ighlights of Activities: After a very intensive recruitment program where GTU members visited Geography classes and explained the importance of GTU membership, the ZETA XI Chapter initiated six new members. The first activity of the year included a presentation by Dr. Lawrence Hoffman on his summer trip through China and the U.S.S.R. At a reception afterward, both students and faculty were able to discuss Dr. Hoffman's travels with him. In December GTU members attended the traditional Departmental Christmas Party.

Geography programs have been reviewed regarding the value, nature, purpose, and utility of the discipline. Some geography departments have been terminated, such as the one at the University of Michigan (Kish & Ward, 1981). Skeptics of geography, moreover, point to the great range of problems, such as the identity of geography and the role it plays in education, which have plagued the discipline. Catastrophic Michigan Tornadoes, 1950-1984, George M. Howe, Carl F. Ojala

During the 35-year period from 1950 through 1984, 520 tornadoes were reported and confirmed in Michigan. Slightly less than one quarter of them killed a total of 234 people, injured 3,102, and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage.' A violent tornado in Genesee County on June 8,1953, widely referred to since then as "The Flint Tornado," was responsible for 116 deaths, the greatest number of deaths by a single tornado in the entire United States that year. A fundamental technique to convey quantitative information on maps is use of symbols.' Four of the most common symbols for this purpose are circle sectors, bar segments, graduated squares and graduated circles . 2 The ability of these four symbols to communicate accurate information to map readers has been the subject of research by those interested in the cognitive process. The purpose of the research reported here was to compare these four symbols in terms of how accurately they were perceived by test subjects. Adult Foster Care is needed throughout the nation yet these structural uses often meet with community opposition. Students and teachers of Physical Geography and Climatology often find that a great deal of repetitive practice is required for one to develop the skill to identify a given climate type when presented with monthly temperature and precipitation data (e.g., Fig. 1). Ideally, when observing standard climatic data, the student will have acquired some ability to locate a station in its proper hemisphere and locate it in a reasonably logical location. The danger comes from the waste products produced by generating electricity and the nuclear fuel cycle. Urban Beavers At The Crossroads: How Ecological Knowledge, Sociodemographic, And Spatial Context Shape Public Perception And Coexistence Preferences, Matthew Guziejka

Urban beavers demonstrate synurbization by adapting to urban environments, offering ecological benefits such as biodiversity enhancement and flood mitigation, while also occasionally conflicting with infrastructure. This study examines how ecological knowledge, sociodemographics, and spatial context influence public perceptions and management preferences for urban beavers in the Tualatin River watershed, Oregon.

A voluntary survey of 176 participants from peri-urban areas assessed demographic characteristics, ecological knowledge, and attitudes toward management approaches. Spatial factors, such as proximity to watercourses and green spaces, were also analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were used to explore relationships between these factors and management preferences. Political orientation was significantly …
