Keys For Success When Using An Integrative Interprofessional Teaching Model: A Synergistic Approach, Hon-Vu Quang Duong, Nina Marcellus, Sandip Thanki 2025 Nevada State University

Keys For Success When Using An Integrative Interprofessional Teaching Model: A Synergistic Approach, Hon-Vu Quang Duong, Nina Marcellus, Sandip Thanki

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This study presents a longitudinal analysis of the qualitative experiences and quantitative outcomes associated with integrative, interdisciplinary teaching in the context of a specific nursing course, Pathophysiology (NURS 337), at a public, 4-year, state college (now university). Spanning an 8-year period, from 2014–2022, the research compares two distinct student cohorts: one exposed to collaborative interdisciplinary teaching methods, the other to traditional non-collaborative instructional approaches. The findings reveal that integrative, interdisciplinary teaching yielded significant benefits across multiple metrics. Notably, integrative, interdisciplinary teaching contributed to a more normalized distribution of grades, higher student retention rates, and an elevated cumulative GPA at the …

Rehearsing For Future Scholarship: A Literature Review Elective For Medical Students, Jenny Mills, Sarah Keil 2025 Belmont University

Rehearsing For Future Scholarship: A Literature Review Elective For Medical Students, Jenny Mills, Sarah Keil

Library Faculty Scholarship

Objective This poster presents a four-week literature review elective for medical students, co-designed and co-taught by library and medical faculty. We will share course materials, including session topics, readings, assignments, and feedback from both instructors and students.

Methods The elective was first offered in June 2025 and taught by two library faculty members, one basic science faculty member, and one clinical faculty member. Five rising second year medical students enrolled, working in two groups to develop focused research questions and complete review protocols within the four-week time frame. Instruction emphasized literature review methodology, particularly systematic approaches applicable across review types. …

Educating Future Nurse Practitioners And Physician Associates On Pretreatment Of Swallowing In Head And Neck Cancer, Hannah M. Berk, Erin L. O'Bryan, Imran Musaji, Carly A. Thomas, Jamie Harrington

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Head and neck cancer treatment frequently results in long-term severe swallowing deficits, often requiring feeding tube dependency. Patients who have completed swallowing exercise programs before and during cancer treatment experienced more positive swallowing outcomes, but most patients are not referred for swallowing intervention early enough in their care to prevent long-term deficits. This student research project aimed to measure health profession students’ knowledge of swallowing pretreatment for head and neck cancer patients and to investigate the impact of an educational module developed and presented by a Communication Sciences and Disorders graduate student to improve knowledge and awareness of this clinical …

The Role Of Interprofessional Education In Preparing The Next Generation Of Pre-Service Professionals: A Pilot Study, Shannon Wade Salley, Jennifer Cuchna, Tammy M. Hines, Karla Collins, Jennifer Hutchinson 2025 Longwood University

The Role Of Interprofessional Education In Preparing The Next Generation Of Pre-Service Professionals: A Pilot Study, Shannon Wade Salley, Jennifer Cuchna, Tammy M. Hines, Karla Collins, Jennifer Hutchinson

Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders

Interprofessional practice is a growing expectation in health and human services professions, as is collaboration between education professionals, to bring the best care and services to clients and students. Future professionals need to learn about other professions and be taught how to work with others as members of an interprofessional team. This mixed-methods pilot study examined the impact of an interprofessional education experience on future education, health, and human services professionals, including speech language pathologists, teachers, and counselors. Event participants showed an increased understanding of the roles of other professionals and recognition of the benefits of working in an interprofessional …

Orthostatic Hypotension In Older Adults And Its Economic Impact On The Healthcare System: A Systematic Literature Review, Olushola E. Ilogho, Jennifer Broyles, Viet Le, Denise Rizzolo 2025 University of Lynchburg

Orthostatic Hypotension In Older Adults And Its Economic Impact On The Healthcare System: A Systematic Literature Review, Olushola E. Ilogho, Jennifer Broyles, Viet Le, Denise Rizzolo

Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science

ABSTRACT

Orthostatic Hypotension (OH) has been shown to lead to poor quality of life, falls, and death. Literature suggests that falls from OH may be preventable, therefore opportunities to reduce its associated cost to the healthcare system exist. This literature review aims to evaluate the importance of diagnosing and treating OH in older adult patients. OH is the drop in blood pressure upon changing to an upright position. This acute hemodynamic drop in blood pressure causes hypoperfusion in the brain, leading to dizziness, syncope, and falls. An extensive literature search for publications in PubMed and Cumulative Index in Nursing and …

America's Physician Shortage: Look To Pas, Not Abroad, Raquelle Akavan, Laura Juarez 2025 University of Lynchburg

America's Physician Shortage: Look To Pas, Not Abroad, Raquelle Akavan, Laura Juarez

Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science

The United States has long addressed physician shortages by recruiting international medical graduates (IMGs), often from low- and- middle income countries. This "brain drain" deprives already fragile health systems and adds to worldwide health disparities. New state legislation has eased licensing standards for IMGs and generated variable training pathways creating patient safety risk in underserved groups. At the same time, the U.S. has a sustainable, highly trained, and proven ready workforce: physician associates (PA). Created in the 1960s to address physician shortages, PAs undergo intensive graduate-degree education, uniform clinical education, and national certification on par with physicians. Nonetheless, obsolete laws …

Two-Staged Lateral Based Thenar Flap For Fingertip Injuries Of Index And Middle Fingers –A Functional Outcome, Srinivas Pamarthi, Pooja Mannela, Saiphanindra Malladhi

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine

Introduction:

Fingertip injuries, particularly of the index and middle fingers, account for major accidents which occur in industrial regions due to machinery usage, causing sharp cuts or crush injuries of the tips. The treatment of these fingertip injuries previously was amputation and stump closure. As the advancement of flaps occurred, there came many flaps mentioned to treat these tip injuries. Many of these flaps had failed to provide the same functional and aesthetic outcome following surgery. This study aims at assessing laterally-based thenar flap for tip injuries of index and middle fingers for its aesthetic and functional outcome.

Methods:
