In 2009, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners report identified more than 125, 000 Nurse Practitioners (NP) working in the United States. As the number of NPs increases and their role expands, questions about their work satisfaction and ability to learn and perform the role arise. Since NPs have to combine a nursing philosophy with a medical care model, it is often difficult to mediate the two approaches and fully understand the role. Infants born prematurely with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) are at high risk for complications from mechanical ventilation. Strategies are needed to minimize their days on the ventilator. The purpose of this study was to compare extubation success rates in infants treated with two different types of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). A retrospective cohort study design was used. Data were retrieved from electronic medical records for patients in a large, metropolitan, Level III neonatal intensive care unit. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects over 200,000 women in the United States each year placing them at a sevenfold risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus within a decade of delivery as compared to women without GDM. Diabetes has been projected to become more epidemic among women yet, a paucity of research has examined glucose screening trends beyond the postpartum period and longitudinal studies are few among those with a reproductive history of GDM. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of participation in a peer-led, strength-based family education program focused on family resilience factors in returning OIF/OEF veterans and their families. 4 Data sources: De-identified data from Veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and veteran family member participants in the 8-week Operation Resilient Families (ORP) program was analyzed. Data analysis included review of demographic information and statistical analysis of pre- and post self-assessment evaluation questionnaires. Laboratory testing is necessary when it contributes to the overall clinical management of the patient. Redundant testing, however, is often unnecessary and expensive and contributes to overall reductions in healthcare system efficiency. The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, to evaluate the frequency of ordering duplicate laboratory tests in hospitalized patients and the costs associated with this practice. There is little known about the effectiveness of the Steps Program specifically used in the SagePlus program in Minnesota to promote physical activity and reduce cardiovascular risk. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the SagePlus Steps Program for low-income middle-aged women ages 40 to 64 to meet a daily physical activity goal of 10,000 steps and reduce their cardiovascular disease risk, measured by their Framingham Risk Score. Background

Regular participation in physical activity can prevent many chronic health conditions. Computerized self-management programs are effective clinical tools to support patient participation in physical activity. This pilot study sought to develop and evaluate an online interface for primary care providers to refer patients to an Internet-mediated walking program called Stepping Up to Health (SUH) and to monitor participant progress in the program.

Methods

Background: For an event that occurs three times daily and offers the most opportunity for socialization, mealtimes warrant careful hand feeding implementation by NH staff. PWD may exhibit aversive feeding behaviors that are misinterpreted. This vital misinterpretation can lead to malnutrition in the PWD and increase the risk of mortality. Objective: The goal of this two-month study was to test clinical feasibility and collect pilot data for an intervention to train nursing home (NH) staff via a web-based dementia feeding skills training module with group coaching.
