School nurses provide a vast number of health services for students, teachers, and staff. Despite school nurses' important contributions to the health status of students, through the years their positions have been gradually supplemented by Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP)/ Health Clerks. With the number of UAPs increasing in the school setting, roles and responsibilities of school nurses and UAPs need to be clearly differentiated in order to utilize the UAP's services legally and efficiently. This research used a descriptive survey to investigate the perceptions that differentiate the role of school nurses and UAPs among school administrators, nurses, UAPs, secretaries, and …

Information System Incidents: The Development Of A Damage Assessment Model, Mark D. Horony Dec 1999

Information System Incidents: The Development Of A Damage Assessment Model, Mark D. Horony

Theses and Dissertations

Information system (IS) incidents are on the rise. With low manning and undertrained information security specialists it is difficult for organizations to stop IS incidents from occurring. Once an incident has occurred it is the IS manager's responsibility to ensure that a full and accurate damage assessment has been accomplished. However, most IS managers lack the necessary tools to assess the damage from an incident. This exploratory thesis developed an IS incident damage assessment model (DAM) that can be part of the IS manager's tool kit. During the development of the model, it became apparent that the model was supported …

I evaluated the adequacy of different electrofishing approaches for estimating species richness in small Ridge and Valley streams. My study objectives were to determine the effects of the sampling season, reach length, habitat sequences surveyed, and sampling intensity on estimates of fish species richness. Fish assemblages were sampled at 18 sites across five streams in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area, May-June (spring) and July-August (summer) 1998. Reach lengths ranged from 103 to 278 m (30 to 61 times the mean stream width [MSW]). At each site, fish were collected using one or two backpack electrofishers within habitat-specific enclosures (riflle-run or pool). …

A Numerical Simulation Of A Carbon Black Suspension Cell Via A Time-Reversed, Double Layer Compute Algorithm, Gregg T. Anderson Dec 1999

A Numerical Simulation Of A Carbon Black Suspension Cell Via A Time-Reversed, Double Layer Compute Algorithm, Gregg T. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

A numerical simulation of a carbon black suspension cell is explored which models a laser-induced plasma within a liquid ethanol medium of approximately 1 mm thickness. The simulation model assumes a laser pulse with a pulse width of approximately 9 nsecs propagating in the left-to-right direction striking the front surface of the medium and focusing to a spot within the liquid volume. When the energy density within a given irradiated volume is sufficiently high, it ignites the carbon particles and generates a large number of free electrons, i.e., a plasma. The plasma couples with the in-coming laser energy on a …

Impact Of Actual Facilitator Alignment, Co-Location, And Video Intervention On The Efficacy Of Distributed Group Support Systems, Brian J. Heberlie, Mary O. Tolbert

Theses and Dissertations

The growth of distributed group support systems (GSS) suggests that organizations will continue to bring dispersed groups of people together to make decisions over computer networks. In many instances those groups are temporarily assembled to address a task and then summarily disbanded never to work together again. In order for users to effectively use the GSS issues of trust and control need to be addressed within the GSS design. Users have perceptions about the fairness of structural and social determinants of the GSS design. These perceptions influence both the decision making process and process outcomes. This article shows the negative …

Application Of The Interaction Picture To Reactive Scattering In One Dimension, Michael J. Maclachlan Dec 1999

Application Of The Interaction Picture To Reactive Scattering In One Dimension, Michael J. Maclachlan

Theses and Dissertations

The interaction picture is used together with the channel-packet method in a new time-dependent approach to compute reactive scattering matrix elements. The channelpacket method enables the use of the interaction picture for computing reactive S-matrix elements by splitting the computational effort into two parts. First, asymptotic reactant and product wavepackets are individually propagated into the interaction region of the potential to form Moller states. The interaction picture, in contrast to the usual Schrödinger picture of quantum mechanics, is so constructed that a wavefunction that experiences no change in potential (that is, a free-particle wavefunction) remains always fixed, with no translation …

An Uncertain Shepard : Ideology And Doctrine Of The Protestant Episcopal Church In The Confederate States, 1861-1865, Walter Forrest Bailey Dec 1999

An Uncertain Shepard : Ideology And Doctrine Of The Protestant Episcopal Church In The Confederate States, 1861-1865, Walter Forrest Bailey

Masters Theses

This thesis is an intellectual history that examines how the ideology of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States evolved during the years of the Civil War 1861-1865. Previous to this study, most historians who have studied this church have either provided little examination of the responses of its doctrine and ideology to the pressures imposed by the war or characterized its clergy as monolithically evangelical. In the latter portrayal, an evangelical church supposedly attempted to merge church and state behind a millennialist effort to convert the Confederacy into the earthly realization of God's kingdom on earth. Although this …

