Fostering Engagement Through Inquiry-Based Learning, Lauren Zanoni
Fostering Engagement Through Inquiry-Based Learning, Lauren Zanoni
John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference
Inquiry-based learning (IBL) occurs when students engage in work that mirrors elements of the scientific process, such as conducting an investigation and communicating results (Martin-Hansen, 2002). Similar to the inquiry process, in Genius Hour students choose a topic they are passionate about, and engage in research and reflection as they create a finished project (Juliani, 2007). In my study, I determined how the incorporation of inquiry-based learning in a fifth grade classroom facilitates students’ cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement. Within this study, cognitive engagement refers to students’ investment and motivation to learn, behavioral engagement involves the positive conduct students show …

A Recommender System Against Social Media Addiction Among Adolescents, Adrian Rafael Dc. Bernandino, Karl Dominic L. Rodrigo, Shirley B. Chu
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Social media is a dominant and an ever-expanding platform for social interaction and communication. In its popularity, Social Media Addiction (SMA) emerged as an unintended consequence, affecting a handful of users. Recommender Systems (RS) have been proven to be useful in domains such as health and alcoholism prevention. This study develops a prototype RS against SMA using a user’s personality dimensions and status of SMA. The prototype used a user-based collaborative filtering (CF) approach in recommending items. The prototype will also undergo an evaluation phase but this will not be included in the scope of this paper. The RS prototype …

Toward The Development Of An Ultra-Fast, Bright Photoelectron Emission Source Using Tip Enhancement, Pei-Hsiang Yen, Erik J. Sanchez
Student Research Symposium
With the advancement of technology, people are pursuing even higher-resolution analysis results from metrology tools. When results are provided with temporal information, one can add a new dimension to the results. This research involves the development of a new temporal electron source by utilizing tip enhancement, which necessitates the creation of a novel type of emitter that emits electrons on a femtosecond (fs) time scale. Due to the nature of the electron’s mass, under the influence of an electric field they move quickly. To achieve our goal is the design of a resonant nano antenna (or known as a nantenna) …

Controlled Digital Lending Is Dead; Long Live Cdl / Progress Report From Project Lend: Uc's Initiative To Expand Digital Access For Copyrighted Material, Sagan Wallace, Rice Majors
Digital Initiatives Symposium
From Sagan Wallace:
Much has been said about the future of controlled digital lending (CDL) after the 2023 Hachette vs Internet Archive ruling. Some say CDL is on legally shaky ground, and others say CDL will continue to revolutionize how libraries provide materials. I believe these questions are a distraction from a significant issue in many CDL collections - inadequate accessibility.
My institution is a heavy user of CDL, with over 700 scanned textbooks. We formed a task force to identify the best methods to make our CDL collection more accessible. We found that creating screen reader accessible materials takes …

Dance is a highly aerobic form of exercise that can play a large role in heart health. Typically, the greater the tempo of a dance style, the more it will impact heart rate.1 Hip-hop and jazz are very fast and upbeat, likely to increase heart rate the most. Contemporary can be either fast or slow depending on the choreographer. Ballet can also be fast or slow, but is extremely demanding on the body, indicating that heart rate could be greatly increased. The purpose of this experiment was to determine which styles of dance increase heart rate the most in experienced …

I lived a great childhood, and I mean really great. I had a seemingly stable home life and the world was full of colors and endless possibilities. Then suddenly, on my twentieth birthday, I found myself locked in a psych ward not wanting to be alive. Imagine growing up in a world full of colors. Everything is bright and happy and you live in a house full of love, safety, and security. Then, once you hit early adulthood, the world goes gray.
Sometimes, you cannot always describe why you feel a certain way or why things are the way that …

When called out for prejudiced behavior, people exhibit varied emotional and behavioral reactions. Emotions like guilt or empathy can drive adaptive behavioral responses like self-correction, while anger or resentment can provoke maladaptive responses, such as hostility and dismissiveness. This research explored how naturally occurring emotion regulation strategies, like cognitive reappraisal and rumination, influence these emotional and behavioral reactions. We asked 250 U.S. adults to recall a time when they had acted offensively and were consequently confronted for it. We then recorded their emotion regulation strategies and resultant responses. Our findings revealed that reappraisal led to self-correction by intensifying guilt and …
