Labouring Men: Love, Sex And Strife , Mike Donaldson Jul 1987

Labouring Men: Love, Sex And Strife , Mike Donaldson

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

Studies of masculinity and studies of class are incomplete unless they take each other seriously. This article explores the interrelations between class situation and experience, paid work, the family-household, masculinity and male heterosexuality as they are borne and reproduced by labouring men. Against the psycho¬logisation of the 'men's liberationists' this article insists on the salience of structure. It suggests that the working class, of which labouring men are a small part, can be understood in its strategic power and weaknesses only through the study of the whole lives of its members, changing and changed by each other as they stand …

The Inherent Subjectivity Of The Apparently Objective In Research On Ethnicity And Class, Stephen Castles, A Jakubowicz Jan 1987

The Inherent Subjectivity Of The Apparently Objective In Research On Ethnicity And Class, Stephen Castles, A Jakubowicz

Centre for Multicultural Studies Occasional Papers

Policy making in the area of immigration and ethnic affairs relies increasingly on the findings of social science research. A new "conventional wisdom" is emerging in sociological and economic studies. Its claim to objectivity is based on the use of a methodology which emphasises the use of sophisticated statistical methods, especially multiple regression models. The present paper suggests that this apparently objective approach is actually based on a set of of subjectivist and voluntaristic assumptions on: the nature of society, the character of the groups being examined, and on the practice and logic of scientific research.

This type of analysis …

A History Of The Clothing And Allied Trades Union, B. L. Ellem Jan 1986

A History Of The Clothing And Allied Trades Union, B. L. Ellem

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis explores the history of clothing trades' unionism in Australia from its origins in the nineteenth-century until 1967. From 1907 that history is the history of the Clothing and Allied Trades' Union, an organisation established in that year under the aegis of the Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration.

The Introduction establishes explicit organising questions and themes and locates them within current debates about labour history. The Introduction asks the question: 'what is the Clothing Trades' Union?' The thesis examines how this question has been answered by unionists themselves and it examines the circumstances under which those solutions have …

The New South Wales Teachers' Federation, C.1957-1975, John Michael O'Brien

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This work analyses the history of the New South Wales Teachers' Federation from 1957 to 1975. The Federation is one of the largest unions in New South Wales and as an affiliate of the Australian Teachers' Federation, is part of one of the largest industrial organisations of employees in Australia. The period under review was a time of significant economic, political and social change, both in Australia and internationally. This thesis examines the Federation's response to those changes and its attempts to influence the direction of those changes. It seeks to identify the changes within the union and the degree …
