Standardized Care Of The Late Preterm Infant In Upper Midwest Hospitals, Michelle Susanne Foy
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Standardizing care or critical pathways have delivered evidence-based care in adult medicine and have positive patient outcomes. Some aspects of standardized care have been used in neonatology, but less often in caring for the late preterm infant (gestational week 34-37 weeks). With each level of care nursery, Level-I, level-II or level-III, there can be a wide range of how to care for the late preterm infant. The purpose of this study was to determine if nurseries or various levels of care had established standards of care specific to the late preterm infant and what barriers existed that prohibited standards of …

An Exploration Of The Relationships Among Demographics, Risk Factors, Perceived Self-Efficacy, And Fall Prevention Behaviors In Community-Dwelling Thai Older Adults, Kanyarat Ubolwan
Wayne State University Dissertations
Background: Worldwide, falls among older adults lead to significant physical, psychological, and social problems. Studies have described fall prevalence, risk factors, and the impact of falls in Thailand. Although fall prevention requires significant self-care abilities, insufficient knowledge exists about how to prevent falls in Thai community settings or the predictors of fall prevention behaviors among Thai Older adults.
Purpose: Orem's Self-Care Theory was used: 1) to examine the relationships among the basic conditioning factors (BCFs) of age, gender, falls, comorbidity, mental and physical health status, self-care agency (i.e., self-efficacy), and fall prevention self-care behaviors and 2) to determine the predictors …

Nurses account for a significant proportion of the health care workforce in most countries. In the African continent, it is estimated that nurses constitute about 80% of the health care professionals, however they are marginally represented in health research investigations and policy/decision-making roles. A descriptive research design was used to obtain data from 120 registered nurses in Calabar municipality, Nigeria. The study aimed at assessing the extent of nurses’ involvement in research and policy development. The findings revealed that only 30(25.0%) of the respondents indicated that they had been involved in research activity. Majority 74(61.7%) utilized research findings and perceived …

Congruence Between Nursing Home Resident And Staff Caregiver Perceptions Of Residents' Self-Perceived Autonomy, Paul E. Urbanski
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This qualitative cross-sectional study examines autonomy among long-term care residents and how certified nurse aides (CNAs) understand resident autonomy as expressed through residents' preferences. The study took place at one long-term care facility with N = 12 (7 residents and 5 CNAs). A phenomenological perspective is utilized in order to describe the meaning residents ascribe to personal preferences and the influence frailty has on those preferences. In addition, certified nurse aides, self-described as competent to report on a participating resident's preferences were interviewed separately. Open-ended interviews were conducted and the data obtained was examined for congruence between the resident's and …

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) patients experience barriers to health care that include fear of discrimination and limited access to providers knowledgeable about and sensitive to the LGBT population and their specific health needs. This study examined the effectiveness of an educational intervention conducted at Illinois Wesleyan University designed to improve knowledge level and attitudes of nursing students toward LGBT patient care. The educational intervention focused on key terminology, health disparities, medical needs of transgender patients and culturally sensitive communication skills necessary for competent LGBT patient care. Knowledge level and attitudes were evaluated before and after the educational intervention …

Each year, more than two million people die from diarrhea-associated diseases. Although there is a global need for safe drinking water, culturally appropriate health teaching is essential to behavior change. This study evaluated the impact of a health education program in a small rural community in Cameroon. Flash cards and a modified version of the CDC-KPC 2000 survey were used to collect data in 57 homes. Children who lived in households with working Manz BioSand filters were less likely to have had diarrhea in the 2 weeks prior to the evaluation. There remained a gap between health knowledge and healthy …

Abstract
Background
Persistent neuroinflammation and disruptions in brain energy metabolism is commonly seen in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Because of the lack of success of most TBI interventions and the documented benefits of environmental enrichment (EE) in enhancing brain plasticity, here we focused our study on use of EE in regulating injury-induced neuroinflammation and disruptions in energy metabolism in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Adult male Wistar rats were used in the study and randomly assigned to receive either: mild TBI (mTBI) using the controlled cortical injury model or sham surgery. Following surgery, rats from each group were further randomized …

Background: A critical component of disaster preparedness is the training of the healthcare workforce. Because live disaster exercises are expensive and labor intensive, virtual reality simulation may offer a viable solution as a disaster training method. The purpose of this integrative review was to examine the scientific evidence pertaining to the efficacy of virtual reality training in disaster training of healthcare workers. Inclusion criteria were: empiric literature focused on the use of virtual reality simulation (VRS) in disaster training, written in English, peer-reviewed literature and published during the time period of 2005-June, 2012. An exclusion criterion was the use of …

The Call Of Nursing: Stories From The Frontlines Of Nursing, Melissa Erickson
Book Chapters
The Call of Nursing is not a typical book about nurses. It takes us behind the curtain of silence that often hangs between us -- the patients who rely on the health care system -- and the women and men who form the backbone of that system, and who are entrusted with our intimate care.
Melissa Erickson:
I worked in Women Care at a large hospital in Minneapolis which delivers more babies than any other hospital in the state. Women Care is a level IV obstetric care facility. Primarily, I cared for high-risk mothers and babies there, including high-order multiples. …

Preserving Skin Integrity By Utilizing Unit-Specific Wound Care Champions For Pressure Ulcer-Prevention, Christine A. Fanelli
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
It is estimated that the incidence of pressure ulcers range from 0.4 to 38% in a hospital setting. Overall prevalence in the U.S. was 12.3% in 2009. A CMS analysis reported that pressure ulcers were responsible for over $2.41 billion dollars (Niederhauser et al., 2012). A large body of literature related to pressure ulcer incidence and prevalence reflects that education is not always the principal influencing factor for prevention; social and organizational barriers are just as critical when adapting clinical practice guidelines. To address these barriers, an evidence-based practice (EBP) project was implemented at a large, tertiary hospital in the …

Optimizing Atraumatic Emergency Care In Child Sexual Abuse, Kristen A. Morris
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Child sexual abuse has been identified as a common problem. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, in 2010 it was estimated that child victims of sexual abuse accounted for 9.2% (69,368) of the 573,794 children under the age of 12 years who were the victims of maltreatment. The emergency department (ED) is often the point of entry into the healthcare system for child sexual abuse victims, which adds to the resource burden of this department nationwide. The purpose of this evidence-based project was to develop a best-practice screening tool for medical providers to guide the …
