The Texas Children’s Hospital’s Advanced Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (AQI) Program is a six month mixed didactic and experiential learning experience designed to improve patient care, lower costs, change the culture, and develop quality leaders. As a part of AQI program participants are grouped into teams and each team completes a healthcare related Quality Improvement (QI) project. Each project demonstrates use of various QI tools including process maps, fishbone diagrams, and key driver diagrams. Improvement in pediatric palliative care has been identified as an ongoing research priority. Prevention of pressure injuries (PIs) in pediatric patients is an important nurse-sensitive quality goal. The PI rate at a large urban pediatric hospital triggered a call to action by the Chief Nursing Officer to establish a Hospital Acquired PI (HAPI) Task Force which identified the Skin Champion program as a key improvement strategy. The goals of the Skin Champion program are to lower the rate of HAPIs, empower front line care providers to implement evidence-based care bundles, achieve consistency of practice, and provide resource availability at the point of care. Poverty is an ongoing issue in the United States, with major implications for the health of U.S. citizens. In order to provide compassionate care, nurses must understand their own attitudes towards those living in poverty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate for possible changes in attitudes towards poverty in junior level BSN students after a poverty simulation intervention. Participants were surveyed using the Yun and Weaver’s Short Form Attitudes towards Poverty (SFATP) tool, which looks three factors of poverty attitudes: personal deficiency, stigma, and structural perspective.

The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) supports the timely and complete immunization of all infants, children, adolescents, and adults in an attempt to maximize the health and wellbeing of all people. Routine childhood immunizations prevent as many as 3 million deaths per year. In addition, 1.5 million deaths per year could be avoided if global vaccination efforts continue to improve (World Health Organization, 2017).

STRATEGIES TO REDUCE CENTRAL LINE ASSOCIATED BLOODSTREAM INFECTIONS

Every central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) leads to poor outcomes, increased mortality and increased healthcare costs. A pediatric care team in an academic tertiary medical center set a goal to reduce the number of these infections on their unit.

The team’s research showed that daily bathing greatly decreases CLABSI. Their baseline metrics demonstrated an unacceptable level of those with central lines being bathed. A root cause analysis revealed that patient and family refusal was the leading cause for those who did not bathe.

Effective communication between patient caregivers has been shown to reduce stress and trauma related to hospitalization and subsequent improved outcomes. An HCAHP score for a 30 bed acute inpatient pediatric unit illustrated the confusion faced by children as a result of nursing and care life specialists not working together as a team.

When a child is in pain, parents often seek out treatment at an emergency department. After a detailed chart review it was determined that only 32.53% of the pediatric patients who present to a rural, northern California, ED in pain receive any documented form of analgesia during their time in the ED. A review of the literature revealed that triage nurse-initiated protocols can successfully manage to provide consistent and efficient analgesia to patients who present to an ED with pain. Concussions are an important and timely subject, especially within the pediatric population, as they are the most involved in extracurricular contact sports and are susceptible to concussions and their sequelae. The researcher performed a quasi-experimental pilot study in a pediatric primary care office where the researcher educated 15 providers on the HEADS UP concussion screening tool and management approach. The researcher gave providers pre- and post-intervention surveys to determine if providers’ comfort and knowledge regarding assessing and managing concussions within the pediatric primary care setting changed. Method: Literature on APRN dental IPE was searched was searched via CINAHL Complete from 2007-2018, looking for scholarly journals, English language. The search was narrowed from 55 to three relevant, data-based studies.

In the hospital setting, prevention of failure-to-rescue (FTR) events is an important aspect of patient safety. The use of patient simulation as a strategy to educate nurses on the prevention of these events offers two modes of learning: 1) experiential learning through simulation and 2) reflection through debriefing.
