Application Of A Statistical Zonation Technique To Granny Creek Field In West Virginia, Venkata Kristamsetty Dec 2006

Application Of A Statistical Zonation Technique To Granny Creek Field In West Virginia, Venkata Kristamsetty

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The significance of dividing the sedimentary intervals into flow units reflects groups of rocks that has similar geologic, physical properties and depositional environment that affect fluid flow. Variations in rock properties result from depositional, diagenetic and post-depositional changes. A flow unit is a volume of a reservoir rock that is continuous laterally and vertically and has similar averages of those rock properties that affect fluid flow.;In this study, a statistical zonation technique developed by Testerman to identify and describe naturally occurring zones in a reservoir is applied to Granny Creek field in West Virginia. This technique is particularly useful in …

The Study Of Down-Hole Hydro-Cyclone Efficiency In Oil Wells Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Ahmed A. Yusuf Dec 2006

The Study Of Down-Hole Hydro-Cyclone Efficiency In Oil Wells Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Ahmed A. Yusuf

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Water is by far the largest waste stream associated with oil and gas production and it is unimaginable to find an oil reservoir absolutely free from connate water. Water management has become an important issue of hydrocarbon production, since the produced water increases as the field grows older and the cost of water handling, such as separation, treatment and repair is dramatically increasing. Down-Hole Separation (DOWS) and re-injection results in the production of oil to the surface, while portions of water are injected to the underground formation without ever being lifted to the surface.;DOWS depends on geological characteristics of the …

Determining Low Permeability Formation Properties From Absolute Open Flow Potential, Fatemeh Belyadi Dec 2006

Determining Low Permeability Formation Properties From Absolute Open Flow Potential, Fatemeh Belyadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Absolute Open Flow Potential (AOFP) is often the only productivity information available from low permeability gas formations particularly in the Appalachian Basin. Absolute Open Flow Potential (AOFP) is commonly evaluated through a single point test due to its cost effectiveness. In low permeability reservoirs, the time required for obtaining stabilized flow rate is often very long. Therefore, stabilized AOFP may not be achieved in short tests. Furthermore, most low permeability gas wells are hydraulically fractured to improve their productivity. Therefore, the post-fracture measured AOFP could be significantly influenced by fracture properties.;The objective of this was to develop a methodology to …

Analysis Of Single-Point Test To Determine Skin Factor, Abbas Belyadi Dec 2006

Analysis Of Single-Point Test To Determine Skin Factor, Abbas Belyadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Single-point test results can be used to obtain information regarding the degree of damage in gas wells in the gas storage reservoirs. Single-point test is neither time-consuming nor costly to determine the productivity of a well. Furthermore, flow stabilization times would be short in high permeability gas storage reservoirs. Generally, a four-point test is conducted first to establish the deliverability relation. After some period of time, namely one year, a single-point test could be conducted. The results of the single-point and four-point tests can then be compared in order to identify any alteration in well performance.;The objective of this research …

Productivity Index Of Multilateral Wells, Upender Naik Nunsavathu Aug 2006

Productivity Index Of Multilateral Wells, Upender Naik Nunsavathu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

In the history of petroleum science there are a vast variety of productivity solutions for different well types, well configurations and flow regimes. The main well types that were considered for calculating the productivity indexes were vertical wells and horizontal wells. The configurations considered were multilayer perforations, dual lateral wells with laterals at same depths, stacked wells etc. There are few solutions to estimate the well productivity for complex configurations like multilateral wells.;The main objective of this work is to identify a numerical solution method for calculating productivity indexes for different well configurations like single vertical well, single horizontal well, …

The Effect Of Reservoir Characteristics On Methane Production From Hydrate Bearing Formations, Sachin Gandra Aug 2006

The Effect Of Reservoir Characteristics On Methane Production From Hydrate Bearing Formations, Sachin Gandra

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Demand for natural gas is ever increasing and according to DOE [1], by 2040, 10 Tcf/yr of gas has to be imported. Interest in the potentially large deposits of natural gas hydrates and hydrate capped gas reservoirs is increasing because a conservative estimate of gas hydrate reserve potential of US exclusive economic zone is 200,000 Tcf [2, 3]. If 1% of this were recovered, that would be greater than the cumulative gas reserves of conventional gas sources (1000-1500 Tcf). Even 1% production of this recovered gas per year would make USA the exporter of gas.;Gas hydrates are solid, crystalline ice …

The Impact Of Relative Permeability On Type Curves For Coalbed Methane Reservoirs, Sunil Lakshminarayanan Aug 2006

The Impact Of Relative Permeability On Type Curves For Coalbed Methane Reservoirs, Sunil Lakshminarayanan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Coalbed methane (CBM) is considered an unconventional gas resource produced from coal seams usually with low permeability at shallow depths. Analyzing the production performance in CBM reservoirs is challenging, especially at the early stages of recovery. Most of the small producers in the Appalachian Basin cannot afford personnel or meet economical requirements involved in the use of the numerical simulator to evaluate CBM reservoirs. Production type curves are an excellent tool for predicting the performance of CBM reservoirs. A set of type curves have been previously developed for horizontal and vertical wells in CBM reservoirs. The relative permeability characteristics have …

A Pc-Based Fluid And Heat Transfer Analyzer For Two-Phase Flow In Pipes, Gbolahan Afonja Aug 2006

A Pc-Based Fluid And Heat Transfer Analyzer For Two-Phase Flow In Pipes, Gbolahan Afonja

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Modeling the simultaneous flow of gas and liquid or two-phase gas-liquid flow in pipes is a key aspect in petroleum production. These models can enhance our ability to estimate fluid properties, predict pressure loss, liquid holdup, and flow pattern, and to see the effects of introducing concepts such as heat transfer to the system. Modeling two-phase flow phenomenon also allows visualization of the interaction of one property or parameter to another. The understanding of heat transfer in two-phase gas-liquid flow is important for economic and optimized operations.;This work focuses on the design of a PC-Based Software for modeling the effect …

The Impact Of Reservoir Properties On Mixing Of Inert Cushion And Natural Gas In Storage Reservoirs, Balaji S. Srinivasan May 2006

The Impact Of Reservoir Properties On Mixing Of Inert Cushion And Natural Gas In Storage Reservoirs, Balaji S. Srinivasan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Underground natural gas storage is a process which effectively balances a variable demand market with a nearly constant supply of energy provided by the pipeline system. Cushion gas in storage reservoirs provide the necessary pressure for the withdrawal of working gas and it makes up for the largest part of investments in underground storage reservoirs. Usually, a part of the cushion gas is replaced by an inert gas such as Nitrogen in order to reduce the investment costs. Due to this replacement there might be problems caused by the mixing of inert cushion and natural gas, which is a cause …

Development Of Gas Production Type Curves For Horizontal Wells In Coalbed Methane Reservoirs, Allen Ekahnzok Nfonsam May 2006

Development Of Gas Production Type Curves For Horizontal Wells In Coalbed Methane Reservoirs, Allen Ekahnzok Nfonsam

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Coalbed methane is an unconventional gas resource that consists of methane production from coal seams. The unique difference between CBM and conventional gas reservoirs is that it is a dual-porosity system characterized by complex interaction of the coal matrix and cleat system that are coupled through the desorption process. Coalbed methane reservoir performance is controlled by a complex set of reservoir, geologic, completion and operation parameters. To date there are very little tools to help with predicting the performance of CBM wells.;The purpose of this research was to develop a simple and reliable tool to help with gas production predictions …