Cell Localization Of Southern Bean Mosaic Virus Proteins In Cowpea, Benjamin Calhoun Fowler Dec 1999

Cell Localization Of Southern Bean Mosaic Virus Proteins In Cowpea, Benjamin Calhoun Fowler

Masters Theses

The southern bean mosaic virus (SBMV), the type member of the sobemovirus genus, is a positive sense icosohedral plant virus that systemically infects cowpea. Recently, it was determined that the p21 (ORF1) protein, p24 (ORF3) protein, and the CP were required for cell-to-cell movement of SBMV-C in cowpea. It is possible that these proteins are viral movement proteins, that is, they provide some function in viral movement. The goal of this study was to determine the subcellular localization of these three viral proteins and begin to elucidate their roles in cell-to-cell and/or long distance movement. Previously, the movement characteristics of …

Random Walk Population Sizing As A Model Of Decision Making In A Deceptive Schema Partition, Bill Clyde White Dec 1999

Random Walk Population Sizing As A Model Of Decision Making In A Deceptive Schema Partition, Bill Clyde White

Masters Theses

Population-sizing models have been shown to be accurate predictors of genetic algorithm convergence. The random walk model incorporates and improves upon previous work in population sizing. This research investigates the ability of the random walk model to predict the underlying genetic mechanisms of schema processing. These mechanisms are evaluated by examining the decisions a genetic algorithm makes in deceptive schema partitions. Results of this research indicate that the random walk model is an accurate predictor of schema partition processing in deceptive partitions. Visualization of the ongoing competition among the schemata in a partition as vertices of a hypercube confirm the …

Use Of Second Formant Transition And Relative Amplitude Cues In Labeling Nasal Place Of Articulation, Susan Lynn Frisbee Dec 1999

Use Of Second Formant Transition And Relative Amplitude Cues In Labeling Nasal Place Of Articulation, Susan Lynn Frisbee

Masters Theses

Previous studies have shown that manipulation of the amplitude of a particular frequency region of the consonantal portion of a syllable relative to the amplitude of the same frequency region in an adjacent vowel influences the perception of place of articulation. This manipulation has been called the relative amplitude cue. The earlier studies examined the effect of the relative amplitude manipulation upon labeling place of articulation for fricatives and stop consonants. This current study looked at the influences of this manipulation upon labeling place of articulation for the /m/ - /n/ nasal distinction. Twenty-five listeners with normal hearing labeled nasal …

Geology Of The Northwestern South Mountains Near Morganton, North Carolina, Scott D. Giorgis Dec 1999

Geology Of The Northwestern South Mountains Near Morganton, North Carolina, Scott D. Giorgis

Masters Theses

Detailed mapping in the South Mountains has revealed a structurally complex sequence of high-grade gneisses with a mappable stratigraphy. The Walker Top gneiss has an igneous origin and was originally mapped in 1988 by Goldsmith et. al. as a less deformed version of the Henderson Gneiss. Geochemical and petrologic data support the conclusion that the Henderson Gneiss and Walker Top gneiss are genetically related. Contact relationships and field observations are consistent with the interpretation of the Walker Top gneiss as a pluton or as a depositional platform for the overlying metasedimentary units (i.e., a basement unit). Metamorphic data and geochronologic …

Synthesis Of Novel Bifunctional Polymers For Selective Metal Ion Complexation, Minjeong Hong

Masters Theses

Polymer supported reagents were synthesized by functionalization of polymer supports for the purpose of selective metal ion separation. Three categories of polymer supports with different microenvironments were prepared. Vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) crosslinked with 2% divinylbenzene was copolymerized with either methyl methacrylate (MMA) to give a polar environment or styrene (STY) to give a hydrophobic environment. Different oligo ethyleneimines and phosphonic acid were used as ligands in the synthesis of monofunctional resins. Bifunctional aminophosphonic acid resins were prepared by phosphorylation of ethyleneimine ligands. The characterization of the resins shows that as the length of the ethyleneimine ligand increases, more crosslinking takes …

Unification Of Place And Technology : A Regional Airport In West Virginia, Matthew J. Lerfald Dec 1999

Unification Of Place And Technology : A Regional Airport In West Virginia, Matthew J. Lerfald

Masters Theses

Today, the world is in a rapid continuum of advancement and change, where universalization, deterioration of the environment, and a breakup of cultural and individual differences have become the norm. Within this environment local cultures have all but disappeared, and the context of one place looks much like everywhere else. This has brought about a loss of meaning, a separation from our past, and a lack of quality and importance in the way we view our regions. The built environment has suffered greatly within this continuum and has yielded to this loss of meaning and quality into a state of …
