Cracking Studies Of High-Performance Concrete For Bridge Decks, Zhiguo Gong Jan 2006

Cracking Studies Of High-Performance Concrete For Bridge Decks, Zhiguo Gong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The cracking problem has been one of the major concerns for any concrete bridge deck, especially for cast-in-place concrete decks. The cracking can accelerate deterioration of the structure, thereby increasing maintenance costs and potentially shortening the system service-life. In order to achieve low permeability and reasonable strength, HPC deck mixture designs usually include a higher cementitious material content, which means more shrinkage, and therefore, makes the bridge deck more susceptible to cracking. Thus, further and better understanding of shrinkage and cracking properties of HPC designated for bridge decks is necessary. As part of a comprehensive project, this dissertation is focused …

Theory Of Mind And The Assessment Of Suggestibility In Preschoolers, Aryn C. Karpinski Jan 2006

Theory Of Mind And The Assessment Of Suggestibility In Preschoolers, Aryn C. Karpinski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Researchers have been examining the relation between theory of mind and suggestibility with mixed results. Recently, researchers have suggested that theory of mind is not a dichotomous construct, but instead develops in a sequence (Wellman & Liu, 2004). This view, when combined with an examination suggestibility, may clarify the relation. The purpose of this study was to validate the Video Suggestibility Scale for Children (VSSC; Scullin & Ceci, 2001) and a theory of mind scale as predictors of suggestibility in an interview about an experienced and a non-experienced event. Ninety-one preschoolers, ages 3 to 5 years old, completed the 3-week …

Different soil types were obtained by mixing Ohio River sand and Kaolinite clay in different proportions depending on the desired hydraulic conductivity. In this research …

Enlightened Defense: The National Security *Policy Of Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Leonhard Jan 2006

Enlightened Defense: The National Security *Policy Of Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Leonhard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The triumph of Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic Republicans in 1800 left the deposed Federalists aghast at what this Francophile, anti nationalist, reputedly atheistic president might do to the country. Despite Jefferson's impulses toward pacifism, national isolation, the diffusion of political power, and healing faction, the eight years of his two administrations were destined to be as calm as a hurricane. The turbulent situation in Europe had already made a mockery of Washington's advice to avoid entanglement, and during Jefferson's presidency, the dangers only increased.;Jefferson's ideas on national security were diametrically opposed to those of Alexander Hamilton and the Federalists. …

Revisiting Capital Punishment: Factors That Matter When Receiving The Death Penalty (A State By State Analysis), Bridget Ann Micka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Although the death penalty is popular by most accounts, is it really a good social policy? The purpose of this study is to add to this discussion by examining the factors that directly impact death penalty cases. The data used in this study come from the state level database which contains information on all decisions of initial capital direct, state and federal habeas corpus cases between 1973 and 1995. What are the factors that lead some state compared to others to use the death penalty more often? Some have suggested that this could be the result of a minority-majority conflict. …

The Effects Of Residual Trees On Regeneration Dynamics Following A Diameter Limit Harvest, Travis J. Deluca Jan 2006

The Effects Of Residual Trees On Regeneration Dynamics Following A Diameter Limit Harvest, Travis J. Deluca

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Ten years after diameter-limit cutting, shading from residual trees had a negative effect on regeneration growth in three Appalachian hardwood stands. Regardless of shade tolerance, saplings growing outside the crown shading of residual overstory trees had higher densities and were taller and larger in diameter. Most shade-intolerant and mid-tolerant species decreased in total height and diameter as overstory basal area increased. Black cherry height (p<0.0001) and diameter (p=0.0002) had a significant negative relationship with increasing overstory basal area. Total height of shade-tolerant species was not affected and diameter showed a positive relationship. Red maple diameter had a significant positive relationship (p<0.0001) with increasing overstory basal area. Rehabilitation of stands after diameter-limit cutting requires silvicultural release operations to reduce competition in the new cohort.
