Synthesis Of A Novel Terbium(Iii) Complex For Application In Metal Nanoparticle Surface Modification, Lauralee E. Hurst, Davon Ferrara, Justin Stace
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Lanthanide ions, such as terbium(III), exhibit bright luminescence when bound to organic ligands which strongly absorb light. This property has been used in creating chemical sensors or luminescent tags for microscopy. Complexes centered with terbium(III) exhibit a yellow-green luminescence upon excitation by shortwave ultraviolet light. In this work, a bifunctional ligand, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4mba), was chosen to selectively coordinate terbium(III) to the oxygens of the acid functional group, leaving the thiol group available for another compound. Thiol groups are effectively used in surface coordination to noble metal nanoparticles (NP). In efforts to create a novel 4mba-terbium(III)-NP system, a one pot …

Red bell peppers (Capsicum ann. L.) are low in calories and high in nutrients, including vitamins A and C. Various factors such as weight loss, senescence, and microbial influence affect their quality during storage. To address this, the present study aims to preserve and retain the quality of red bell peppers using ultrasound-assisted thin-bed drying. The results were analyzed using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for more accurate prediction of variables involved in the process. Variations in moisture ratio and moisture content during drying were calculated and predicted. The Mid. model provided satisfactory curve fitting at an air velocity of …

The functional role of collagen piezoelectricity has been under debate since the discovery of piezoelectricity in bone in 1957. The possibility that piezoelectricity plays a role in bone remodelling has generated interest in the investigation of this effect in relevant physiological conditions; however, there are conflicting reports as to whether collagen is piezoelectric in a humid environment. In macroscale measurements, the piezoelectricity in hydrated tendon has been shown to be insignificant compared to dehydrated tendon, whereas, at the nanoscale, the piezoelectric effect has been observed in both dry and wet bone using piezo response force microscopy (PFM). In this work, …

Comparing The Iwl-Mvm-Rs And Minstrel-Ht Rate Adaptation Algorithms Under Different Local Error Conditions, Luhan Wang, Mark Davis
Conference papers
WLAN technology has grown rapidly and now provides increasingly reliable and fast wireless connectivity. A number of Rate Adaptation Algorithms (RAAs) which are designed to select the optimal line rate according to the channel conditions have been proposed. Iwl-Mvm-Rs RAA which is implemented in the Intel wireless chips and Minstrel-HT RAA which is implemented in the Linux kernels are two such well known algorithms. Many existing papers evaluate these two algorithms with regard to device mobility and signal fading. However, the causes of frame errors can be divided into two categories: weak signal reception and collisions. Therefore, in this paper, …

The Canada-United States border is the longest land border in the world, stretching more than five thousand miles. The narrative of the Canada-United States border as the “longest undefended border in the world” was reliant on racist images of Canada as a white state. Following the attack on September 11, 2001, this narrative was disrupted and the border became the site of a massive security reconstruction project. Not in the physical sense, but in the scale of funds allocated and technology implemented to control and monitor the flow of movement across the border. Canada’s 2001 budget allocated $1.2 billion towards …

Growing Concerns: The Interactive Effects Of Soil Copper And Microplastics On Soybeans, Lance Javier
2023 Undergraduate Awards
Plastic is a pervasive and persistent environmental pollutant. Widespread use of plastics, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), exacerbate this issue. PET plastics can degrade in the environment and generate microplastics, which can then interact with other substances, including adsorption of metal ions. Copper is a metal that is often applied as a fungicide to agricultural fields, and repeated application leads to its accumulation in soil to a level that inhibits plant growth. I investigated the growth of soybean (Glycine max) in the presence of PET microplastics and copper (CuSO4). I predicted that increased copper in soil …
Erosion: Landscape Reveals Us, John Alexander Mcbride
Erosion: Landscape Reveals Us, John Alexander Mcbride
Dance (MFA) Theses
This thesis explores the connective tissue between the land on which we stand and the body we inhabit. Through the lens of climate change and erosion, this research unveils the lasting effects of severe and traumatic weather patterns on the psychology and physiology of those who continue to endure them. How bodies (capitalistic bodies, collective bodies, and our personal bodies) treat the land and each other affects us all—we are all part of the eroding ecosystem, linked together by the soil beneath our feet. The soil that has been scorched and stolen, mined and massacred. The soil that is fertile …

Needs Salt, Joshua Lang
Dance (MFA) Theses
Researcher Joshua Lang investigates the development of the Eden narrative in western culture. Near the beginning of the book of Genesis, the Eden narrative provides a lens to culturally significant elements of early Hebrew culture. Genesis illustrates early Hebrew culture’s relationship with the natural world, sex, sin, judgment, and death. Similarly, John Milton’s retelling of the narrative in Paradise Lost divulges information about the culture that Milton lived in, as well as a great deal about the author himself. Milton’s blindness, and his opinions on heteronormative marriage, Protestantism, sin, judgment, and death are evident in the text. In Paradise Lost …

Cells continuously experience and respond to different physical forces that are used to regulate their physiology and functions. Our ability to measure these mechanical cues is essential for understanding the bases of various mechanosensing and mechanotransduction processes. While multiple strategies have been developed to study mechanical forces within two-dimensional (2D) cell culture monolayers, the force measurement at cell-cell junctions in real three-dimensional (3D) cell models is still pretty rare. Considering that in real biological systems, cells are exposed to forces from 3D directions, measuring these molecular forces in their native environment is thus highly critical for the better understanding of …

