Exact Solutions Of Stochastic Burgers–Korteweg De Vries Type Equation With Variable Coefficients, Kolade Adjibi, Allan Martinez, Miguel Mascorro, Carlos Montes, Tamer Oraby, Rita Sandoval, Erwin Suazo
School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
We will present exact solutions for three variations of the stochastic Korteweg de Vries–Burgers (KdV–Burgers) equation featuring variable coefficients. In each variant, white noise exhibits spatial uniformity, and the three categories include additive, multiplicative, and advection noise. Across all cases, the coefficients are time-dependent functions. Our discovery indicates that solving certain deterministic counterparts of KdV–Burgers equations and composing the solution with a solution of stochastic differential equations leads to the exact solution of the stochastic Korteweg de Vries–Burgers (KdV–Burgers) equations.

Twisted Spatiotemporal Optical Vortex Beams In Dispersive Media, Milo W. Hyde Iv
Faculty Publications
We derive a closed-form expression for the mutual coherence function (MCF) of a twisted spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV) beam after propagating a distance in a linear dispersive medium. A twisted STOV beam is a partially coherent optical field that possesses a coherent STOV and a stochastic twist coupling its space and time dimensions. These beams belong to a special class of space–time-coupled light fields that carry transverse (to the direction of propagation) orbital angular momentum, making them potentially useful in numerous applications including quantum optics, optical manipulation, and optical communications. After presenting the derivation, we validate our new general MCF …

In an exploration of my own experience of being-in-the-world I produced five pieces of art which are meant to represent my relationships to my environment, with other beings, and the interplay between these interactions which constitute indeterminacy. Informed by readings of phenomenology, existentialism, and classic Chinese philosophy, specifically the Dao De Jing, I expressed my experience as a woman in the 21st century as I engaged in a constant reciprocity of viewing, watching, and self-surveilling. I expressed this experience through art because of art’s unique ability to parallel bodily experience in that it promotes the same exchange of power in …

OBJECTIVE: The ability to apply results from a study to a broader population remains a primary objective in translational science. Distinct from intrinsic elements of scientific rigor, the extrinsic concept of generalization requires there be alignment between a study cohort and population in which results are expected to be applied. Widespread efforts have been made to quantify representativeness of study cohorts. These techniques, however, often consider the study and target cohorts as monolithic collections that can be directly compared. Overlooking known impacts to health from socio-demographic and environmental factors tied to individual's geographical location, and potentially obfuscating misalignment in underrepresented …

We introduce an efficient variational hybrid quantum-classical algorithm designed for solving Caputo time-fractional partial differential equations. Our method employs an iterable cost function incorporating a linear combination of overlap history states. The proposed algorithm is not only efficient in terms of time complexity but also has lower memory costs compared to classical methods. Our results indicate that solution fidelity is insensitive to the fractional index and that gradient evaluation costs scale economically with the number of time steps. As a proof of concept, we apply our algorithm to solve a range of fractional partial differential equations commonly encountered in engineering …

Innate lymphocytes (ILCs) rapidly respond to and protect against invading pathogens and cancer. ILCs include natural killer (NK) cells, ILC1s, ILC2s, ILC3s, and lymphoid tissue inducer (LTi) cells and include type I, type II, and type III immune cells. While NK cells have been well recognized for their role in antiviral immunity, other ILC subtypes are emerging as players in antiviral defense. Each ILC subset has specialized functions that uniquely impact the antiviral immunity and health of the host depending on the tissue microenvironment. This review focuses on the specialized functions of each ILC subtype and their roles in antiviral …

This article explores ways pedagogical approaches in music librarianship and music theory can enhance each other. It emphasizes two broad benefits for students when library instruction is incorporated into music theory courses. First, what music librarians have to offer can be incredibly relevant to music theory instruction. Second, since music majors take music theory early in their degrees, library instruction in these courses allows them to get to know their librarians right away when they enter college. If music librarians provide further instruction and outreach in various ways throughout students' college years, students will be able to see that what …

