Lion dancing is a cultural art form practiced in numerous Asian and Asian diasporic cultures across the world. While the dance has been studied both in a historical and ethnographic manner, little research exists on its therapeutic benefits. This capstone thesis explores lion dancing through the lens of the expressive arts therapies to uncover the therapeutic factors underlying the practice. Perimenopause is a span of four to six years preceding menopause when estrogen levels decline. Up to 40% of women experience depression during the perimenopause transition. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be an effective treatment for depressive symptoms during perimenopause, but many healthcare practitioners prescribe antidepressants instead of HRT for the management of mood-related symptoms. Perimenopausal depression is associated with the progression of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. This quality improvement project aimed to implement Lean strategies to optimize the intake process in a psychiatric emergency department, thereby reducing patient wait times, minimizing left-without-being-seen (LWBS) occurrences, and improving access to timely psychiatric care.

The project was conducted in a hospital-based psychiatric emergency department in Southeast Texas, serving adults and children six years and older.

Sex biases are prevalent among various neurodevelopmental disorders, with males experiencing them at higher frequencies or severities than females. This male bias is poorly understood, and our lab aims to elucidate this mechanism using our model of transgenerational epigenetic inheritance. Our lab identified the cluster of genes Xlr3b/4b/4c on the X chromosome that are imprinted in the female brain. Preliminary studies suggest that Xlr3 acts as a mediator molecule in our model. Xlr3 knockdown male mice exhibited significant meiocyte loss that can be attributed to Meiotic Sex Chromosome Inactivation. Their female offspring also displayed loss of imprinting of Xlr3 and …

Tobacco-use disorder remains a global health challenge, despite declining rates, and is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, especially among special populations that disproportionally do not have access to comprehensive treatment services. The lack of trained providers and slow dissemination of new tobacco treatment knowledge are obstacles to accessing comprehensive evidence-based treatments. Less is known about the impact of specialized training programs on healthcare professionals' ability to effectively treat tobacco use. The opioid epidemic presents a profound and escalating public health and economic crisis in the United States. According to the CDC, the economic burden of opioid use disorder and fatal opioid overdose in the U.S. reached an estimated $1.02 trillion in 2017 alone, encompassing healthcare costs, lost productivity, criminal justice expenditures, and premature mortality. While current pharmacologic treatments—such as methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone—have proven efficacy, they are not without limitations, including high relapse rates, issues with compliance, stigma, and insufficient engagement in long-term recovery. Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a concerning mental health condition characterized by feelings of extreme sadness, exhaustion, and challenges with maternal-infant bonding. PPD effects mothers’ ability to adequately care for themselves and their newborns. Current research suggests that one in seven women experience symptoms of PPD as late as 12 months postpartum. Despite screening guidelines set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics, 50% of mothers with PPD will not receive a diagnosis.

Mental health outcomes among collegiate student-athletes, has become a broader concern in the 21^st century. This study examines prevalence and incidence of anxiety and depression amongst student-athletes at the University of Louisville from 2019-2023 across different Sports Groups. The prevalence of anxiety was found to be 20.22% and risk of anxiety was 15.65%. The prevalence of depression was found to be 13.11% and risk of depression was 18.75%. Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between sports groups and anxiety/depression. Depression and anxiety are two disorders that significantly increase the risk of suicidal behavior. The disparity between females and males in the prevalence of these disorders becomes more pronounced from adolescence onwards. Specifically, risk factors associated with suicidal behavior in adolescent females are often linked to anxiety and depression, whereas in males, these behaviors are more frequently associated with other types of disorders, such as disruptive behavior. Advanced maternal age (AMA) is defined as a pregnancy in a woman older than 35 years of age. AMA increases the risk for both maternal and neonatal complications, including miscarriage and stillbirth. AMA has also been linked to neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders in the offspring. Recent studies have found that age-associated compositional shifts in the gut microbiota contribute to altered microbial metabolism and enhanced inflammation in the host. PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: This phase 2a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 8-week trial assessed the efficacy and safety of navacaprant, a highly selective kappa opioid receptor antagonist, in adults with major depressive disorder (MDD).

METHODS/PROCEDURES: Participants with 17-Item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) scores of 14 to 30 were randomized 1:1 to once-daily navacaprant 80 mg or placebo (n = 102 each). The primary endpoint was HAMD-17 change from baseline (CFB) to week 8. Secondary endpoints included CFB in Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS). No adjustment for multiple comparisons was made.

Importance: Available antidepressants provide inadequate therapeutic responses in many patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), highlighting a substantial unmet need.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of azetukalner, a novel, potent KV7 potassium channel opener, in participants with MDD.

Design, setting, and participants: X-NOVA was a multicenter, proof-of-concept, phase 2, randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled clinical trial that evaluated azetukalner in participants (adults aged ≥18 to ≤65 years) with moderate to severe MDD in a current depressive episode. Lunch Buddy Mentoring (LBM) is a school-based mentoring program that places mentors in the lunchroom and has them sit with the mentee and peers at the lunch table.
