West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Abstract

This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project explores the impact of implementing a Virtual Discharge Nurse (VDN) on patient length of stay (LOS) and discharge timing at Paoli Hospital within the Main Line Health system. Hospital discharges are often complex and can negatively impact patient flow and outcomes. This study highlights the urgent need for innovative discharge practices in healthcare and supports the potential benefits of integrating technology into nursing roles to improve patient care and operational efficiency. The project's significance lies in addressing these challenges by utilizing VDN to enhance communication, education, and resource management during discharge. We …

Cultivating Civility, Courtney Ruck 2025 West Chester University of Pennsylvania

Cultivating Civility, Courtney Ruck

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Nurse leaders play a vital role in creating, sustaining, and ensuring a culture of civility along with a healthy work environment for both staff and patients. A challenge nurse leaders face today is the prevalence of bullying and incivility that continues to grow within the nursing profession and has detrimental effects on nursing staff, patient satisfaction, and healthcare organizations. Bullying and incivility can have disastrous effects on the mental, emotional, physical, and professional lives of those victimized by such behavior. When a culture of incivility is prevalent, patients suffer as secondary victims; patient safety and patient satisfaction are compromised. Organizations …

Implementing Holograms To Perform Cognitive Health History Screenings, Franchesca I. Gonzalez 2025 University of Central Florida

Implementing Holograms To Perform Cognitive Health History Screenings, Franchesca I. Gonzalez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Marginalized populations, defined as a group of individuals who experience systematic disadvantages due to various social identity factors (Oxford Review, n.d.), experience uneven barriers to cognitive and mental health assessments, including socioeconomic, linguistic, and educational inequities, that contribute to misdiagnosis (Petersen et al., 2018, Saeed & Masters, 2021). This study investigates the feasibility of hologram-based patient simulations as an educational intervention for undergraduate nursing and graduate Nurse Practitioner students. Culturally representative, three-dimensional holographic patients were created to replicate complex geriatric encounters and facilitate cognitive health screenings. Established assessment tools, including the Mini-Mental Status Examination, Patient Health Questionnaire 2 and Patient …

The integration of virtual simulation and self-debriefing in nursing education offers promising approaches for enhancing students' competency in medication administration and dosage calculation. This study aims to explore undergraduate nursing students' perceptions and experiences with virtual simulation and self-debriefing, building on findings from a previously published RCT that demonstrated improved learning outcomes through these approaches. In the first phase (self-debriefing), 153 students answered five open-ended questions, followed by a focus group with six students in the second phase. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis by two independent coders to ensure consistency and credibility. The study highlights the benefits of …

Using Educational Intervention To Impact Provider And Nurse Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In Contingency Management At An Sud Clinic, Chinwe Egwudo 2025 Arkansas State University - Jonesboro

Using Educational Intervention To Impact Provider And Nurse Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In Contingency Management At An Sud Clinic, Chinwe Egwudo

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The US opioid epidemic crisis led to 700,000 deaths in 2019 alone. Poor adherence to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) strains individuals, families, and the healthcare systems, with rising relapses at the project site highlighting the need for evidence-based intervention. Studies show that contingency management (CM), a behavioral intervention that incentivizes desired behaviors, improves adherence to MOUD. Despite its effectiveness, CM remains underutilized in clinical settings due to healthcare providers’ lack of knowledge and self-efficacy. This project aimed to bridge the knowledge gap by implementing an educational intervention to impact healthcare providers’ knowledge and self-efficacy in applying CM protocols …

Implementing “Break Buddies”, A Nurse-Nurse Collaboration Model, To Improve Employee Satisfaction Within Cardiology Unit, Amanda Barbarino 2025 Sacred Heart University

Implementing “Break Buddies”, A Nurse-Nurse Collaboration Model, To Improve Employee Satisfaction Within Cardiology Unit, Amanda Barbarino

DNP Projects

Background/Introduction: Employee satisfaction and patient satisfaction/experience are largely correlated and when one declines, evidence suggests that the other will be affected similarly (Copanitsanou et al., 2017). The Great Place to Work (GPTW), a nationally recognized designation, is measured using a standardized, commercially available staff survey to evaluate nurses’ satisfaction throughout the project site organization (Boo, 2024). Nurse-nurse collaboration is one model to implement approaches to improve staff satisfaction (Stutting, 2023).

Project Goals

  1. Implement and pilot a nurse-nurse collaboration ‘break buddy’ model to support staff and increase employee satisfaction on a Cardiology Unit in a community hospital setting within a 2-month …

Provider-Nurse Rounding Checklist: A Quality Improvement Project, Danielle Ursone

DNP Projects

Background/Introduction: Communication and collaboration between healthcare providers and nurses are essential for a good working relationship. Increased collaboration has been shown to improve staff attitudes and job satisfaction. Using a checklist provides an organized way to perform rounds and increase satisfaction with teamwork as well as decrease miscommunication. At this DNP project site, a rounding checklist is not being used, resulting in a disconnect between the nurses and healthcare providers.

Objective/Purpose: Project goals include:

  1. Assess nurses' and providers’ thoughts and feelings on current collaboration and rounding done. Assess what nurses and providers find as barriers for using a rounding checklist …

Improving Hemoglobin A1c Levels In A Fqhc: A Quality Improvement Project, Laura E. Mason

DNP Projects

Significance and Background

Incarcerated individuals have a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) than the general population and face unique challenges in managing their condition. These include limited access to nutritious food, disruptions in the healthcare continuity, and socioeconomic barriers such as unstable housing and unemployment. Upon release these challenges can compromise glycemic control.

The Transitions Clinic Model supports formerly incarcerated individuals in managing chronic conditions, including T2D during their reintegration. Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) have been shown to improve glycemic control and self-efficacy, leading to reductions in Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. This project aimed to implement a CGM …

Racial Health Disparities Among Pregnant Women of Color in New York City: Biological and Systemic Impacts

Abstract

This thesis aims to explore how racial health disparities, underrepresentation in gynecology, and socioeconomic barriers contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes among women of color in New York City. Through an interdisciplinary approach that combines resources from medical anthropology and human biology, this research will examine the biological implications of chronic stress, specifically HPA axis dysregulation, and its role in maternal health outcomes. With the idea of intersectionality, as conceptualized by Kimberlé Crenshaw, the study analyzes the various effects of systemic inequities and social …
