Within the past few years, increasing concerns have arisen about the ways in which corporate sponsorship of clinical trials and continuing medical education activities may bias the information that is published and disseminated about the benefits and risks of medications. Questions have also been raised about the extent of industry influence on the American Psychiatric Association’s diagnostic and treatment guidelines—namely, its DSM and Clinical Practice Guidelines.

This thesis explores the clinical value to the elderly population of combining reminiscence and dance. This five month collaboration between a recently widowed elderly female and a dance/movement therapy intern culminated in a 13 minute choreographed dance performance. Themes that emerged during this art-based study were her relationship with her husband, her role as his primary caregiver and her grief after his death. Eric Erikson identifies integrity vs. despair as the struggle or crisis to be grappled with in the last stage of human development, old age. This theoretical framework has been incorporated in this study.

Dance/Movement Therapy And Responsive Classroom: A Theoretical Synthesis, Shawna L. Solsvig

This theoretical synthesis combines concepts from Chacian dance/movement therapy and the Responsive Classroom approach to teaching and learning, and suggests a proactive behavioral management style for dance/movement therapists that incorporates aspects from these two frameworks. For this synthesis, Chacian dance/movement therapy and Responsive Classroom techniques were adapted and implemented. Through combining these two methods, the researcher suggests a unique treatment model as a way to prevent and confront violent and aggressive behaviors of children that present in a dance/movement therapy session.

This thesis is guided by curiosity regarding the possibility of incorporatingAuthentic Movement into a neuro-rehabilitation treatment program. Using Authentic Movement as part of one client's dance/movement therapy treatment, this qualitative case study explores and documents how mover consciousness, the first layer of Authentic Movement, develops and is taught to one client surviving brain injury. Data includes the researcher's journal entries, embodied knowledge, and notes written using a technique called embodied writing, as well as client journal entries, verbal responses, and the art work produced during each session. The quest to increase lean body mass is widely pursued by those who lift weights. Research is lacking, however, as to the best approach for maximizing exercise-induced muscle growth. Bodybuilders generally train with moderate loads and fairly short rest intervals that induce high amounts of metabolic stress. Powerlifters, on the other hand, routinely train with high intensity loads and lengthy rest periods between sets. While both groups are known to display impressive muscularity, it is not clear which method is superior for hypertrophic gains, or whether other training methods may perhaps show superiority. CONTEXT: Living wills have a poor record of directing care at the end of life, as a copious literature attests. Some speculation centers on the questionable correspondence between the scenario described in living wills versus the real-life circumstances that typically arise at the end of life.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the strength of association between responses to a standard living will question and preferences for treatments in six end-of-life scenarios.

DESIGN: Cross-sectional.

SETTING: Telephone interviews.

Objective: This study investigated a multicomponent cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) for hoarding based on a model proposed by Frost and colleagues and manualized in Steketee and Frost (2007).

Method: Participants with clinically significant hoarding were recruited from the community and a university-based anxiety clinic. Of the 46 patients randomly assigned to CBT or waitlist (WL), 40 completed the 12-week assessment and 36 completed 26 sessions. Treatment included education and case formulation, motivational interviewing, skills training for organizing and problem solving, direct exposure to nonacquiring and discarding, and cognitive therapy. This occurs through the involvement of projects which provide understanding to people on nonviolence theory and practice. Embracing this mission, my study examined individual views on violent behaviors and whether this correlated to their involvement in violent/risky behaviors.

This study investigated empathic accuracy in adolescent romantic relationships. The project examined the relationships between psychological characteristics and relationship outcomes (i.e., satisfaction and aggression) to determine if the relationships were mediated by empathic accuracy. Participants were 92 heterosexual couples aged 14-18 years old who lived in rural areas in Utah and Arizona. Couple members completed surveys assessing attitudes and behaviors in their relationships and a video-recall procedure in which partners rated their own and their partner's behaviors during problem-solving discussion.

Empathic accuracy was generally not related to psychological characteristics or outcomes. It became apparent that there were limitations with the …

According to the theory of cognitive reserve, cognitively enriching aspects of life experience (e.g., education, occupation, and leisure activity) foster the development of more efficient neural networks and cognitive strategies, enabling individuals to cope more effectively with the pathology of dementia. Using extant data from a population-based study, we examined: (1) the effect of reserve accrued through middle life on course of neuropsychological decline; and (2) the role of ongoing engagement in mentally stimulating leisure activities in rate of general cognitive and functional deterioration.

The purpose of this study was to explore experienced clinicians' approach and understanding within treatment with adult male survivors of child sexual abuse. Idiosyncratic effects of Vyvanse™ (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate) and placebo were evaluated in a double-blind alternating treatments experimental design in this 4-week study. Direct, objective measures were combined with traditional behavior ratings to provide data sets to assess whether or not the prescribed stimulant medication showed detectable therapeutic effects for a child whose positive response to medication was not obvious via traditional subjective methods. Effects of medication on core ADHD symptoms, academic performance, and sleep in four children ages 10-12 with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder. Potential side effects were also measured. Tourette Syndrome begins in childhood and is characterized by uncontrollable repetitive actions like neck craning or hopping and noises such as sniffing or chirping. Worst in early adolescence, these tics wax and wane in severity and occur in bouts unpredictably, often drawing unwanted attention from bystanders. Making matters worse, over half of children with Tourette Syndrome also suffer from comorbid, or concurrent, disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). These disorders introduce anxious thoughts, impulsivity, inattention, and mood variability that further disrupt children with Tourette Syndrome from focusing and performing well at school and home. …
