Suicide In The Las Vegas Homeless Population: Applying Durkheim's Theory Of Suicide, Joseph Dean Diaz Jan 1999

Suicide In The Las Vegas Homeless Population: Applying Durkheim's Theory Of Suicide, Joseph Dean Diaz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study is an empirical test of Durkheim's theory of suicide. Durkheim's 1897 theory holds that suicide is caused not by environmental or physiological forces, but by social forces, which either push to the individual to take his or her own life, or fail to prevent suicidal behavior; The population from which the data were gathered for this study was the Las Vegas homeless population. The lack of social bonds and social integration, which Durkheim found to be related to suicide, are generally present in homeless persons. Therefore, it was suspected that factors which contribute to homelessness would be positively …

Qos-Based Multipath Routing For The Internet, Bing Chen Jan 1999

Qos-Based Multipath Routing For The Internet, Bing Chen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The new generation of network services is being developed for incorporation in communication infrastructure. These services, generally called Quality of Services (QoS), should accommodate data file, video, and audio applications. The different performance requirements of these applications necessitate a re-examination of the main architectural components of today's networks, which were designed to support traditional data applications. Routing, which determines the sequence of network nodes a packet traverses between source and destination, is one such component. Here, we examine the potential routing problems in future Internet and discuss the advantages of class-based multi-path routing methods. The result is a new approach …

Exploring The Role Of Service Process And Its Effect On Guest Encounter Satisfaction, Karl Joseph Mayer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The dissertation empirically investigates the area of service process using a hospitality research setting. The concept of process has previously been identified as a key element in the marketing of services. However, the area of process design has had a reduced status in services, with the result that detailed service planning remains an unexplored research area. Similarly, no empirical research appears to have been conducted that defines the dimensions of the service delivery process. This study addresses that gap by developing a general model that identifies the key dimensions of service process. The model proposes that service process can be …

A Political -Economic View Of The Federal Organization Of Work, Rose Marie Richardson Jan 1999

A Political -Economic View Of The Federal Organization Of Work, Rose Marie Richardson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Using a comparative historical review of changes in the organization of work, this study analyzes the changing organization of federal work in relation to the organization of work in the private sector. Following a break in 1883 with the simple control wielded by political appointees running federal agencies, federal work became more tightly controlled through a greater bureaucratic organization of government work. However, a continuing influence of private work practices on federal work, such as the incorporation of the principles of scientific management, suggests not only a relationship between private and federal work practices but one that is stronger than …

The Structural Dimensions Of Community-Oriented Police Departments, Stavros S Anthony Jan 1999

The Structural Dimensions Of Community-Oriented Police Departments, Stavros S Anthony

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

With the beginning of the twentieth century, police departments throughout the nation, during what has been called the reform movement, changed their organizational structure to that of a bureaucracy. This structural change occurred to deal with the problems of political patronage and corruption in police departments. The result, over time, was the development of municipal police departments into ridged, formalized, and centralized structures that were not responsive to the communities they served. Police officers became professional crime-fighters, who sought little community input; For the past 20 years, pressures from police professionals, local communities and governmental forces have caused police executives …

Dynamic Element Matching Techniques For Data Converters, Jerry Wayne Bruce Jan 1999

Dynamic Element Matching Techniques For Data Converters, Jerry Wayne Bruce

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Analog to digital converter (ADC) circuit component errors create nonuniform quantization code widths and create harmonic distortion in an ADC's output. In this dissertation, two techniques for estimating an ADC's output spectrum from the ADC's transfer function are determined. These methods are compared to a symmetric power function and asymmetric power function approximations. Standard ADC performance metrics, such as SDR, SNDR, SNR, and SFDR, are also determined as a function of the ADC's transfer function approximations. New dynamic element matching (DEM) flash ADCs are developed. An analysis of these DEM flash ADCs is developed and shows that these DEM algorithms …

The Art Of Truth: The Architecture Of 19th -Century American Allegory, Gary Brian Bennett Jan 1999

The Art Of Truth: The Architecture Of 19th -Century American Allegory, Gary Brian Bennett

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The current study, in its broadest scope, explores the nature of literary art primarily as a moral experience. Specifically, it addresses ironic allegory---a genre of fiction born during the American Renaissance of the mid-nineteenth century. As an amalgam of two other oblique genres, Gothic fiction and Puritan allegory, ironic allegory was originally the product of Nathaniel Hawthorne's moral imagination and tragic sensibility; consequently, its primary themes are the properties of time, the problems of tragedy, the process of transformation, and the preeminence of truth. Focusing exclusively on the architectural metaphors in Cooper's Templeton trilogy, Hawthorne's The House of the Seven …

Think Different: A Comparison Of The Critical Thinking Abilities Of Education Majors, Shelly Weeks Channel Jan 1999

Think Different: A Comparison Of The Critical Thinking Abilities Of Education Majors, Shelly Weeks Channel

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In an increasingly complex society, the need for people to exercise critical thinking effectively is clearly evident. The institution of education recognizes that its responsibility to teach students to think critically is vital in order for them to negotiate decisions humanely and intelligently in an ever-changing world; Hundreds of reports from various committees and researchers along with such insidious incidents as the rise in murderous assaults on children inside school buildings, such as the massacre in Littleton, Colorado, attest to the fact that schools fail to teach students to evaluate social life critically. While educators advocate critical thinking, teacher education …

The Impact Of Interracial Contact On Stereotypical Perceptions, Joann Watts Debose Jan 1999

The Impact Of Interracial Contact On Stereotypical Perceptions, Joann Watts Debose

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Situations involving interracial contact and their impact on the reduction of racist attitudes among whites in America will be examined using the contact theory of prejudice. This perspective maintains that evidence for the continued "social distance" between blacks and whites can be quantified in measures of workplace contact. Racial perceptions in schools, churches and neighborhoods provide additional evidence for the contact theory of race relations. Stereotypic perceptions develop when people are unable or unwilling to obtain all the information needed to make accurate judgments about people or situations. Often, the absence of the "total picture" encourages people to fill in …
