China's Rise And The Confucius Institutes: Chinese And American Perspectives, Shryll Whittaker 2013 Seton Hall University

China's Rise And The Confucius Institutes: Chinese And American Perspectives, Shryll Whittaker

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The Confucius Institutes are Chinese government-backed nonprofit organizations that promote Chinese language and culture. They are housed on collegiate campuses and designed to complement Chinese language and cultural studies by providing teachers, curriculums, textbooks and other educational materials. Their establishment has been a source of controversy, especially in the United States, due to the institutes’ close ties with and the financial, administrative, and political support they receive from the Chinese government. Critics have had two primary concerns: that the Confucius Institutes provide the Chinese government access to increase soft power by issuing propaganda and that their presence on American collegiate …

A Canyon Apart: Immigration Politics And Ethnic Identity In Arizona, Peter Morrissey FCRH '11 2013 Fordham University

A Canyon Apart: Immigration Politics And Ethnic Identity In Arizona, Peter Morrissey Fcrh '11

The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal

This article examines the political and social forces surrounding the April 23, 2010 passage of Arizona’s stringent immigration enforcement measure, Senate Bill (S.B.) 1070, which empowered local law enforcement to demand proof of legal residency from any person suspected of being undocumented. A person’s failure to produce documentation would result in arrest, detention, investigation, and potentially deportation to his or her nation of origin. Through the law’s lens, the article explores the development of the social tension that followed Arizona’s explosive population growth, and examines how Arizona’s large Hispanic population has been unable to assert itself at the ballot box …

The Danger Of Pressing Iran, Gabriel C. Lajeunesse

Gabriel C. Lajeunesse

Overplaying our hand with Iran--either by piling on tough actions or by too rapid movement toward rapprochement--will play into the hand of hard liners and may cause President Rouhani’s efforts toward a negotiated settlement to fail.

The United Nations And The Magna Carta For Children, Winston E. Langley 2013 University of Massachusetts Boston

The United Nations And The Magna Carta For Children, Winston E. Langley

Winston E. Langley

The impulse that invited the preparation of this book is one which is linked to the convergence of a number of factors bearing on my interest in human rights. First, the brutality visited on children during World War II has had an abiding negative effect on my sense of what is possible in human conduct. Second, I am persuaded that children are not simply the means by which human societies are continued, but, as well, the potential source of moral revitalization and transformation for those societies. Third, I recognize that the human rights movement, which followed World War II, holds …

The Plight Of Kenyan Domestic Workers In Gulf Countries, Caroline Muthoni Gikuru 2013 University of San Francisco

The Plight Of Kenyan Domestic Workers In Gulf Countries, Caroline Muthoni Gikuru

Master's Theses

Kenya’s economy remains the regional leader within the East African Community (EAC) and among East African countries at large. However, political instability such as the 2007 post-election violence and the region’s social and political instability trickling into Kenya, have negatively affected the country’s economic growth. To bridge the economic gap, Kenyan women are seeking employment in the domestic service sector in the Gulf Countries, with Saudi Arabia being the most popular destination. At their destination countries, some domestic workers are subjected to various forms of abuse by their employers, leaving the worker without recourse due to the lack of legal …

The Lion & The Ringmaster: Croatia's Accession To The European Union, Jelena N. Bilandzich 2013 University of San Francisco

The Lion & The Ringmaster: Croatia's Accession To The European Union, Jelena N. Bilandzich

Master's Theses

July 1, 2013 marked Croatia's official induction into the European Union. For Croatia this was the culmination of a long negotiation process filled with concessions and challenges. This situation inspired the question of how Croatia's alliance with the EU has affected the state? In order to analyze this relationship the aspects of Croatian identity and sovereignty were explored, in addition to the EU's principles and problems regarding member and candidate states. The evidence found within this investigation came from a number of literary sources ranging from the academic to official government documents. Furthermore, nine interviews were conducted within Croatia, which …

Reading Between The Lines, Conor P. Brooks

SURGE

“Why do so many people come to our country? They come here and they take pictures, and then they go home and use them to show that we are a terrible place. Why do you do this?”

This question was posed to me by a sixteen-year old boy in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti while I was visiting his school on a post-earthquake relief trip in 2012. [excerpt]

The American Politics Of A Jewish Judea And Samaria, Rebekah Israel 2013 Florida International University

The American Politics Of A Jewish Judea And Samaria, Rebekah Israel

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation poses a set of six questions about one of the Israel Lobby’s particular components, a Potential Christian Jewish coalition (PCJc) within American politics that advocates for Israeli sovereignty over “Judea and Samaria” (“the West Bank”). The study addresses: the profiles of the individuals of the PCJc; its policy positions, the issues that have divided it, and what has prevented, and continues to prevent, the coalition from being absorbed into one or more of the more formally organized components of the Israel Lobby; the resources and methods this coalition has used to attempt to influence U.S. policy on (a) …

