Mapping The Metadata Challenges In Libraries: A Systematic Review, Imran Ghaffar Sulehri, Nosheen Fatima Warraich Dr

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Background. In the information and knowledge world, libraries always played their important role and found as early adopters of new techniques and technologies for dissemination of information.

Purpose. If we understand the metadata as a researcher’s perspective, it is exploratory in its nature which provides guidance to the further data which is explanatory. There are many metadata challenges which affect the execution and accessibility of relevant data. These challenges must be recognized at one place so that LIS professionals having interest in metadata could be able to understand these challenges and hurdles concerning with libraries. So, this this study is …

Automatic Chain Cleaner, Daniel Cherenson, Rudy Lawler, Darius Rucker Dec 2020

Automatic Chain Cleaner, Daniel Cherenson, Rudy Lawler, Darius Rucker

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

The Automatic Chain Cleaner (ACC) is a battery-powered tool that clamps onto a bicycle frame and encloses the chain while cleaning it with brushes and degreaser and/or water. The batteries power a motor that drives the chain in the reverse direction from normal bicycle use. Clamps stabilize the tool and provide a consistent and stable cleaning job. This project aims to replace the manual versions of thistool which suffer from lack of stability and a poor user experience. Ease of use and reliability are important requirements for this project. The ACC will take 4 AA batteries and will run smoothly …

Collective Effort, Private Accumulation: Constructing The Luxembourg Investment Fund, 1956-2019, Samuel Weeks Dec 2020

Collective Effort, Private Accumulation: Constructing The Luxembourg Investment Fund, 1956-2019, Samuel Weeks

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

In this chapter, I address capital accumulation by means of analyzing one of this process’s most economically successful administrative vehicles: the Luxembourg investment fund – which hosts, at present, nearly $5 trillion in assets. In the 1950s, officials from foreign investment companies came looking for an ultra-low-tax domicile from which to sell their “products.” However, Luxembourg’s long-used H29 holding company – a structure designed to avoid double (or any) taxation on the assets of rich foreign clients – would not work on its own as a vehicle for investment funds. Thus, local attorneys began to alter the H29 in piecemeal …

Gender In The Time Of Covid-19: Evaluating National Leadership And Covid-19 Fatalities, Leah C. Windsor, Gina Yannitell Reinhardt, Alistair J. Windsor, Robert Ostergard, Susan Allen, Courtney Burns, Jarod Giger, Reed Wood

In this paper we explore whether countries led by women have fared better during the COVID-19 pandemic than those led by men. Media and public health officials have lauded the perceived gender-related influence on policies and strategies for reducing the deleterious effects of the pandemic. We examine this proposition by analyzing COVID-19-related deaths globally across countries led by men and women. While we find some limited support for lower reported fatality rates in countries led by women, they are not statistically significant. Country cultural values offer more substantive explanation for COVID-19 outcomes. We offer several potential explanations for the pervasive …

Inexact Tensor Methods And Their Application To Stochastic Convex Optimization, Artem Agafonov, Dmitry Kamzolov, Pavel Dvurechensky, Alexander Gasnikov, Martin Takac

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

We propose general non-accelerated and accelerated tensor methods under inexact information on the derivatives of the objective, analyze their convergence rate. Further, we provide conditions for the inexactness in each derivative that is sufficient for each algorithm to achieve a desired accuracy. As a corollary, we propose stochastic tensor methods for convex optimization and obtain sufficient mini-batch sizes for each derivative. © 2020, CC BY.

Low-Stakes Writing As A High-Impact Education Practice In Mba Classes, Adele Leon Dec 2020

Low-Stakes Writing As A High-Impact Education Practice In Mba Classes, Adele Leon

Communication, Media, and Arts Faculty Articles

Studies examining writing as a High-Impact Education Practice (HIP) have focused primarily on writing in terms of major project assignments, thus directing attention away from the promising high impacts that low-stakes writing (LSW) assignments have on student learning. This study piloted assigning LSW in two MBA classes to test the extent to which LSW assignments align with Anderson et al.'s (2016) study on high-impact writing assignments, and further, how accessible and beneficial LSW assignments are for non-WAC faculty and their curricula. Interview data from this study shows encouraging potential for WAC expansion and recruitment, and student survey data shows a …

Zoomprov. Improvisation Exercises For Language Learning In Online Classes With Zoom Or Similar Tech For Beginning And Intermediate Learners And Beyond, Mona Eikel-Pohen

Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship

The improv language exercises in this compilation are chosen from the experience I gathered 20 years ago, but also from the amazing work of Lauren Esposito and Scranton Improv & Comedy that have been more real than anything else to me this past summer, and from Jim Ansaldo, who taught me how to structure improv exercises online. They are organized by level, referring to the Common European Framework of References for Languages. That means, A1 exercises can be conducted at the beginners level but also at all other higher levels, but B2 exercises should not be imposed upon beginners or …

Safeguarding Curricular Self-Experiences In Undergraduate Music Therapy Education And Training, James Hiller, Courtney Belt, Susan Gardstrom, Joy Willenbrink-Conte Dec 2020

Safeguarding Curricular Self-Experiences In Undergraduate Music Therapy Education And Training, James Hiller, Courtney Belt, Susan Gardstrom, Joy Willenbrink-Conte

Music Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to put forth a model to support the psychological safety of undergraduate students as they engage in a form of experiential learning called self-experiences. Self-experiences pair active engagement in learning episodes with learner self-inquiry. The need to safeguard curricular self-experiences is grounded in the American Music Therapy Association’s Professional Competencies and Code of Ethics and the Certification Board for Music Therapists’ Board Certification Domains. We first explicate several types and benefits of self-experiences and identify potential risks and contraindications that may compromise learners’ psychological safety and even cause harm. Next, we describe …

Simple, Reliable Isolation, Purification And Cultivation Of Murine Skeletal Muscle Microvascular Endothelial Cells, Jianjie Wang, Joseph Harvey, Richard C. Garrad, Virginia H. Huxley, Laurie Erb, Gary Weisman Dec 2020

Simple, Reliable Isolation, Purification And Cultivation Of Murine Skeletal Muscle Microvascular Endothelial Cells, Jianjie Wang, Joseph Harvey, Richard C. Garrad, Virginia H. Huxley, Laurie Erb, Gary Weisman

College of Health and Human Services

Objectives: Microvascular dysfunction in skeletal muscle is involved in metabolic and vascular diseases. Microvascular endothelial cells (MEC) are poorly characterized in the progression of associated diseases in part due to lack of availability of MEC from various animal models. The objective was to provide a fast, simple, and efficient method to isolate murine MEC derived from skeletal muscle. Methods: Dissected abdominal skeletal muscles from C57BL/6J mice at 8 - 12 weeks of age were enzymatically dissociated. MEC were isolated using a modified two-step Dynabeads™-based purification method. With a combination of Dynabeads™ - Griffonia simplicifolia lectin-I and Dynabeads™ - monoclonal antibody …
