High School Football Player's Nutritional Knowledge And Application, Kimberly A. Molnar May 2006

High School Football Player's Nutritional Knowledge And Application, Kimberly A. Molnar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Objective. The purpose of this study is to determine the nutritional knowledge of high school football players and to determine the application of this knowledge through their food choices. A total of 56.1% participants (n=32) answered 17 or more questions correctly on the nutritional knowledge questionnaire. There was a significant difference between the number correct on the nutritional knowledge questionnaire and year in school between freshman and sophomores. A significant difference was found between year in school and responses for question number seven on the diet recall between freshman and seniors, and juniors and seniors. High School football players lack …

Analysis Of Different Class Sizes On Decision Making Processes And Teaching Behaviors Of Highly Experienced Teachers (Hets) And Less Experienced Teachers (Lets), Ha Young Kim May 2006

Analysis Of Different Class Sizes On Decision Making Processes And Teaching Behaviors Of Highly Experienced Teachers (Hets) And Less Experienced Teachers (Lets), Ha Young Kim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Objectives. This study examined the decision making process employed by two highly experienced teachers (HETs) and two less experienced teachers (LETS) as they planned for and taught lessons with two different class sizes; n=15-16 and n=30-31. A secondary purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of class size on teaching behaviors and student learning. Finally, this study used in-depth interviews to describe concerns associated with teaching and preparing lessons for classes of different size.;Design and setting. This was a mixed-methods study that utilized both behavioral analysis and qualitative methods of investigation. Qualitative methods included think-aloud, stimulated-recall techniques and …

The Effects Of Activity Related Fatigue On Dynamic Postural Control As Measured By The Star Excursion Balance Test, Timothy A. Kulpa May 2006

The Effects Of Activity Related Fatigue On Dynamic Postural Control As Measured By The Star Excursion Balance Test, Timothy A. Kulpa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this study was to examine how dynamic postural control as measured by the Star Excursion Balance Test, was affected by an activity related fatiguing protocol. Forty male and female students from West Virginia University volunteered to participate. They completed the pre-test in all eight directions with the average of the three trials calculated for each direction. They then performed a functional fatiguing protocol that lasted 20 minutes with their rating of perceived exertion measured before, during and after. After completing the fatiguing protocol the post-test on the SEBT was in all eight directions. There was a significant …

The Comparative Effects Of A Six-Week Balance Training Program, Gluteus Medius Strength Training Program, And Combined Balance Training/Gluteus Medius Strength Training Program On Dynamic Postural Control, Vincent J. Leavey May 2006

The Comparative Effects Of A Six-Week Balance Training Program, Gluteus Medius Strength Training Program, And Combined Balance Training/Gluteus Medius Strength Training Program On Dynamic Postural Control, Vincent J. Leavey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Little is known about proprioception, gluteus medius strength, or combination training programs for improving dynamic balance. The purpose of this study was to assess the outcome of six weeks of gluteus medius strength training, proprioception training, and a combination of the two on dynamic balance. The study was a 2x4x8 and a 2x4 factorial design with three experimental groups and a control group. This study included 48 healthy, physically active, college-aged subjects. The six-week protocol for the experimental groups was conducted following a specific program three times a week for an average of 30-minutes. The proprioception training program included a …

The Transtheoretical Model And Psychological Skills Training: Application And Implications With Elite Female Athletes, Linda Ann Keeler Jan 2006

The Transtheoretical Model And Psychological Skills Training: Application And Implications With Elite Female Athletes, Linda Ann Keeler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

There is abundant empirical evidence supporting the benefits of psychological skills training (PST) on performance (Vealey, 1994). Despite evidence of how PST can help athletic performance, some athletes still do not readily adopt its use (Gould, Tammen, Murphy, & May, 1989). Rather than ignoring individuals that are not interested (Weinberg & Williams, 2001), one possible method of approach would be to apply the transtheoretical model of behavior change (TTM) to the use of PST (Grove, Norton, Van Raalte, & Brewer, 1999). This model suggests that behavior change is a progression through a series of stages (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1983). There …

The Effects Of Interactive Video (Ddr) On Heart Rate, Perceived Exertion, Step Count, Self -Efficacy, And Enjoyment In Elementary School Children, Barbara J. Olmsted Jan 2006

The Effects Of Interactive Video (Ddr) On Heart Rate, Perceived Exertion, Step Count, Self -Efficacy, And Enjoyment In Elementary School Children, Barbara J. Olmsted

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Rising levels of obesity continue to challenge physical educators to engage their students in activities sufficiently vigorous to accrue health-related benefits. Physically active video games are now recognized as a way to enhance physical activity levels in children. A school-based intervention in fifth- and sixth-grade participants (N=33) compared six lessons each of Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), volleyball, and an exercise video (Tae-Bo) according to the following dependent variables: heart rate, step count, active time, rate of perceived exertion, enjoyment, and self-efficacy. Repeated measures within-subjects comparisons revealed significant main effects for activity type across five dependent variables, and significant interactions for …

Does Physical Disability Truly Create Impairment In Adjustment To College Life?, Jennifer R. Hurst Jan 2006

Does Physical Disability Truly Create Impairment In Adjustment To College Life?, Jennifer R. Hurst

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This research utilized a mixed methods design to explore the differences between students with and without disabilities in perceived social support, coping style, self efficacy, and college adjustment. In addition, the influence of athletic participation on the above variables was examined in the sub-sample of students with disabilities. Neither survey nor interview results supported any differences between students with disabilities and students without disabilities on the study variables. Results suggested that discrepancies in college outcome variables (i.e. matriculation and persistence) were not a result of differences in disability status, but are the result of differences in adjustment, perceived social support, …