Relationship Of Convenience? The Diplomatic Interplay Between The Commonwealth Games Federation And The Commonwealth Games Host City, Caitlin Byrne 2013 Bond University

Relationship Of Convenience? The Diplomatic Interplay Between The Commonwealth Games Federation And The Commonwealth Games Host City, Caitlin Byrne

Caitlin Byrne

This paper analyses the diplomatic dynamics that define and underpin the relationship between the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and the Commonwealth Games host city. For the host city, the Commonwealth Games holds out the promise of global visibility, urban regeneration, improved economic activity and social cohesion. For the CGF, the appeal of the host city can improve athlete participation in the event, enhance the appeal and longevity of the sports involved and strengthen the sustainability of the sporting institution itself. The relationship is thus one of mutual convenience through which both actors seek to leverage the global appeal of the …

The Semantics Of Cyber Warfare 网络战的语义, Jason Fritz 2013 Bond University

The Semantics Of Cyber Warfare 网络战的语义, Jason Fritz

Jason Fritz

The study of cyber warfare in China suffers from the same excess of overlapping terminology as English documents. This paper will analyze key cyber warfare terms from authoritative sources and show that all of them can be broken down into three fundamental branches that are common to both the People’s Republic of China and the United States of America. The three branches are: Information Operations, Computer Network Operations, and Net Centric Warfare. Streamlined categorizing can aid the efficiency of research and improve inter-agency structure. Additional benefits include more accurate threat assessment, limiting media and public misunderstanding, and increasing transparency to …

How China Will Use Cyber Warfare To Leapfrog In Military Competitiveness, Jason Fritz 2013 Selected Works

How China Will Use Cyber Warfare To Leapfrog In Military Competitiveness, Jason Fritz

Jason Fritz

Extract:The People’s Republic of China (PRC) may be a global power economically but its military lacks force projection beyond the Asia Pacific region. Its traditional military hardware is one to three generations behind the US and Russia. In light of these deficiencies it is probable that cyber warfare will provide China with an asymmetric advantage to deter aggression from stronger military powers as they catch up in traditional military capabilities. Cyber warfare would also allow China to leapfrog by means of technology transfer and exploiting adversary weaknesses. This investigation will address three primary questions: What is China’s current military capability? …

Satellite Hacking: A Guide For The Perplexed, Jason Fritz 2013 Selected Works

Satellite Hacking: A Guide For The Perplexed, Jason Fritz

Jason Fritz

Extract: A significant disruption to satellite services would have damaging effects on society. However, news headlines of satellites being hacked, such as those stemming from the 2011 Report to Congress of the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, degrade discussion in international relations by oversimplifying the topic. Limiting the information given might be due to security concerns or a lack of attention span on the part of its intended audience; however oversimplification gives the impression that an individual hacker sitting at their computer can access satellites with a few simple keystrokes. Conversely, it might lead others to dismiss the topic …

Defining Scavenger-Actors: Understanding A Global Menace, James Harrold 2013 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Defining Scavenger-Actors: Understanding A Global Menace, James Harrold

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This article introduces a new international actor, the 'scavenger-actor', as a replacement for warlords and pirate gangs. The article first reviews literature on both piracy and warlordism in historical and modern contexts in order to provide a basis for its argument of a new definitional term encompassing both groups. A negative binomial regression model is then applied to data on pirate attacks and measurements of state health to show that piracy is as closely tied to state failure as is warlordism. Finally, the article presents its argument for the new term, 'scavenger-actor', as a needed reform to political science discourse, …

Discerning For Peace In Africa: The Sudan Civil Wars And Peace Processes 1955-2013, Conrad John Masabo Mr. 2013 Dar es Salaam University College of Education

Discerning For Peace In Africa: The Sudan Civil Wars And Peace Processes 1955-2013, Conrad John Masabo Mr.

Conrad John Masabo Mr.

Separation of the Sudan into the Republic of Sudan (North) and the Republic of Southern Sudan (South) was globally extolled as the long-lasting solution to one of the longest civil wars in post-Colonial Africa. However, recent developments in Sudan: continued clashes between north and south, crises in the contested areas and tribal civil wars have uncovered that: separation without addressing the principal root causes of the conflicts is not the panacea to prone and protracted civil wars. Taking a historical analysis framework, the paper attempts to tackle issues of causes, opportunities and challenges for peace in Sudan.

A Tangled Hope: America, China, And Human Rights At The End Of The Cold War, 1976-2000, Jared Michael Phillips

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A Tangled Hope: America, China, and Human Rights at the End of the Cold War, 1976-2000, discusses the evolution of both the international and American understanding of human rights. Beginning with a discussion of the philosophical and cultural frameworks concerning "rights" that developed in Europe and the Americas throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, this work moves into the post-World War II climate that shaped Jimmy Carter and his unique understanding of human rights and America's role in the Cold War world. In particular, I argue that the existing narrative concerning Carter's foreign policy is lacking in a nuanced understanding …
