Moments, Matthew Benjamin Mcmilon Dec 2016

Moments, Matthew Benjamin Mcmilon

Theses Digitization Project

I am an interdisciplinary artist, educator and writer from Southern California. My practice explores the ways in which images, text and even something as complex as human identity are all made up of fragmented parts that work together to establish visual narrative. Working across multiple media, I create artworks that are lyrical and chaotic and place them in highly aestheticized conditions. My work depicts universal themes of love, loss and resilience over social and political oppression. Additionally, my work questions ideas of social and personal validity, agency and the visually queer.

The Effects Of Volunteer And Required Participation In Evidence-Based Juvenile Justice Programs, Jr Williams Louis George. Jan 2013

The Effects Of Volunteer And Required Participation In Evidence-Based Juvenile Justice Programs, Jr Williams Louis George.

Theses Digitization Project

This study examines how the methods of assigning evidence-based programs are to be conducted for high risk youth in the juvenile justice system. It compares the costs of programs versus the costs of incarceration. The data collection site was NA Charderjian Youth Correctional Facility in Stockton, California. The "Incarcerated Men Putting Away Childish Things (IMPACT) program" was selected for this study. The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation/Division of Juvenile Justice contracts with IMPACT, a non-profit organization, to facilitate self-help groups with a goal to reduce violence in institutions. A Likert scale questionnaire was used to survey 50 subjects.

Elucidating The Role Of Dopamine In The Avoidance Response Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Utilizing Microfluidics, Patricia Frances Turturro Jan 2013

Elucidating The Role Of Dopamine In The Avoidance Response Of Caenorhabditis Elegans Utilizing Microfluidics, Patricia Frances Turturro

Theses Digitization Project

This study looks at dopamine modulation of ASH neurons, which are part of the avoidance circuit of C. elegans, and their response to water soluble stimuli. Because nematodes such as Caenorhabditis elegans utilize dopamine at the molecular and cellular level in much the same way as mammals, they offer researchers a unique opportunity to study the mechanisms of dopamine signaling.

Comparison And Evaluation Of Black Carbon And Elemental Carbon Instrumentation In A Near Roadway Environment, Brandon James Feenstra Jan 2013

Comparison And Evaluation Of Black Carbon And Elemental Carbon Instrumentation In A Near Roadway Environment, Brandon James Feenstra

Theses Digitization Project

This study was conducted at a site adjacent to the I-710 freeway in Long Beach California from March 7 to April 8 of 2012 to evaluate various black carbon and elemental carbon aerosol measurement methods. The measurement of carbonaceous aerosol is a growing field of study because of increasing interest into the climate and health effects of black carbon (BC), and important constituent of atmospheric particular matter (PM). Elemental carbon (EC) and BC are measurements of similar portions of carbon particulate matter, but two measures are operationally defined according to the method used for their detection.

Stereotactic Localization And Targeting Accuracy For Experimental Proton Radiosurgery, Yin Chen Jan 2013

Stereotactic Localization And Targeting Accuracy For Experimental Proton Radiosurgery, Yin Chen

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this study was to improve an existing experimental proton radiosurgery system at Loma Linda University Medical Center to reach sub-millimeter accuracy before proton radiosurgery with narrow beams can be used in a clinical trial. Protons, different from photons (i.e., x-rays or gamma rays), are charged with particles that slow down in matter and release a burst of energy near the end of their range (maximum depth of penetration), which is called the Bragg peak, named after the physicist William Henry Bragg who discovered it in 1903. Photon beams deliver most doses over a large area near the …

Dopaminergic Modulation Of Glutamate Signaling In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Melvin Suman Baidya

Theses Digitization Project

This study investigates how DA (dopamine) modulates GLU (glutamate) signaling at the interneuron level of the C. elegans avoidance circuit in response to the noxious chemical 1-octanol. Many neural processes involved in addiction, exhibit cellular mechanisms using the neurotransmitters dopamine and glutamate along with their intracellular and genomic targets.

Fiducial-Free Alignment Verification Techniques For Intracranial Radiosurgery, Kenneth Matthew Williams Jan 2013

Fiducial-Free Alignment Verification Techniques For Intracranial Radiosurgery, Kenneth Matthew Williams

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis serves as the basis for a method using image registration to automate patient alignment in an effort to eliminate the dependency on the fiducial markers as well as improve the accuracy efficiency of the alignment process. Proton beams are an external beam modality of radiation therapy that can be used effectively for radiosurgical applications due to the dosimetry advantage of the Bragg peak. The Bragg peak is a phenomenon exploited by proton beam therapy to concentrate the effect of the beams on the tumor while minimizing damage to critical structures and other health tissues within the patient.

Plasma Confinement: Mathematical Modeling Of A Fusion Reactor, James Scott Jones Jan 2013

Plasma Confinement: Mathematical Modeling Of A Fusion Reactor, James Scott Jones

Theses Digitization Project

This study will discuss currently used power sources and their drawbacks, leading to covering fusion as an energy source and its potential. Fusion has three significant important advantages: Fuel reserves, safety, and environment. A significant amount of fuel reserves comes from the natural occurrence in ocean water of deuterium at a 1 to 6700 ratio, accounting for the energy supply being on the order of 2 billion years. Fusion does not produce any greenhouse gases and its only 'exhaust' is that of harmless inert helium.

Preweanling Exposure To Selective Catecholamine Transporter Inhibitors Differentially Effects Morphine-Induced Antinociception In Adulthood, Joseph Marco Valentine Jan 2013

Preweanling Exposure To Selective Catecholamine Transporter Inhibitors Differentially Effects Morphine-Induced Antinociception In Adulthood, Joseph Marco Valentine

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of this project is to determine how early methylphenidate exposure alters opioid receptor functioning in adulthood. To this end, we will administer selective monoamine transporter inhibitors for dopamine and norepinephrine (GBR-12904 and atomoxetine) during preweanling period and assess opioid function in adult rats by testing morphine-induced antinociception using the hot-plate and tail-flick tasks. In order to assess the effects of methylphenidate use on brain functions during development, investigations have been conducted in rats using ages roughly analogous to early and late childhood.

Biographies In Stone: Gravestone Iconography, Symbolism And Epitaphs In The American Southwest, Deborah Ann Cogan

Theses Digitization Project

This study incorporated a series of photographs taken on cemetery sites, census records, death cards, and epitaphs of the 18th and 19th centuries in the southeast. This data was then deciphered to reveal the possible biographies of the deceased individuals in Charleston, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia due to their rich abundance of 18th and 19th century cemeteries, public records, and historical societies. Can gravestone markers truly depict the whole sum of a person's life? Some gravestone markers exhibit an entire range of iconographic images, symbols, and epitaphs allowing the viewer to decipher information about the deceased.
