Virulence factors and the bacterial cell envelope are two important components in S. aureus pathogenesis and survival. More importantly, understanding the regulation of these cellular processes is crucial to further understanding and combating this successful pathogen. To date, numerous factors have been identified as playing a role in the regulation of Agr activity in S. aureus, including transcription factors, antisense RNAs, and host elements. Herein we investigate the product of SAUSA300_1984 (termed MroQ), a transmembrane G5 peptidase family protein, as a novel effector of this system. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths for women in the U.S. Although the overall 5-year survival rate for breast cancer is 90%, this rate drops substantially for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) due to its high metastatic potential. Furthermore, there is a lack of targeted therapeutics for TNBC, and clinical trials have been largely unsuccessful. These characteristics validate the need for identifying novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of TNBC. The study of alternative splicing (AS) has emerged as a powerful tool to elucidate the molecular underpinnings driving cancer.

A select few African American families who have a child with a disability have the skills and knowledge to be proactive in the special education process. Special education teams must guide and mentor African American students and their families through the special education process. However, African American families have consistently contended that their child’s special education team does not provide the services necessary to meet their child’s academic goals. Problem: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects eight million Americans and is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. in people 60-85 years of age. Veterans are at a 45% greater risk to develop PAD than non-veterans. Left untreated, PAD can progress to hospitalization for revascularization, amputation, or death. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends using a standardized screening tool for the diagnosis of PAD; however, a lack of standardized screening is problematic in veterans receiving proper intervention.

Rejection of gay men by parents is a frequent occurrence. Rhoades et al. (2018) found 49% of a sample of 657 sexual minority children had experienced parental rejection due to their LGBTQ+ identity. However, the current body of literature does not discuss those heterosexual parents who initially reject their sexual minority children and then return to a place of acceptance. Within the framework of attachment theory, this dissertation used a basic qualitative approach, influenced by Grounded Theory methods, to investigate the experience of heterosexual parents who move toward acceptance of their gay son. Incarnational literacy is a multimodal, maker-centered, arts-based literacy engagement. As an emerging method and theoretical orientation, it incorporates core principles and transformative tools from the domains of creativity, arts-based inquiry, literacy, and spirituality. Many researchers have catalogued best practices of board governance. Most of the existing research employed surveys to review compliance with these practices, and the results are highly quantitative as well as self-reported. This study used interviews of board members representing a cross-section of nonprofits to examine conformity with recommended governance best practices and procedures as well as to provide insight into how these practices have changed during their tenure.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 nonprofit board members in the Tampa Bay area. A variety of process configurations are employed at municipal water reclamation facilities (WRFs), such as 5-stage Bardenpho, oxidation ditch, modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) process, and sidestream recycle. However, all of these configurations face certain challenges in achieving optimum treatment of nitrogen and phosphorus. This dissertation explores the application of Silvester's space-time block code to the multi-index CPM called "ARTM CPM" in the IRIG 106 standard to solve the "two antenna problem"---the use of two transmit antennas to provide full spatial coverage on an airborne test article and the accompanying self interference due to different delays between the two transmit antennas and the ground-based receive antenna. A symbol-level encoding scheme is derived that allows the burst-based space-time block code to operate in a continuously streaming mode. This study examined the impact of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) on executive function using a series of operant conditioning based tasks in rats. Sprague Dawley rats were randomized to either non-diabetic (n = 12; 6 male) or diabetic (n = 14; 6 male) groups. Diabetes was induced using multiple low-dose streptozotocin injections. All diabetic rodents were insulin-treated using subcutaneous insulin pellet implants. At week 14 of the study, rats were placed on a food restricted diet to induce 5 - 10% weight loss. Self-immolative polymers (SIPs) are a subset of degradable polymers that can be triggered to fully depolymerize with a single stimulus event. This amplifying behaviour makes them ideal for real-world applications including sensors, recyclable plastics, and drug delivery vehicles. Polyglyoxylates (PGs) are a class of SIPs that can be synthesized in a one-pot reaction and designed to respond to different stimuli including light, heat, reduction, and oxidation. However, with the exception of poly(ethyl glyoxylate) (PEtG), the various glyoxylate monomers must be prepared and purified before polymerization, which can be difficult. The paradigm of forms of address has been a recurrent topic of study from a sociolinguistic perspective. Voseo, tuteo and ustedeo are the forms of address used in the Hispanic world. Voseo expreses confidence and familiarity, while tuteo same as voseo, denotes confidence and familiarity. Finally, ustedeo has a connotation of formality, respect and distance. Dopamine autoreceptors (DARs) and dopamine transporters (DATs) influence dopamine transmission in the brain's mesolimbic pathway. Prior studies have focused on how activation of DARs influences trafficking of DATs, but how DATs influence DARs remains unclear. Male and female C57BL/6J mice received daily injections of either cocaine (DAT blocker) or saline for seven days then underwent stereotaxic surgery to obtain fixed potential amperometric recordings of DAR-mediated dopamine release. All mice received a mid-surgery injection of cocaine, and DAR-mediated dopamine release was assessed once more during maximal DAT blockade. The design of cryogenic propellant storage systems for long duration space missions relies on accurate prediction of tank self-pressurization. Incident solar radiation heats the cryogenic liquids in the tank over time, vaporizing the cryogenic liquid. As the liquid vaporizes, the tank pressure increases. The objective of the current research is to develop a finite volume based Compuational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model of tank pressurization in reduced gravity using an Energy of Fluid (EOF) method. This project analyzed the viability of using pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) for energy recovery in seawater desalination facilities using brine concentrate (the draw solution) and other water sources (the feed solution) such as wastewater effluent. I was born and raised in rural Florida on a tributary of the Withlacoochee River. “Withlacoochee” comes from a series of Muscogee Creek words that together mean “big little water,” possibly owing to the seasonal fluctuations in the breadth and flow of the river or to the chain of lakes that in part form it. Remote sensing surveys on other planets indicate the presence of lava tubes. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) has shown great potential for detection of tunnels in terrestrial environments. The Carsons settled in the Soap Creek Valley and took advantage of Oregon's Provisional Government's donation land claim program, living on 640 acres in the newly formed Benton County with Martha and a second child, a son named Adam, born a few years after arriving in Oregon. The current project focused on studying an innovative and novel method, called hydrogen evolution assisted (HEA) electroplating, for rapid and localized electrochemical copper deposition that can be applied for integration of electronic circuits to printed circuit boards (PCBs) and fabrics for developing smart textile (e-textile) and advanced wearable electronics.
