Very fine nano-SiC particles (nm) were doped into a MgB2 superconductor. The influence of self-field supercurrent on the high-field performance of the nano-SiC-doped MgB2/Fe wires is discussed based on comparison of the critical current densities of the in situ processed nano-SiCdoped MgB2 wires and those of the nano-SiC-doped MgB2/Fe wires processed by the combination of in situ/ex situ methods.

Based on the Legendre pseudospectral method, we propose a numerical treatment for pricing perpetual American put option with stochastic volatility. In this simple approach, a nonlinear algebraic equation system is first derived, and then solved by the Gauss–Newton algorithm. The convergence of the current scheme is ensured by constructing a test example similar to the original problem, and comparing the numerical option prices with those produced by the classical Projected SOR (PSOR) method. Treatment of ocular cancers using eye plaque brachytherapy is now an established medical procedure. However, current QA for these eye plaques is quite rudimentary, limiting the opportunities for precise pre-tumour plaque customisation. This paper proposes and experimentally validates a new technique for imaging of eye plaque dose distributions using a high-resolution pixelated silicon detector. Results are presented demonstrating the 2D and 3D isodose surfaces produced using experimental data collected using this method.

During heat treatment process, the distortion behavior inevitably appears in hydraulic turbine blade castings. In this research, a technology was developed for real-time measurement of the distortion in hydraulic turbine blade castings at the still air cooling and forced air cooling stages during heat treatment process. The method was used to measure the distortion behavior at the cooling stages in both normalizing and tempering processes. In China, the practice of multi-seam mining with high gas emission rates is common, and many coal mines are suffering from major gas management issues. To deal with these problems, empirical formulas for gas emission prediction and gas control methods suitable for site-specific conditions are developed. Significant adsorption of sulfamethoxazole and carbamazepine to powdered activated carbon (PAC) was confirmed by a series of adsorption tests. In contrast, adsorption of these micropollutants to the sludge was negligible. The removal of these compounds in membrane bioreactor (MBR) was dependent on their hydrophobicity and loading as well as the PAC dosage. Sulfamethoxazole exhibited better removal rate during operation under no or low (0.1 g/L) PAC dosage. When the PAC concentration in MBR was raised to 1.0 g/L, a sustainable and significantly improved performance in the removal of both compounds was observed – the removal efficiencies of sulfamethoxazole and carbamazepine …

We derive the precise asymptotic distributional behavior of Gaussianvariational approximate estimators of the parameters in a single-predictorPoisson mixed model. These results are the deepest yet obtained concerningthe statistical properties of a variational approximation method. Moreover,they give rise to asymptotically valid statistical inference. A simulation studydemonstrates that Gaussian variational approximate confidence intervals possessgood to excellent coverage properties, and have a similar precision totheir exact likelihood counterparts.

Topic models allow the probabilistic modeling of term frequency occurrences in documents. The fitted model can be used to estimate the similarity between documents as well as between a set of specified keywords using an additional layer of latent variables which are referred to as topics. The R package topicmodels provides basic infrastructure for fitting topic models based on data structures from the text mining package tm. The package includes interfaces to two algorithms for fitting topic models: the variational expectation-maximization algorithm provided by David M. Blei and co-authors and an algorithm using Gibbs sampling by Xuan-Hieu Phan and co-authors.

"Attribution of the causes of atmospheric trace gas and aerosol variability often requires the use of high resolution time series of anthropogenic and natural emissions inventories. Here we developed an approach for representing synoptic-and diurnal-scale temporal variability in fire emissions for the Global Fire Emissions Database version 3 (GFED3). We disaggregated monthly GFED3 emissions during 2003-2009 to a daily time step using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived measurements of active fires from Terra and Aqua satellites. The relatively short life cycles of harpacticoid copepods makes them appropriate animals for use in tests that rapidly assess the #180, sublethal, or chronic effects of sediment contaminants. In this study, four harpacticoid copepod species (Nitocra spinipes, Tisbe tenuimana, Robertgurneya hopkinsi, and Halectinosoma sp.) were isolated from clean marine sediments, and procedures for laboratory culturing were developed. Climate change modelers predict increasingly frequent ''extreme events,'' so it is critical to quantify whether organismal responses (such as reproductive output) measured over the range of usual climatic conditions can predict responses under more extreme conditions. In a 20-year field study on water pythons (Liasis fuscus), we quantified the effects of climatically driven annual variation in food supply on demographic traits of female pythons (feeding rate, body size, body mass, and reproductive output). With the continuing technology innovation, directional drilling technology has provided the coal mining industry with effective and practical options for pre- and post-drainage and exploration in Australia. In the past thirty years, in-mine borehole steering equipment has been developed from the single shot camera survey systems to the advanced Directional Drill Monitor utilizing Modular Electrically Connected Cable Assembly (DDM-MECCA) survey instruments, which provides rapid and easy underground borehole survey measurements whilst drilling.
