Faith, Power, And Conflict: Miner Preachers And The United Mine Workers Of America In The Harlan County Mine Wars, 1931--1939, Carletta A. Bush

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Early accounts of the Harlan County mine wars place the inability of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) to establish a permanent foothold in the county, first at the feet of the Harlan County Coal Operators Association (HCCOA) and secondly at the worn work boots of miners who, when work was plentiful, saw little or no need for a union. The power of the HCCOA is not in question. Its members used their immense wealth and influence to build a million dollar war chest to fight the union and to maintain their iron-clad grip upon the county's political, judicial, …

Left Arm Of The Republic: The Department Of The Pacific During The Civil War, James Robbins Jewell Dec 2006

Left Arm Of The Republic: The Department Of The Pacific During The Civil War, James Robbins Jewell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Although the Civil War was fought largely in the East it was a transcontinental war. Securing the Far West for the Union played an important, though secondary role in the northern war effort. When most of the Regular Army units were called east, holding the region and confronting the multiple threats to its security fell to the western volunteers. Through their efforts, they maintained a general stability in a vast region where both potential and actualized threats could easily have hampered Union efforts in the main theatres of war. Therefore, by quelling secessionist schemes and activities and attempting to maintain …

A Hairy Predicament: The Problem With Long Hair In The 1960s And 1970s, Andrew Robert Herrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

By the mid-1970s long hair worn by much of the American youth evoked little comment and indeed was considered fashionable. But during much of the previous two decades male hair length was a contentious issue that divided the generations. The struggle over hair in many ways epitomized the sixties generation's challenge to authority and their claim to individual rights. During the era, the meaning of long hair changed dramatically from what it was during the fifties. It began as a symbol of youth culture rebellion linked to music. By the latter part of the sixties, however, it became associated with …

Government Hesitancy Amidst Industry Discord: Decline Of The United States-Flag Merchant Marine After World War Ii, Deborah J. Hennen Aug 2006

Government Hesitancy Amidst Industry Discord: Decline Of The United States-Flag Merchant Marine After World War Ii, Deborah J. Hennen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The American-flag merchant marine became the world's largest during World War II. U.S.-flag ships carried most of the nation's commerce, and the world looked to America for shipping strength. After the war, the different parties in the maritime industry began to fight for their individual interests as the American standard of living became the highest in the world. The federal government hesitated to step in and calm the growing discord, and several decades passed as American maritime policy stagnated. Only after the parties in the industry began cooperating with each other did Congress take positive steps to aid the American-flag …

Silent, No More: The 1974 Kanawha County Textbook Controversy And The Rise Of Conservatism In America, Justin J. Mchenry May 2006

Silent, No More: The 1974 Kanawha County Textbook Controversy And The Rise Of Conservatism In America, Justin J. Mchenry

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Silent, No More explores the 1974 Kanawha County textbook controversy, and places it within the context of the rise of conservatism in America. This rise can be seen in the upsurge of grassroots, community activism in the seventies, the White Backlash associated with the campaigns of George Wallace, the New Right, and the New Christian Right. The thesis shows how the Kanawha County protestors' words and actions paralleled that of aforementioned conservative movements, creating, in the end, one of the first manifestations of a single-issue conservative uprising in the seventies.

Creating Virginia: The Role Of John Lederer In The Transition Of Western Virginia From A Wilderness Into A Colony, Richard Jason Burns

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

This thesis seeks to explore and explain the role of John Lederer, a German physician and expedition leader, in the creation of the colony of Virginia. Lederer led three expeditions into the western mountains of Virginia in the years 1670-71, and was the first European to document his expeditions in writing. Sir William Berkeley, Governor of Virginia, commissioned him to explore the western frontier of Virginia in hopes of finding a short route to the East India Sea. The immense commodities, trade, and settlement possibilities within the western Virginia region eventually overshadowed this initial goal.;Following the three expeditions, Lederer's expedition …

Enlightened Defense: The National Security *Policy Of Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Leonhard Jan 2006

Enlightened Defense: The National Security *Policy Of Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Leonhard

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The triumph of Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic Republicans in 1800 left the deposed Federalists aghast at what this Francophile, anti nationalist, reputedly atheistic president might do to the country. Despite Jefferson's impulses toward pacifism, national isolation, the diffusion of political power, and healing faction, the eight years of his two administrations were destined to be as calm as a hurricane. The turbulent situation in Europe had already made a mockery of Washington's advice to avoid entanglement, and during Jefferson's presidency, the dangers only increased.;Jefferson's ideas on national security were diametrically opposed to those of Alexander Hamilton and the Federalists. …

Honor, Patriarchy, And Disunion: Masculinity And The Coming Of The American Civil War, Kenneth A. Deitreich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The dissertation explores the nature of antebellum masculinity and its role in bringing on the American Civil War. It focuses its attention on two crucial episodes of the sectional crisis: the attack on Senator Sumner and the Secession Crisis of 1861 and on the four individuals, Preston Brooks, Charles Sumner, Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln, who played prominent roles in those episodes.;Among the issues it explores are the degree to which Northern and Southern ideas of manhood differed and the degree to which Northerners and Southerners associated manhood with sectional identity. Did Southerners associate being a man with being a …
