Reframing Recovery: Comparing Music Interventions And Traditional Rehabilitation Methods For Cognitive Function In Traumatic Brain Injury Patients, Laura Velez 2025 University of Central Florida

Reframing Recovery: Comparing Music Interventions And Traditional Rehabilitation Methods For Cognitive Function In Traumatic Brain Injury Patients, Laura Velez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects millions annually, often resulting in long-term cognitive deficits that hinder independence and quality of life. While traditional rehabilitation methods address many physical and functional limitations, cognitive impairments—such as deficits in attention, memory, and executive function—often persist. Emerging evidence highlights music-based interventions as a promising complement to standard therapies, yet comparative research remains limited. This integrative literature review examined the effects of music interventions versus traditional rehabilitation methods on cognitive function in adults with TBI. Using a systematic search of databases including MEDLINE, CINAHL Ultimate, APA PsycInfo, and Music Index, eight peer-reviewed studies were selected for …

Beyond Involuntary Movements: A Case Of Diabetic Striatopathy Complicated By Cardiac Arrest, Deepa M

Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences

Abstract

Diabetic striatopathy (DS) is a rare neurological manifestation of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, typically characterized by hemichorea–hemiballismus and distinctive basal ganglia abnormalities on neuroimaging. We report the case of a 57-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes mellitus who presented with generalized choreiform and ballistic movements and subsequently developed an in-hospital cardiac arrest. Diagnostic evaluation revealed uncontrolled hyperglycemia (random blood glucose 243 mg/dL; HbA1c 8.3%) without ketosis, with neuroimaging findings consistent with DS. The patient was initially managed in the casualty department and subsequently admitted to a neuro stepdown intensive care unit, where she remained for 10 days. Comprehensive medical, …

Nurse's Satisfaction With The Implementation Of A Standardized Physical Assessment Template In Home Based Medical Care, Nicole Silvestri

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Background and Literature Review:
Home based medical care (HBMC), part of Optum’s UnitedHealth division, delivers in-home urgent care to medically complex patients at high risk for hospitalization. A nurse is dispatched to the home and a provider connects via telemedicine to conduct the visit. Currently, there is no standardized documentation tool to communicate physical assessment findings between the in-home nurse and the telemedicine provider. A literature review was conducted using PubMed and CINAHL with search terms including nursing satisfaction, physical assessment, EMR, template, standardized tool, and documentation. This revealed challenges in nursing documentation, communication, and physical assessment, particularly regarding …

Relationship Between Ehealth Literacy And Use Of Patient Portals Among Older Adults: An Integrative Review, Lore Oluwatominiyi 2025 Eastern Michigan University

Relationship Between Ehealth Literacy And Use Of Patient Portals Among Older Adults: An Integrative Review, Lore Oluwatominiyi

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The rapid advancement of healthcare technologies, including patient portals, has the potential to improve patient engagement and health outcomes, particularly among older adults. However, the adoption of patient portals among this demographic remains relatively low, primarily due to varying levels of eHealth literacy. The aim of this integrative review, guided by the Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) framework, was to investigate the experience of eHealth literacy and patient portal use among older adults. The databases of PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched for articles published between 2017 and 2023. Keywords used included: eHealth literacy, patient portals, and older adults. Thirty records …

Enhancing Nursing Education To Improve Care For Patients With Substance Use Disorder: A Literature Review, Allma Swier

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Background. As nursing students attend undergraduate school and prepare to enter the workforce, clinical experience and classroom training shape who they will become as caregivers. There is a lack of education built into the standard curriculum on how to care for people with substance use disorders empathetically and professionally. Aim. The purpose of this literature review is to determine if nursing students feel adequately prepared to care for patients with substance use disorder, and how implementation of educational curricula can increase students' knowledge of caring for individuals with substance use disorder, leading to an increase in confidence when caring for …

Resilience And Reality: Exploring The Lived Experiences Of People Living With Hiv In Texas During The Covid-19 Pandemic – A Qualitative Study., Ahmed F. Alanazi

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

This study investigated the lived experiences of individuals living with HIV (PLWH) in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area of Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic, using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) framework. The research examined the intersection of health, social dynamics, and psychological resilience among PLWH, who faced compounded vulnerabilities due to systemic inequities and the dual public health crises of HIV and COVID-19. Through semi-structured interviews with ten participants from diverse backgrounds, the study captured the profound impacts of disrupted healthcare systems, heightened stigma, and social isolation on this marginalized population. The findings reveal that the pandemic exacerbated existing inequities …

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Project Title: Quality Improvement Initiative to Decrease Excessive Testing for Streptococcal Pharyngitis in Adults in an Outpatient Clinic Setting

Background and Rationale: Current guidelines recommend utilization of a clinical decision-making tool, like the Centor score, in conjunction with confirmatory diagnostic methods, such as a throat culture or rapid test, rather than either method alone. The existing practice at the clinic site was to test most adults with upper respiratory infection symptoms (e.g., sore throat, cough, fever, sinus congestion) with little discretion. With the reported prevalence of streptococcal pharyngitis or “strep throat” in adults being 5-15%, universally testing adult patients could …

The Impact Of High Deductible Health Plans On Mental Health Treatment, Kristian D. Dambrino 2025 Belmont University

The Impact Of High Deductible Health Plans On Mental Health Treatment, Kristian D. Dambrino

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Project Title: The Impact of High Deductible Health Plans on Mental Health Treatment

Background and Rationale: High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs) are designed to reduce overall healthcare spending by shifting more upfront costs to patients to discourage overutilization of care, yet HDHPs often increase financial burden, particularly in outpatient mental health care. Patients covered by HDHPs often face substantial out-of-pocket costs before reaching their deductible. This can lead to potential delays or discontinuation of psychiatric treatment. Financial transparency interventions by the mental health provider may mitigate these barriers through more-informed patient decision-making regarding payment options. This project evaluates the impact …

Exploring Factors Influencing Posttraumatic Growth Among Nurses: A Path Analysis, Shinhi Han, Hee Sun Kang, Koun Eum, Kathleen Karsten, Faith Armstrong

Publications and Research

Introduction: Persistent exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic has subjected frontline nurses to heightened levels of collective traumatic syndromes, including stress, burnout, and emotional distress. Resilience and self-compassion may serve as protective factors in mitigating stress and burnout stemming from the pandemic. Moreover, these factors may contribute to posttraumatic growth (PTG), which has been recognized as a potential outcome for nurses caring for patients. This study aimed to investigate the factors contributing to PTG among registered nurses, with perceived stress, burnout, resilience, and self-compassion.

Methods: This cross-sectional observational survey used convenience sampling with 228 registered nurses from New York. Data were …

Reducing Unnecessary Antibiotics For The Treatment Of Urinary Tract Infections, Megan A. Carullo 2025 West Chester University of Pennsylvania

Reducing Unnecessary Antibiotics For The Treatment Of Urinary Tract Infections, Megan A. Carullo

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections in women and are often a reason for prescribing antibiotics. Appropriately treating these infections is vital to prevent significant health concerns such as pyelonephritis or sepsis. Providers commonly prescribe antibiotics as a preventive measure, but incorrect usage can lead to unnecessary use of antibiotics. This is a large concern for the medical community, given the increased rates of antibiotic resistance. This quality improvement project aimed to answer the following research question: In women with recurrent UTIs (rUTIs), does presumptive treatment compared to standard treatment upon confirmed infection increase the number …
