The Shifting Landscape Of Amish Agriculture: Balancing Tradition And Innovation In An Organic Farming Cooperative, Matthew J. Mariola, David L. Mcconnell
All Faculty Articles
In the context of the recent proliferation of alternative operations and marketing schemes across the agricultural landscape, this article examines an Amish organic farming cooperative in northeast Ohio. Contrary to popular perception, the large majority of Amish are not full-time farmers, and those who do farm typically use conventional, chemical-intensive methods. The adoption of certified organic among the Amish is a pragmatic decision that stems from concerns over the sociocultural effects of losing their agrarian heritage, but it also raises challenges that require a careful balance between market imperatives and cultural traditions. We investigate these challenges and the Amish response …

The Conundrum Of Developing Country`S Heritage Tourism: How Tourism Destroys What It Tries To Preserve, Jessica Meado
Senior Theses - Anthropology
Organizations like United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, have joined with more than a hundred nations in order to develop sustainable preservation techniques for World Heritage Sites, thereby, allowing for a sites continued appreciation for future generations throughout the world. Heritage tourism purports to allow nations to benefit economically from investing in heritage sites as their continued preservation will increase tourist`s cultural motivation to travel to the country, resulting in increased cash flow into the country. However, as more and more tourists visit a location the more wear and tear is put on the site, thereby negatively effecting …

Reconciling stewardship and recreational access to public lands is particularly problematic at sites of archaeological and spiritual significance. This poster details the development of a methodology to assess the interpretation of vulnerable archaeological resources on public lands. Using case studies of five existing visitors centers/interpretive areas in the American West, this research uses qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate different strategies for interpreting landscape, environment, and culture to the visiting public. Case studies include Bandolier National Monument, Mesa Verde National Park, Petroglyph National Monument, Ute Mountain Tribal Park, and Grimes Point Archaeological Site. Areas of investigation include visitorship and visitor …

Immigration And Farm Labor In The U.S., Philip Martin, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Hired workers comprise 33 percent of people employed on farms but do an estimated 60 percent of the work performed on U.S. farms. Most hired farm workers were born abroad, usually in Mexico, and most are believed not to be authorized to work in the U.S. Changes in Mexico-US migration flows and more restrictive immigration laws and policies have increased the vulnerability of U.S. agriculture to labor supply shocks, which could increase costs and threaten the ability of some farmers to harvest laborintensive crops. Congress is considering major changes in immigration policies. Farm employers want access to a reliable supply …

Salva La Iglesia: Intercultural Capital And The Struggle For Community In A Small Town Congregation, Maria E. Schwarz
Senior Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine community response to crisis and the impact of intercultural interactions on the outcome of ethnic and religious group conflict. I seek to expand the traditional theoretical lens of forms of capital (Bourdieu, 1986) to include a new way of examining group interactions as they relate to intercultural capital. I use a case study focusing on the San Martín Catholic Mission in western Oregon and the ways this particular community responded to the crisis of the Catholic diocese threatening to sell their property in 2010. I gathered data from a year of ethnographic …

The Levi Jordan plantation house is one of the few antebellum plantation structures to have survived in Brazoria County. It is the only standing structure associated with the plantation, which began operating in 1848 and was occupied continually up through the 1990s. The original house, built in the early 1850s using slave labor, was a 20x60-ft two-story wooden frame structure. It was altered many times during its long occupation, often due to hurricane damage. A portion of the Levi Jordan Plantation was acquired by the State of Texas in 2002 and managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department until …

The Emergence Of The Brics – Implications For Global Governance, Sotiris Petropoulos Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
The global financial crisis of 2008, with its detrimental effects on the global economy, was the starting point of a transformation of the global governance landscape. This fluid political and economic global environment seems to be leading to the enhancement of the position of regional powers, especially within the developing world. Hence, the importance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and, to some extent, South Africa, within the global governance structure has increased. This rise of importance is derived from the enhancement of the economic capabilities of these powers and the fact that economic interdependence has rendered the world more sensitive …

Iberian Globalization And The Rise Of Catholic Theology Of Religions In The Xvi Century, Enrico Beltramini Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
This article provides a synthetic view of the historical and theological components that explain how Catholicism came to understand the great religious systems in Asia as doctrinally inferior during the sixteenth century in response to the discovery/invasion of the “New Worlds” by Iberian Europeans.2 A strong emphasis on the universal salvific will of God led Catholic theologians to elaborate a doctrine that ultimately altered Catholicism’s understanding of non-Christian religions. 3 The article suggests that the predominant Catholic view of non-Christian religions has been shaped by a specific theological vision that was raised in sixteenth century Southern Europe. In order to …

Deprivation And Resistance: Environmental Crisis, Political Action, And Conflict Resolution In The Niger Delta Since The 1980s, David Aworawo Ph.D.

The interlocking relationship between environmental degradation, poverty, and violent conflict has been a prominent theme contained within the literature on sustainable development and conflict resolution since the mid-twentieth century. While some analysts have argued that violence has not been limited to the poor and deprived, many have concluded from various studies that the devastation of the environment, poverty, and conflict are inextricably intertwined. This article examines this theme by analyzing the pattern of violence and nature of conflict resolution in the oil-producing enclave of the Niger Delta in the past three decades. A report of the United Nations Environment Programme …