The Decline And Transformation Of Smallholders In Chinese Agriculture: National Trends, Qian Forrest Zhang, Meiling Wu
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Using data from official statistical sources and a nationally representative survey, we find that since 2001, China’s agricultural labor force has declined by over 50 percent—a loss of over 200 million smallholders, probably the largest in human history. This trend is the most pronounced in livestock sectors: from 2012 to 2021, 62.5 million smallholder units have disappeared. The 150 million remaining smallholders are mostly commodity producers, participating widely in commodity relations to access agrochemicals, machinery, rental land, and wage labor to produce for markets. The ageing smallholder population also face challenges in intergenerational reproduction, which will accelerate its decline.

Efficient Neural Collaborative Search For Pickup And Delivery Problems, Detian Kong, Yining Ma, Zhiguang Cao, Tianshu Yu, Jianhua Xiao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we introduce Neural Collaborative Search (NCS), a novel learning-based framework for efficiently solving pickup and delivery problems (PDPs). NCS pioneers the collaboration between the latest prevalent neural construction and neural improvement models, establishing a collaborative framework where an improvement model iteratively refines solutions initiated by a construction model. Our NCS collaboratively trains the two models via reinforcement learning with an effective shared-critic mechanism. In addition, the construction model enhances the improvement model with high-quality initial solutions via curriculum learning, while the improvement model accelerates the convergence of the construction model through imitation learning. Besides the new framework …
Certified Quantization Strategy Synthesis For Neural Networks, Yedi Zhang, Guangke Chen, Jun Sun, Jun Sun
Certified Quantization Strategy Synthesis For Neural Networks, Yedi Zhang, Guangke Chen, Jun Sun, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Quantization plays an important role in deploying neural networks on embedded, real-time systems with limited computing and storage resources (e.g., edge devices). It significantly reduces the model storage cost and improves inference efficiency by using fewer bits to represent the parameters. However, it was recently shown that critical properties may be broken after quantization, such as robustness and backdoor-freeness. In this work, we introduce the first method for synthesizing quantization strategies that verifiably maintain desired properties after quantization, leveraging a key insight that quantization leads to a data distribution shift in each layer. We propose to compute the preimage for …

Decreasing Utilization Of Indwelling Urinary Catheters, Stacie Lomibao Fujimoto
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Increased utilization and prolonged dwell times of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are directly related to the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)- the fifth most common type of healthcare associated infection (HAI). The National Health and Safety Network (NHSN) uses the Standardized Utilization Ratio (SUR) metric to measure and compare device utilization in acute care hospitals across the nation. The national target SUR benchmark is 1.0, and a SUR under 1.0 indicates less device usage than NHSN predicts on an inpatient unit. In 2022 a Neuro Med-Surg unit experienced an overall SUR of 1.047 with 2 CAUTIs observed. A …

The ever-growing demand for improved energy efficiency in buildings has stimulated a stream of research focused on innovative retrofit energy solutions. Laminated low emissivity (Low-E) type coated glass components can be used in retrofitting window systems for enhancing energy savings provided by the insulating properties of glass laminates containing these heat-mirror-type coatings. In particular, custom-designed double-silver low-E coatings embedded into the laminate structure (directly facing the polymer interlayers during and after the lamination) are of interest due to being protected from environmental exposure, enabling easy component transportation, storage, and window retrofits. In this study, we provide some details on the …

The reliable quantification of microplastic contamination in chitinous organisms requires validated methods to remove interfering complex organic and inorganic material. This study trialled KOH, H2O2 and HNO3 digestion methods on the digestive tracts of two large decapods (Panulirus cygnus and Portunus armatus) to validate a protocol that facilitates reliable microplastic extraction. KOH digestion provided the best recovery (>95 %) of all polymers (e.g. polyamide, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polystyrene and polyvinyl chloride), with the lowest impact to their physical morphology and chemical spectra. While HNO3, and HNO3 + H2O2 treatments were more effective at digesting chitin, they …
