Asthma is a chronic disease affecting families in the United States; especially pediatric patients aged 5-18. In Pittsfield, Massachusetts the local prevalence of asthma is 14.4% versus 12.1% statewide and 8.4% nationally. These patients miss school days thus causing parental workday loss. In 2016, 14.4 million missed school days occurred due to asthma (Alexander et al., 2016). Unexpected clinic visits, as well as emergency room visits due to asthma, can contribute to rising healthcare costs both locally and nationally. Unexpected asthma visits are a leading reason for visits to this author’s clinic.

Background: Adolescent patients with substance use disorders (SUD) struggle with seeking treatment, staying motivated during treatment, and are at a higher risk of relapse following treatment compared with other SUD patients. A positive therapeutic alliance between provider and patient has been shown to positively affect treatment outcomes. Therefore, describing interpersonal patient traits which influence this alliance is integral to keeping patients in treatment and preventing relapse post-treatment.

Background: Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are seen as a “healthy” alternative in comparison to traditional cigarettes. However, the increased use of e-cigarettes as a new trend among the youth, may serve as a gateway to traditional cigarette use.

Antibiotic misuse and overuse are major contributors to antibiotic resistance which is responsible for the death of 23,000 American’s annually. There is a growing body of evidence that antibiotic stewardship programs are successful in reducing antibiotic prescribing rates while maintaining safe patient care. This phenomenological study focuses on five mothers' experiences of the phenomenon of living with a diagnosed food allergy in the family. Attention is given to the contexts or situations that have typically influenced or affected their experiences, including the impact of the diagnoses, travel and restaurants, friendships, sibling relationships, and anxiety. There is a major emphasis on these mothers' experiences advocating for the needs of their children in schools, including their strategies, concerns, and frustrations. Rural America creates a challenging, poorly financed environment for pediatric health. More than 20 million Americans live in areas with physician shortages too great to meet basic health need (Petlz et al., 2013). In comparing rural versus urban data, rural population experience a 7% higher rate of chronic health conditions (44% versus 37%), increased inpatient costs ($8, 507 versus $7, 174) and higher odds ratios for pediatric 30-day readmission. Findings from Khan et al., (2015) note that hospital readmission rates have higher odds ratios in pediatric patients (95% CI); of Caucasian ethnicity 0.74 [0.65–0.84] to 0.88 [0.79–0.99]); when admitted to …

Mother’s own milk (MOM) reduces the risk of morbidities in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants. When MOM is unavailable, donor breastmilk (DM) is used, with unclear impact on short- and long-term growth. This retrospective analysis compared anthropometric data at six time points from birth to 20–24 months corrected age in VLBW infants who received MOM supplements of preterm formula (n = 160) versus fortified DM (n = 161) during neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization. The cohort was 46% female; mean birth weight and gestational age (GA) were 998 g and 27.3 weeks. Multilevel linear growth models assessed changes …

This study was to determine the effects of active participation and education of caregivers on the pain experienced by their hospitalized children, the anxiety of the caregivers, and the working efficiency of nurses when administering peripheral intravenous (IV) injections to their children. It was found IV injections were the most feared procedures experienced by inpatient pediatric patients. A quasi-experimental design used in which different types of treatment were given to subjects in three groups.
