Abstract

Objective: To evaluate physician perspectives of the current maintenance of certification(MOC) activities utilized by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG).

Methods: We performed a convergent mixed methods study, using parallel quantitative and qualitative data collected via the internet plus paper surveys of a nationwide sample of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob/Gyn) physicians from November 12 to December 13, 2024. The questionnaire included 23 items about various aspects of maintenance of certification, physician burnout and demographics. Three open-ended questions regarding the pros and cons of MOC and recommendations for improvement were also included.

Background: Chronic pain affects over 25% of U.S. adults and is a leading cause of disability. Mindfulness meditation (MM) is a nonpharmacologic approach to manage pain and improve well-being. Despite mounting evidence supporting its efficacy, MM remains underutilized in medical practice. Understanding physicians' engagement with MM and the barriers they face can inform strategies for integration into clinical care. This study assessed physicians' attitudes toward MM, including barriers to practice and their likelihood of recommending it to patients.

Interprofessional education (IPE) is an important component of health science training. Ensuring all students have access to necessary information prior to, during, and following simulation-enhanced IPE (Sim-IPE) activities is imperative to ensure a beneficial learning environment and student engagement. Ensuring access to necessary materials can be difficult due to differences in educational resources between institutions. This manuscript will assess the feasibility, acceptability, and satisfaction of using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) as an educational tool for a Sim-IPE activity. OBJECTIVE: In 2015, a transition was initiated among the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM), resulting in a single accrediting body for residencies and fellowships as of 2020. This study aims to elucidate whether this had an impact on osteopathic students' matching into general surgery residencies, integrated surgery residencies, and surgical fellowships.

Assessing Social Determinants Of Health Training In Medical Education: A Literature Review Using Kirkpatrick’S Model, Surya Namboodiri, Chelsea Chang, Roque Mifuji Lira

Background: Social determinants of health (SDOH) training is a critical component of medical education, equipping physicians to address factors such as economic stability, education, and health care access. Kirkpatrick’s model categorizes training outcomes into four levels—Reaction, Learning, Behavior, and Results—offering a validated framework to assess impact. Despite its importance, the evaluation of SDOH curricula often focuses on lower-level outcomes, such as learner satisfaction and knowledge assessment, with limited emphasis on behavioral change and patient outcomes.

Background: Nationally, attrition rates in surgical specialties have been reported to be as high as 20-26%. As of 2019, women comprised only 6.5% of the 29,613 orthopedic surgeons. Female residents showed significantly higher overall attrition rates compared to males (5.96% vs. 2.79%, p < 0.001), with unintended attrition nearly twice as high (2.09% vs. 1.01%, p < 0.001). Attrition can result from a wide array of variables, including sex, ethnicity, education, and background. The aim of this study was to evaluate the demographic and educational factors associated with career longevity beyond training among orthopedic surgeons, with a focus on identifying patterns of attrition in underrepresented groups.

Methods: Data from the Texas Medical Board Physician Database as of September 2024 was evaluated using Microsoft Excel. To determine length of practice, the date of license issuance was subtracted from the date of license expiration. Surgeons with license expirations after 2024 were excluded to maintain a focus on physicians that are no longer practicing. Entries …

Introduction: Patient and student satisfaction are increasingly important factors in healthcare and higher education, respectively. While satisfaction is important, it may not always correlate directly with outcomes, academic performance, or long-term professional accomplishments. Researchers aim to investigate the relationship between student satisfaction and measures of student success. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed data from 215 students over five PA student cohorts for correlations between student satisfaction and academic performance in core clinical medicine courses, program GPA, and PANCE scores. Background: High-quality intraoperative photography is vital for treatment planning, patient counseling, and surgical education. Inconsistencies in image quality are prevalent in orthopedic literature due to the absence of formalized criteria specific to orthopedic settings. In 2014, "Medical Photography: Principles for Orthopedics" introduced guidelines intending to standardize protocols for capturing clinical images. By comparing the quality of images taken both before and after these proposed guidelines, this project aims to evaluate whether this has influenced a trend toward standardization and consistency in intraoperative orthopedic photography.

Background: Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral illness, is endemic in tropical regions, including border regions like the Rio Grande Valley while often self-limited, severe presentations such as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome highlight its challenges and complexities. Purpose: There is a lack of comprehensive histology resources in existing Anki decks, leading students to individually create their own flashcards, which increases preparation time and may compromise accuracy. With faculty guidance, this project aims to develop a set of histology flashcards on the Anki platform to help medical students improve performance on the USMLE Step exams and practical assessments. In 2013, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) implemented Milestones 1.0 as a tool to assess trainee progress towards readiness for independent practice. Critiques of Milestones 1.0 suggested its complexity made the tool difficult to quickly understand and implement in a standardized fashion. This was particularly challenging among subspecialties due to inherent differences in clinical practice settings and make-up of procedural and patient care needs. Background: Less than 7% of medical students publish research articles. Factors contributing to delays in student engagement include perceived time limitations, lack of enthusiasm, poor facilities, and insufficient supervisory support. Although project-based programs can improve research abilities, they frequently do not correspond with the program's goals, pedagogical approaches, and assessment standards and, worse, are not linked with other teaching modules.