With expanding concern about ticks, there is a general sense of uncertainty about the diagnosis and treatment of tick-borne diseases. The diagnosis process is often based on clinical judgment in conjunction with laboratory testing and can be pathogen specific. Treatments may require disease-dependent approaches, and co-infections complicate or increase the severity of the clinical picture. Measuring exposure indices in the tick has become popular among providers and their patients, though this practice is not universally understood, and certain public health agencies have voiced concerns regarding interpretation and rigor of testing. As many providers subscribe to or recommend these services to …
Direct Listings And The Weakening Of Investor Protections, Brent J. Horton
Direct Listings And The Weakening Of Investor Protections, Brent J. Horton
Florida State University Law Review
In 2018, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) amended its rules to allow a company to directly list on the Big Board without engaging in an initial public offering (IPO). This process-called a direct listingallowed a company to list its stock faster and cheaper, and, at least theoretically, at a more accurate price when compared to the traditional IPO. However, this first version of the NYSE's direct listing rule only allowed the company to list, not raise capital. This limited its usefulness to companies. In 2020, the NYSE again amended its rules, this time to allow a company to list …
The Supreme Court's Fragile Copyright Law, Stephen Yelderman
The Supreme Court's Fragile Copyright Law, Stephen Yelderman
Florida State University Law Review
For a generation, copyright scholars have taken it as a given that copyright law is destined to be disrupted by technological change. The basic problem, they have explained, is that it is impossible for Congress to anticipate the ways that new technologies will affect the creation, distribution, adaptation, and consumption of creative work. While excusing Congress and the courts for copyright law's uncertainties, this view also leads to a kind of resignation. Unless we are to halt the march of technological progress, we must accept the unpredictability of copyright law as an inexorable fact of life. This Article complicates the …

Some thermophilic bacteria from deep-sea hydrothermal vents grow by dissimilatory iron reduction, but our understanding of their biogenic mineral transformations is nascent. Mineral transformations catalyzed by the thermophilic iron-reducing bacterium Desulfovulcanus ferrireducens during growth at 55°C were examined using synthetic nanophase ferrihydrite, akaganeite, and lepidocrocite separately as terminal electron acceptors. Spectral analyses using visible-near infrared (VNIR), Fourier-transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), and Mössbauer spectroscopies were complemented with x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses. The most extensive biogenic mineral transformation occurred with ferrihydrite, which produced a …
Regulatory T Cells Play A Crucial Role In Maintaining Sperm Tolerance And Male Fertility, Maria Gracia Gervasi, Et. Al.
Regulatory T Cells Play A Crucial Role In Maintaining Sperm Tolerance And Male Fertility, Maria Gracia Gervasi, Et. Al.
Veterinary & Animal Sciences Department Faculty Publication Series
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) modulate tissue homeostatic processes and immune responses. Understanding tissue-Treg biology will contribute to developing precision-targeting treatment strategies. Here, we show that Tregs maintain the tolerogenic state of the testis and epididymis, where sperm are produced and mature. We found that Treg depletion induces severe autoimmune orchitis and epididymitis, manifested by an exacerbated immune cell infiltration [CD4 T cells, monocytes, and mononuclear phagocytes (MPs)] and the development of antisperm antibodies (ASA). In Treg-depleted mice, MPs increased projections toward the epididymal lumen as well as invading the lumen. ASA-bound sperm enhance sperm agglutination and might facilitate sperm phagocytosis. …

Research shows that teacher induction programs can be effective as measured by a number of outcomes. However, research also shows that teacher induction programs vary greatly from one district to another. Furthermore, there is no research that examines teacher induction programs with respect to costs and benefits. Educational leaders and stakeholders do not need to wait on formal institutional research to do such an economic evaluation.
This report, in combination with a How-to-Guide, the Teacher Induction Program Cost Matrix and the Teacher Induction Program Benefit-Cost Workbook, comprises a toolkit designed to allow school and district leaders to conduct …

Latent Growth Modeling Of The Attitudes Of Non-Muslims Towards Muslims In College: A Longitudinal Analysis, Musbah Shaheen, Christa Winkler, Matthew Mayhew, Alyssa Rockenbach
College of Education Faculty Publication Series
Attitudes toward Muslims are at the core of addressing the anti-Muslim environments Muslims encounter in college and society writ large. Using longitudinal data, this study shows that colleges can spur the development of appreciative attitudes toward Muslims by non-Muslim students when they engage in two or more informal or formal social engagements across religious and spiritual identity differences. Institutional campus culture is also meaningfully connected to Muslim appreciation. Implications for research, policy, and practice are discussed.

In the last decade or more, academic libraries have taken up the challenge of providing data curation and research data support, bringing expertise in metadata and digital preservation to key aspects of the research data life cycle. This activity has hastened since 2013, when the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) issued a memo directing federal funding agencies to require data, among other products of research, to be shared as a condition of funding.1 The OSTP memo did not come out of the blue, but recognized changes in data practice in some disciplines as the costs of …

Workflows for green and diamond open access (OA) models in a library publishing program may be very similar to one another (green = republishing; diamond = original publishing). As administered in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries, the details of each of these workflows are outlined and compared with each other and compared also with the interaction with authors that stems from gold OA (= outsourcing publishing). Vignettes related to each type of publishing model are included to demonstrate the types of conversations we tend to have with authors about the various OA types and give an indication of how much …
