Background: Patients with heart failure (HF) are required to participate in self-care activities. This activities include taking prescribed medications, monitoring for symptoms, intervening appropriately and evaluating the response to the treatment. Cognitive impairment occurs relatively frequently in this population. Few studies have attempted to describe the nature of the relationship between self-care and cognitive impairment in this population.

Purpose:/ This study investigated the relationship between cognitive function and self-care ability in patients with HF. It also investigated the relationship between both self-care and cognitive function and subsequent hospital admission.

Little is known about the relationship between SagePlus newsletters and its effectiveness to motivate physical activity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of the SagePlus newsletter and its ability to motivate participants to achieve their goals to increase physical activity. A nonexperimental, descriptive correlational design was used in this study. Calls were made until the list of potential participants was exhausted. Forty English speaking participants were contacted and agreed to participate in the telephone survey from a potential list of 190 women enrolled in the SagePlus program. This qualitative study included women who had gone through the menopausal transition and had experienced obesity, and it focused on their weight histories and experiences across the life course. The goal of this research was to add to the body of knowledge concerning weight gain by applying a novel middle range theory (story theory). A qualitative design was used to explore the use of spirituality and prayer by older adults who have chronic illness and reside in a rural community. Thirteen individuals responded to a flyer soliciting participation in a study of the use of spirituality as part of health care. Participants were at least 60 years of age, had at least one chronic illness and resided in North Central Florida. Twelve participants then responded to six open-ended questions based on an adaption of an instrument used by Dr. Shevon Harvey in her doctoral dissertation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of mentorships and leadership practices of nursing faculty teaching in academia. The purpose of this study was to examine the admission requirements of nursing programs to better understand the philosophical underpinnings and complexity of selection criteria. Findings from a qualitative ethnographic study that examined the experiences of a group of persons with Parkinson disease are presented in this article. Culturally competent care for persons who share a common illness, such as Parkinson disease, is facilitated when the findings are incorporated into the Clinically Relevant Continuum Model. Use of this model allows providers to evaluate and use appropriate published evidence in addition to provider expertise and patient preferences and values.

The purpose of the study was to describe the experience of discontinuing hormonal contraceptive use among women in rural Uganda. A significant number of women in Uganda discontinue hormonal contraception even though such method has been effective. Consequently, these women have unprotected sex, although not wanting to conceive. Narrative descriptions of the experiences by eight women were analyzed using content analysis. A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG MATERNAL CAREGIVER FAMILY MANAGEMENT BEHAVIORS, CHILDHOOD ASTHMA MORBIDITY, AND ASTHMA CONTROL ABSTRACT LINDA GIBSON NURSING Childhood asthma, the most common chronic childhood condition, is associated with high rates of asthma morbidity (emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and school days missed due to asthma). Inadequate asthma control accounts for $1.9 billion annual health expenditures. Numerous studies have identified the relationship of the family caregiver's perception regarding asthma management and the child's asthma outcomes; though few have examined family caregiver asthma management behaviors. PROBLEM: Resourcefulness is known to reduce depression in adults, but its effects on children are less well known, possibly for lack of a psychometrically sound measure.

METHODS: This study examined the reliability and validity of the 32-item Children's Self-Control Scale (C-SCS), which measures resourcefulness, in 122 school-aged children.

FINDINGS: Standard scale refinement methods produced a 10-item scale with α = .72 and correlations with the C-SCS (r = .86), positive thoughts (r = .38), and depressive symptoms (r = –.32). Factor analysis revealed two factors: problem-solving and delay of gratification.

Significant growth in proposals has intensified competition for funds and challenged the Nursing Education Research Advisory Council’s review process. The purpose of this article is to explore the NLN’s nursing education research proposals from 2008 to 2010 in order to improve performance and provide guidance to future nursing education researchers. Studies using dogs provide an ideal solution to the gap in animal models for natural disease and translational medicine. This is evidenced by approximately 400 inherited disorders being characterized in domesticated dogs, most of which are relevant to humans. There are several hundred isolated populations of dogs (breeds) and each has a vastly reduced genetic variation compared with humans; this simplifies disease mapping and pharmacogenomics. Dogs age five- to eight-fold faster than do humans, share environments with their owners, are usually kept until old age and receive a high level of health care.
