Nutrition, A Tenet Of Lifestyle Medicine But Not Medicine?, Leigh A. Frame
Clinical Research and Leadership Faculty Publications
Nutrition is a foundation of health and one of six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine. The importance of nutrition in clinical care is now widely recognized by health care professionals and the public. However, clinicians are not comfortable counselling their patients on nutrition due to inadequate or lack of training, leaving a significant need in patient care. This gap can be closed with evidence-based curricula in medical schools and in the trainings of other health care professionals. This communication presents the current state of nutrition knowledge in health care, emphasizing nutrition education for physicians, and presents a model of how pre- …

The Contribution Of Dysphagia To Acute Stroke Morbidity And Mortality In Nigeria: A Prospective Study, O O. Olajide, Philip Adebayo, F T. Taiwo, M O. Owolabi, A Ogunniyi
Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa
Background:
The assessment of time-trend morbidity and mortality in acute stroke is critical to clinical policy decisions and resource allocation.
Objectives:
To determine the prevalence of dysphagia in acute stroke and the impact of dysphagia on short term stroke outcome (30 days post-stroke).
Methods:
This was a prospective longitudinal study. Bedside screening for dysphagia modified Rankin score (MRS) and Barthel Index (BI) were performed on acute stroke patients on day 1, day 7, day 14 and day 30 after stroke to determine the frequency of dysphagia. Patients with dysphagia were then compared with age- and gender-matched controls (stroke patients without …

Testicular Torsion Induced By Epididymo-Orchitis: A Case Report, Ali Akbar Zehri, Allyzain Ismail, Philip Adebayo, Authar Ali
Faculty of Health Sciences, East Africa
Introduction and importance:
Acute scrotum is considered a urological emergency requiring early intervention depending on the cause. There are multiple causes of acute scrotum with testicular torsion being the most feared as delayed treatment leads to testicular loss. However, differentiating between epididymo-orchitis and torsion can be very difficult.
Case presentation: We present a case of an 18-year old male patient with 2 separate episodes of acute scrotum. He had epididymo-orchitis as the first presentation followed by testicular torsion 5 days later. To our knowledge this is the first case of testicular torsion secondary to epididymo-orchitis.
Clinical discussion: Differentiating between epididymo-orchitis …

A Low-Cost Priapism Detumescence Simulator For Emergency Medicine Residents., Zach Hampton, Nickolas Meier, John Casey
Medical Education Articles
INTRODUCTION: Ischemic priapism is an emergent condition requiring immediate intervention. However, the incidence is estimated to be very low. Given the low incidence of this pathology, some emergency medicine residents do not have the opportunity to perform needle aspiration, the critical procedure to achieve detumescence. We sought to fill this void by creating low-cost, high-fidelity trainers for emergency medicine resident procedural competency.
METHODS: Using items obtained online and through our hospital's simulation department, we created a low-cost priapism trainer from previously described literature. Residents completed a lecture, lab, and short post-course survey regarding helpfulness, realism, prior procedure experience, and future …

Presence Of Orthopedic Residency Decreases Emergency Physician's Confidence In Orthopedic Procedures., Eric Blazar, Bernard Jones, Babak Behgam
Medical Education Articles
INTRODUCTION: At present, there exists no standard orthopedic training for emergency medicine (EM) residency programs. Varying residency environments including but not limited to volume, acuity, and competing residency programs will dictate the number of orthopedic procedures a resident is exposed to, ultimately dictating a graduate's comfort level with orthopedic procedures. Our study set out to investigate further whether training alongside an orthopedic residency affects an attending physician's perceived procedural comfort.
METHODS: This is a cohort study utilizing a 14-question survey distributed to an online community of EM physicians to examine the relationship between training at a residence program alongside orthopedic …

Background: Social media is ubiquitous as a tool for collaboration, networking, and dissemination. However, little is known about use of social media platforms by pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship programs.
Objective: We identify and characterize pulmonary and critical care fellowship programs using Twitter and Instagram, as well as the posting behaviors of their social media accounts.
Methods: We identified all adult and pediatric pulmonary, critical care medicine (CCM), and combined pulmonary and critical care medicine (PCCM) programs in the United States using the Electronic Residency Application Service. We searched for Twitter profiles for each program between January 1, 2018, …

Master of Occupational Therapy Student Critically Appraised Topics
The purpose of our critically appraised topic is to synthesize the best current evidence regarding interventions that would be effective in reducing delirium in patients with COVID-19 in the acute care setting. The final portfolio contains a total of five research articles. Study designs include three randomized controlled trials, one non randomized controlled trial, and one quasi-experimental quantitative design. All studies relate directly to interventions within the OT scope of practice and were implemented in the acute care setting. Due to limited research on the novel coronavirus, these findings apply to critically ill patients but are not specific to patients …
