Getting Straight To The Point: A Bystander Training For College Students To Address Sexuality-And Gender-Specific Microaggressions In Schools, Caroline Signa

Theses and Dissertations

Research suggests that school climate is a critical component in a student’s sense of safety within a school and is the foundation for student-staff relationships. Despite this recognition, school staff demonstrate an insufficient intention to intervene on witnessed acts of gender- and sexuality-based inequity and grapple with discerning what these inequities look like (Kitzinger, 2005; Thapa et al., 2013). Some research has begun to target this gap in what intervention looks like, showing signs of positive effects on microaggression workshops increasing participant intention to intervene (Ackerman-Barger et al., 2021; Moors et al., 2022). I recruited 31 undergraduate students to participate …

I examine the current ESG evaluation systems in detail and find that there are many problems in applying the main international evaluation systems to …

The Impact Of Equity Incentive Executive Compensation On Corporate Performance, Bing Ruan Nov 2023

The Impact Of Equity Incentive Executive Compensation On Corporate Performance, Bing Ruan

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The management rights and ownership of modern enterprises are often separated. Enterprise owners, i.e. shareholders, pursue the maximization of enterprise profits, while enterprise managers pursue the maximization of their own interests. This leads to conflicts between the two parties in the process of pursuing the maximization of their respective interests. To address the inconsistency of interests in principal-agent relationships, effective corporate governance mechanisms are needed. The equity incentive system is one of the important means for modern enterprises to implement effective human capital management. Its purpose is to bind the personal interests of management with the interests of the enterprise, …

Empirical Nonlinear Site Response Applicable To Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Natalia Gomez Jaramillo Oct 2023

Empirical Nonlinear Site Response Applicable To Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Natalia Gomez Jaramillo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

In Greater Vancouver, strong earthquake shaking has not been recorded to quantify expected nonlinear soil response. Earthquake horizontal to vertical spectral ratios (eHVSR) are evaluated at seismic stations located at the edges or deeper center of sedimentary basins in Mexico City, the Kanto basin and Anchorage with available weak-to-strong motion recordings that have similar linear site response to Greater Vancouver to constrain the expected nonlinear soil response for future large earthquakes affecting Greater Vancouver. The empirical results confirm that the very low fundamental frequency (f0 < 0.6 Hz) at deep Fraser River delta sites will be less affected by strong shakings and suggest that for Fraser River delta edge sites the amplification at the predominant frequency (f1) could increase up to 1.77 times with a strong event. This thesis’ …

Analyzing Prominent Genes In Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (All), Shima Z. Omar

Honors College Theses

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is the most common type of childhood cancer. Leukemia is a type of cancer that involves the bone marrow and blood. This research study examined prominent genes in the disease. Two groups of genes, tumor suppressor and cell differentiation, were compared using statistical analysis to compare their binding potential and epigenetic potential. It is most likely that I failed to detect significant differences either because these genes’ function in the disease etiology is not strongly contexed to changes in expression, or that the magnitude of the differences were too slight to be detected with these methods. …

This study aimed to explore how University Liaisons respond to homelessness on their campus. With new federal and state laws being enacted, little research focuses on the policies, programs, and services at universities. Community Colleges tend to be a more attractive option for homeless youth due to the low cost; however, universities are also seeing an increase in the homeless student population, and more research is needed at the university level. The overarching research question is: How are universities' liaisons with state legislation responding to homelessness? This study used a comparative multiple-case study approach to explore how ULs respond to …

Effects Of A Major Hurricane On Dynamics, Structure, And Composition Of Mississippi River Delta Forests, Lance C. Umlang Oct 2023

Effects Of A Major Hurricane On Dynamics, Structure, And Composition Of Mississippi River Delta Forests, Lance C. Umlang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Tropical cyclones recurrently influence coastal forests worldwide. Tree survival (resistance) and post-cyclone recruitment (resilience) can vary with cyclone intensity, producing differences in composition, arboreal structure, and dynamics among affected forests. Studies of tropical cyclone wind effects on coastal forests typically emphasize damage more than post-cyclone responses. We hypothesized that intense cyclones might produce large, stratum-dependent effects that prevent affected forests from returning to pre-storm conditions. We explored direct effects of major Hurricane Katrina and post-hurricane changes in oak-dominated bottomland and cypress/tupelo-dominated swamp forests within the inactive portion of the Mississippi River deltaic plain. Overall mortality was high (14-25%) but concentrated …

Reading Rent: Interracial Relationships And Racial Hierarchies, Susanna A. Perez-Field

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In examining the musical Rent by Jonathan Larson (1995) and its film adaptation by Chris Columbus (2005), most scholarly work and analyses have focused on the work’s identity as a queer text. I assert that elements of this musical have been overlooked for its depth of racial and class hierarchies. Utilizing sociological theory and interracial relationships, I will examine characters and musical numbers to explore diversity and class positioning.

I will explore Rent for themes of racial, gender, and sexual identities and how they are presented through the friendships and romantic relationships of the eight principal characters (alphabetically): Angel, Benny, …

Deep Learning-Based Automatic Stereology For High- And Low-Magnification Images, Hunter Morera

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Quantification of the true number of stained cells in specific brain regions is an important metric in many fields of biomedical research involving cell degeneration, cytotoxicology, cellular inflammation, and drug development for a wide range of neurological disorders and mental illnesses. Unbiased stereology is the current state-of-the-art method for collecting the cell count data from tissue sections. These studies require trained experts to manually focus through a z-stack of microscopy images and count (click) on a hundred or more cells per case, making this approach time consuming (~1 hour per case) and prone to human error (i.e., inter-rater variability). Thus, …
