Ace' produced …

The Effects Of Curriculum Tracking On Women's Occupational Outcomes: A Test Of The Correspondence Principle., Leroy Allen Furr Jan 1986

The Effects Of Curriculum Tracking On Women's Occupational Outcomes: A Test Of The Correspondence Principle., Leroy Allen Furr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In recent years, Marxist theories have challenged the traditional, meritocratic perspective dominant in the sociology of education. The meritocracy assumes that schools, like the larger society, are based on the premise of equal opportunity; success in school is the result of hard work and good grades, which lead to good jobs and good incomes. Bowles and Gintis, among other revisionists, disagree arguing that the structure of education, sorting students into segregated, hierarchical curriculum tracks, mirrors the structure of the capitalist workplace and reproduces the existing class system such that the most advantaged persons and groups continue to fare well while …

The Contextual Interference Effect In Learning An Open Motor Skill (Random Practice, Blocked Practice)., Sinah Louise Goode

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this series of experiments was to assess contextual interference effects for novices learning an open skill. Previous research has found that a random practice schedule as opposed to a blocked or repetitious schedule of practice facilitates retention and transfer in the learning of motor skills. The task required female subjects to throw a ball at a target to coincide the arrival of a trackway of light with the arrival of the ball. All subjects were inexperienced in throwing and open sport skills. Experiment 1 was designed to test contextual interference results on novices learning an open skill …

Effect Of Experimental Ostertagia Ostertagi Infection Or Chronic Pentagastrin Treatment On Abomasal Pathophysiology And Morphology Of Goats., Judit Eva Markovits

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

European-type mixed-breed goat kids were infected with Ostertagia ostertagi or were given chronic pentagastrin treatment. Selected clinicopathological parameters and fecal egg counts were monitored throughout the study. At necropsy the abomasal physical parameters were recorded and tissue samples were saved for parasite recovery, quantitative and qualitative light microscopy and transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Serum pepsinogen and gastrin immunoreactivity increased in parasitized animals. The increase was associated with the tissue phase of the parasitic development. Pentagastrin did not alter pepsinogen or gastrin immunoreactivity. All 8 infected animals had patent infection, and approximately 5% establishment of the infective dose of 15,000 …

Synthesis Of Poly(Vinylcatechols)., Saad Moulay Jan 1986

Synthesis Of Poly(Vinylcatechols)., Saad Moulay

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

5-Vinyl-1,3-benzodioxole, 28, 3,4-dimethoxystyrene, 29, 2,3-dimethoxystyrene, 30, 6-vinyl-1,4-benzodioxane, 31, and 4-vinyl-1,3-benzodioxole, 32 were synthesized and evaluated as poly(vinylcatechol) precursors. Four methods for preparing these monomers were explored. Dehydration of (alpha)-phenethyl alcohols was the best general procedure. Molecular weights as high as 95,000 in the case of poly(2,3-dimethoxystyrene) were achieved in the presence of free radical initiators. The kinetics of free radical polymerization of 2,3-dimethoxystyrene, 30, was studied dilatometrically and the overall rate of the reaction was found to be R(,p) + 2.53 x 10('-2) mol/L min. Radical copolymerizations of monomers 30 and 31 with styrene and methyl methacrylate were examined. The …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Experiments conducted in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, fields in 1983 and 1984 demonstrated that damage by both adults and nymphs of the second generation of the threecornered alfalfa hopper, Spissistilus festinus (Say), on soybean (third generation of the year) contribute to yield reduction. Results indicated nymphs were responsible for 45-60% of the total yield reduction. The vertical beat sheet, ground cloth, and beat net techniques for sampling S. festinus nymphs were evaluated in soybean fields utilizing systematic and random sampling. Based on the proportion of the population sampled, the relative variation, and regression on subsequent adult counts, the best …

The Effect Of Temperature And Humidity Stress On Plasma Progesterone, Luteinizing Hormone And Cortisol Profiles Following Cloprostenol Injection In Cycling Holstein Cows In A Controlled Environment (Environmental Physiology, Reproduction, Prostaglandins)., Anandarajah Sri Kanda Kumar Jan 1986

The Effect Of Temperature And Humidity Stress On Plasma Progesterone, Luteinizing Hormone And Cortisol Profiles Following Cloprostenol Injection In Cycling Holstein Cows In A Controlled Environment (Environmental Physiology, Reproduction, Prostaglandins)., Anandarajah Sri Kanda Kumar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The effect of heat stress on plasma profiles of progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and cortisol was evaluated following cloprostenol (500 (mu)g) induced luteolysis in lactating and non-lactating cows in a controlled environment. Another experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of heat stress on the superovulatory response in lactating cows. The plasma progesterone, LH and total estrogen concentrations were not altered by heat stress (P > 0.05) when the average rectal temperatures of both lactating and non-lactating cows were raised to 39.83(DEGREES)C (103.7(DEGREES)F). However, plasma cortisol was significantly suppressed (P < 0.05) during heat stress. Luteolysis was followed by a preovulatory LH surge in all cows following cloprostenol and thus heat stress did not appear to alter the responsiveness of the corpus luteum to cloprostenol and the factors which regulate the hypothalamic control of LH release. Preovulatory LH peaks were preceded by total estrogen peaks and therefore heat stress did not appear to alter the positive feedback of estrogens from the preovulatory follicles to release LH from the pituitary gland. The magnitude of the diurnal variation of cortisol was higher during lower stress. LH peaks were seen irrespective of cortisol concentrations during both higher and lower stress treatments. However, LH peaks coincided with those of cortisol and total estrogens during lower stress treatments in both lactating and non-lactating cows. An altered diurnal variation in rectal temperatures was seen following LH peaks during lower stress. Fifteen transferable embryos were recovered during lower stress (15/34 or 44%) compared to one transferable embryo (1/4 or 25%) during higher stress (P > 0.05) in the superovulation study. Thus it appears that heat stress …

Model Reduction Of Stochastic And Deterministic Continuous Time Linear Systems (Lypunov Equation, Schawrz Approximation)., Khier Benmahammed Jan 1986

Model Reduction Of Stochastic And Deterministic Continuous Time Linear Systems (Lypunov Equation, Schawrz Approximation)., Khier Benmahammed

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Two new approaches for reducing the order of large scale continuous systems are presented. The first approach is a modified version of the aggregation technique. It uses the matching properties of the steady state output covariance and the Markov parameters of the high order system to those of the r('th) order model. This approach also uses a new algorithm derived for the computation of the controllability and observability Grammians, to produce controllable, observable and stable low order models. These is no unique method available for evaluating the aggregation matrix or the matrix relating the system state vector to the model …
