An Adiabatic Study Of The Positronium Negative Ion And Other Three-Particle Systems., Javier Botero Jan 1986

An Adiabatic Study Of The Positronium Negative Ion And Other Three-Particle Systems., Javier Botero

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In an effort to unravel the dependence of the dynamics of three-bound-particle systems on the relative masses of the particles, an adiabatic treatment in hyperspherical coordinates is used to study the ground state and some doubly excited states of Ps('-) (positronium negative ion) and other three-particle systems, including H('-) and M('-) (muonium negative ion). Two different methods for the solution of the adiabatic eigenvalue equation are presented; one uses a "prediagonalized" basis of hyperspherical harmonics, and the other uses an asymptotic basis which consists of hydrogenic functions for the positronium. Potential curves for Ps('-) and M('-) in the ('1)S('e), ('1)P('o), …

A Quasi-Exclusive Measurement Of Carbon-12 (Carbon-12, 3alpha)X At 2.1 Gev/Nucleon., Jon Maurice Engelage Jan 1986

A Quasi-Exclusive Measurement Of Carbon-12 (Carbon-12, 3alpha)X At 2.1 Gev/Nucleon., Jon Maurice Engelage

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The cross section, (sigma)(('12)C + T (--->) 3(alpha) + X) or (sigma)(3(alpha)), and excitation energy spectrum, d(sigma)(3(alpha))/dE('*), for ('12)C have been measured for 2.1 GeV/nucleon ('12)C using a 0.9(g/cm('2)) target of ('12)C. The d(sigma)(3(alpha))/dE('*) spectrum was found to include excitation energies in excess of 50 MeV. The dissociation of ('12)C into three (3) alpha particles at these excitation energies is evidence for clustering in the ('12)C nucleus.

The Algebraic Image Of The Asymmetric Top., Yorck Leschber Jan 1986

The Algebraic Image Of The Asymmetric Top., Yorck Leschber

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The algebraic realization of the quantum mechanical rotor by the SU(3) (--->) SO(3) algebra is investigated. It is shown that a hamiltonian built from rotationally invariant functions of SU(3) generators reproduces the eigenvalues of the rotor hamiltonian. The equivalence of both models is established also for the quadrupole transition rates and the D(,2) symmetry of the rotor. The relation between the SU(3) (--->) SO(3) algebra and the nuclear shell model allows therefore a microscopic interpretation of rotational motion as a many-particle effect.

The Fricative Sound Source Spectrum Derived From A Vocal Tract Analog., Lawrence Edward Zagar Jan 1986

The Fricative Sound Source Spectrum Derived From A Vocal Tract Analog., Lawrence Edward Zagar

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The applications of speech synthesis for computer voice response and speech analysis present the need for highly intelligible and natural synthesized speech. In order to improve the synthesis of fricative and related sounds, the use of simple models for the source spectrum of fricative sounds is investigated. The investigation is based on the use of a vocal tract analog and experimental measurements. Measurements of the sound pressure spectra of fricative consonants are made. Simple sound pressure measurements and measurements based on the technique for measuring intensity are utilized. The fricatives studied are /f/, /th/, /s/, /sh/, and /h/. Fricative sound …
