Detection Of Glial Interleukin-6 Release: Development Of A Novel Interleukin-6 Elisa, Kay-Lynn Bowman
Detection Of Glial Interleukin-6 Release: Development Of A Novel Interleukin-6 Elisa, Kay-Lynn Bowman
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The development of an interleukin-6 (IL-6) enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) assay resulted in a detection range of 1 ng/m1 to 10 ng/mL IL-6. The limit of detection (LOD) for IL-6 was 0.25 ng/mL. Troubleshooting techniques were attempted including matrix effects, non-specific binding, and coating buffer pH differences. In comparison to the ELISA, the LOD for IL-6 using the 7TD1 bioassay was 2--5 pg/mL. Therefore the 7TD1 bioassay was implemented for the experiments described in this study. IL-6 is a cytokine known to stimulate B-cell differentiation and to activate T-cells. IL-6 is elevated in inflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases. Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) stimulates IL-6 …
The Canons Of Television: An Application Of The Five Canons Of Classical Rhetoric To Television Program Development, Jamey Todd Combs
The Canons Of Television: An Application Of The Five Canons Of Classical Rhetoric To Television Program Development, Jamey Todd Combs
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study constructs a methodology of television program development based on the five canons of classical rhetoric. Ronald Primeau (1979) first introduced the canons to the electronic media. His book uses the canons as a guide to television viewing. He argues that by understanding the television industry, an audience can better enjoy the medium. Expanding from Primeau's work, this study creates a method of program development based on the canons and uses the process to design a synopsis for a new television series.
Educator Study Groups: An Exploration Of An Alternative Method Of Preservice Teacher Development, Leah Mary Herner
Educator Study Groups: An Exploration Of An Alternative Method Of Preservice Teacher Development, Leah Mary Herner
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study was conducted to investigate the effect study groups have on preservice teacher education. The participants were enrolled in ESP 444, The Special Education Student in the General Education Classroom. The study took place during a 9-week period; Forty-two students participated in this study. The study involved placing the students randomly into two groups. The lecture group received lectures from graduate students in special education. The study group worked together in groups to research and discuss inclusion of students with disabilities. All students took a knowledge-based pretest and attitude survey prior to beginning the study. All students took a …
Facilitating Social Development With Play Groups In Early Childhood Settings, Janet Avery Butz
Facilitating Social Development With Play Groups In Early Childhood Settings, Janet Avery Butz
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This study investigated the efficacy of using facilitated and nonfacilitated play groups as an intervention for facilitating the social interactive behaviors of young children with and without disabilities. Sixteen students aged four to five years from a community-based preschool on a university campus participated in the study. The facilitated play group was assigned a facilitator who was trained to encourage the social and play interactions among the children using the guided participation strategies adapted from the Integrated Play Groups Resource Manual (Wolfberg & Schuler, 1992). The nonfacilitated play group was assigned the same adult-whose only role was to monitor the …
The Stages Of Development In The Portrayal Of African-Americans In Television Comedy, Rashawnda Deve Horn
The Stages Of Development In The Portrayal Of African-Americans In Television Comedy, Rashawnda Deve Horn
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This thesis involves a historical and critical examination of the utilization and development of African Americans in television sitcoms. By reexamining the initial research by Riggs (1991) and extending it, I will introduce a new stage focusing on contemporary sitcoms; According to Riggs' (1991), study on the utilization and development of African Americans in television can be divided into four stages that represent various periods in television history. Each stage is indicated by the transition in role, increase or decline in visibility, and the changes in their image or portrayal on television. By furthering Riggs study by examining contemporary sitcoms …
