Nurses play a crucial role in promoting educational programs aimed at informing women about their reproductive health. However, the role of nurses in providing the health related information is not well defined. Guided by the continuum model, this project evaluated nurses' perceived role in promoting the reproductive health of women during the preconception period. Twenty nurses from 2 outpatient offices wrote responses to an open-ended questionnaire. A summary of the responses indicated that 70% of the participants refer women to community-based programs to enhance awareness for preconception care. Twenty percent of the nurses indicated that they have an educational program …

Development Of A Patient And Family Educational Document Following Cancer Treatment, Debbie Slipkovich 2016 Walden University

Development Of A Patient And Family Educational Document Following Cancer Treatment, Debbie Slipkovich

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

New pharmacological interventions for oncology patients have resulted in longer lifespans after treatment completion and a large population of cancer survivors in communities. When patients complete treatment regimens for cancer, they leave the oncology practice with minimal knowledge of community resources that may assist them during this time of transition. These patients may not interact with care providers again until they return for a surveillance appointment in the future. Guided by Bandura's social cognitive theory, this project's aim was to develop a community-specific brochure that described the variety of services available to oncology patients and their families. The practice-focused question …

Guideline Use In Asthma Management In Primary Care Setting: A Systematic Review, Nkiru Ezeani Ezeani

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory disease that is characterized by reversible airway obstruction due to hyper-responsiveness of the tracheobronchial tree. The condition disproportionately affects male children, females, and the aged globally, and its prevalence keeps rising despite being a preventable condition in terms of relapse. Most asthmatic patients receive care in primary care settings. Various health agencies have developed asthma management guidelines to improve the quality of asthma care; however, in some cases, adherence to these guidelines is substandard. The overarching aim of this study was to determine whether primary care providers manage asthma in line with the available …

An Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of Problem-Based Learning In Nursing Education, Yvette Marie Jackson 2016 Walden University

An Exploration Of The Effectiveness Of Problem-Based Learning In Nursing Education, Yvette Marie Jackson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Critical-thinking is an essential skill that graduate nurses need to make sound clinical decisions. While traditional lecturing is the method most commonly used in nursing education, incorporating problem-based learning (PBL) into nursing curricula has been suggested as a better option for students' learning of theory and practice. The purpose of this study was to explore the difference in critical-thinking and problem-solving skills between nursing students taught using PBL versus those taught with traditional classroom lectures. A quasi-experimental approach, with cognitive learning theory as the foundation, was used to compare the results of an Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) Comprehensive Predictor posttest …

Evidence demonstrates the health benefits of early breastfeeding for mothers as well as infants. The World Health Organization states, "Breast milk should be given within the first hour of life." This purpose of this project was to develop a breastfeeding educational toolkit to promote breastfeeding in the hospital environment. The question that guided this project was, "Will the development of a breastfeeding education toolkit, designed to serve as a learning tool to support the breastfeeding mothers, be found to be useful and valid by professional staff and lay end-users?" The goals of the project were to provide an educational toolkit …

Hypertension Management Through Community Outreach Services For Inmates Released From Jail, Janet Baby Wurie 2016 Walden University

Hypertension Management Through Community Outreach Services For Inmates Released From Jail, Janet Baby Wurie

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Hypertension (HTN) is the most common chronic disease among jail inmates. Many inmates treated for HTN while incarcerated in the Fairfax County Jail do not continue treatment when they return to their communities. Factors that contribute to discontinuing HTN management once the inmate returns to the community include homelessness, low income, and lack of access to care. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to educate inmates with HTN about community-based outreach services for HTN management and continuity of care while in the community. The outcome measured was the number of inmates who returned to jail reporting use of …

Perioperative Orientation, Education, And Mentoring (Poem) Program, Esther M. Johnstone 2016 Walden University

Perioperative Orientation, Education, And Mentoring (Poem) Program, Esther M. Johnstone

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Perioperative registered nurses (RNs) are vital to the provision of safe patient care for those undergoing invasive and surgical procedures within acute care settings. Unrealistic transition-to-practice (T2P) expectations for novice RNs (newly licensed and experienced RNs new to perioperative nursing) have resulted in significant turnover and attrition rates as high as 45%. A T2P program, known as the Perioperative Orientation, Education, and Mentoring (POEM) program, was developed to address attrition and turnover through mentoring and professional development. The POEM program was a pilot program implemented at a large academic medical center. An evaluation tool known as the Surgical Skill Assessment …

Infant-Driven Feeding Vs. Scheduled Feeding: The Effect On Hospital Length Of Stay, Lori L. Messer 2016 Walden University

Infant-Driven Feeding Vs. Scheduled Feeding: The Effect On Hospital Length Of Stay, Lori L. Messer

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Developmental delays related to feeding dysfunction in premature infants can lead to lengthy hospitalizations and increased healthcare costs initially and throughout the first year of the child's life. The purpose of this project was to use readiness-to-feed assessments to evaluate the impact of an infant-driven feeding protocol on length of stay. The project compared the length of stay of 2 groups of infants: a demand fed according to a readiness-to-feed protocol (protocol group, n = 14) and a traditionally fed according to scheduled, volume-driven feedings (traditional group, n = 15). The logic model served as the change management framework and …

Use Of High-Fidelity Simulation Training For New Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit Nurses, Bryan Boling

DNP Projects

Critical care nursing is one of the most challenging, high-stress fields in healthcare. This is especially true for nurses in the highly specialized environment of the cardiothoracic intensive care unit (CTICU). The experience level of nurses in critical care is positively linked with patient outcomes; however, with older nurses retiring or moving away from the bedside and younger nurses increasingly moving into advanced practice or management and leadership roles it is becoming more difficult to maintain a high degree of nursing experience in the ICU. Simulation training has been used to provide safe, effective training, and it is even possible …
