Food insecurity is a significant problem in Vermont affecting over 10% of the population in 2016. Access to nutrition is an important social determinant of health with long term implications for our communities. In order to increase awareness of existing infrastructure to reduce food insecurity in Rutland County, a resource guide was created with information about local food pantries, community dinners, and assistance obtaining 3SquaresVT benefits.

Alcohol Support Groups: Alternative To The Aa Model, Tim Fields
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Alcohol abuse accounts for 88,000 deaths and $249 billion annually in the United States. At this point there is not a great evidence based model for the best form of group support. While AA and the twelve step model is the most frequently used group format, it has many limitation especially in small Vermont towns. This proposes an alternative model designed to work well in smaller communities.

Prostate Cancer Screening Guidelines: Providing Patient Education, Michael Burton
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
The United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) is planning to update their prostate cancer PSA screening guidelines to a category C from category D grade. This could potentially lead to confusion among both providers and patients as they have become accustomed to the previous guidelines and there has always been much discussion among providers about whether to offer the test. This project seeks to provide information to patients about the upcoming change so that they are more informed and able to better participate in discussion with their doctor about the pros and cons of PSA testing.

Faculty To Faculty Incivility In Iowa Nursing Education Programs, 2018 University of Northern Iowa
Faculty To Faculty Incivility In Iowa Nursing Education Programs, Candace Chihak
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Uncivil work relationships are common in several professions, including nursing. Experiences of incivility within nursing education have been well described in the relationships between students, students to faculty, and faculty to students, however, there is less empirical evidence on the presence of incivility between nursing faculty. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the perception of incivility in faculty-to-faculty relationships in nursing education. Additionally, this paper will look for relationships between nurse educators and their intentions to stay within higher education. Methods: Nursing faculty from one Midwest state were surveyed utilizing the Workplace Incivility Civility Survey (WICS). Additionally, …

Nutrition Label Accuracy And The Theory Of Triadic Influence: The Impact Of Knowledge On Healthy Food Choices In A Predominantly Hispanic Sample, Mosi Staudt Dane'el
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Unhealthy food choices and the outcomes of those choices are a significant concern in the United States. Multiple governmental agencies recommend using nutrition labels to promote healthier food choices. This study investigated this claim using the theory of triadic influence to examine the efficacious use of nutrition labels on food choices. The theory of triadic influence presents a model of variables that affect food choice, including knowledge pathways on which this study focuses. Within the model, we expected increased scores on two measures of health knowledge to predict nutrition label understanding, which predict healthy food attitudes. Next, we expected that …
Outpatient Management Of Mood Disorders By The Family Physician, 2018 UVM Larner College of Medicine
Outpatient Management Of Mood Disorders By The Family Physician, Elizabeth O'Neill
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
It is well-known that the demand for psychiatric care in the US is higher than the supply of psychiatric clinical providers. Vermont, in particular, has a paucity of psychiatric providers and there are minimal providers in Chittenden County and the greater Burlington area. Many patients with psychiatric conditions are inconsistently managed given the lack of available outpatient providers, particularly for patients on Medicaid. Often times, patients suffer from psychiatric episodes that require an emergency department visit or inpatient stay, and they may leave the hospital with an outpatient medication regimen that can then be carried out by a primary care …

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic. Despite the promise of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in reducing HIV transmission risk, barriers for uptake and persistence exist. We sought to identify whether GBM in a nationwide cohort who have not yet initiated PrEP (n = 906) would prefer to get PrEP-related care from a primary care provider (PCP) compared to a specialist clinic or provider. We then sought to identify their level of interest and factors associated with preference for using home-based PrEP services (i.e., HB-PrEP), defined to participants as conducting …
Debriefing With Reflection: Best Practice For Learning In Simulation In Pre-Licensure Nursing Education, 2017 Seton Hall University
Debriefing With Reflection: Best Practice For Learning In Simulation In Pre-Licensure Nursing Education, Mary Mcdermott
Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects
Purpose: The purpose of this project was intended to transform the outdated method of conducting debrief after simulation by implementing a good judgment model and integrating the concept of “advocacy-inquiry.” This implementation was expected to reduce demoralizing and anxiety producing debrief experiences and improve student reflection and learning in order for students to more deliberately link theory with practice.
Significance: The debrief is often recognized as the component of simulation in which the most effective learning occurs. It is the time when students are provided opportunity to reflect on thoughts, actions and behaviors. Unfortunately, many nursing students often experience undue …

Cancer Survivorship: Promoting A Lifetime Of Health, Janelle Coleman-Smith
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Introduction Cancer survivors can face post-cancer treatment effects that need addressing throughout their care trajectory. Education provided to stakeholders and patients will be beneficial in preventing fragmented care, increasing patient satisfaction, and expanding ongoing supportive clinical survivorship care. Methods An adapted Dr. Joanne Lester survivorship needs survey was given to n=7 post-cancer treatment patients within a northern California cancer patient advisory committee. The survey results were analyzed to identify common underserved chronic long-term survivorship needs. Based on the data, an evidence-based educational component was included within a booklet to enhance future survivorship care. Additional surveys were sent to stakeholders …
Using Social Narratives To Improve The Healthcare Experiences Of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, 2017 James Madison University
Using Social Narratives To Improve The Healthcare Experiences Of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Margaret Spindel
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience significant emotional stress when they visit a healthcare provider. The focus of this research project was to explore the use of social narratives to help reduce stress associated with this environment. Social narratives are short stories designed to walk a child through a potential situation that they will encounter, that they may not be familiar with, or that they are not currently handling properly. As part of an initial literature review, evidence for the need for additional intervention in the healthcare setting for children with ASD was established. Continuing literature review then …
