Design, Usability, And Acceptability Of A Needs-Based, Automated Dashboard To Provide Individualized Patient-Care Data To Pediatric Residents, Julia K W Yarahuan, Huay-Ying Lo, Lanessa Bass, Jeff Wright, Lauren M Hess
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pediatric residency programs are required by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to provide residents with patient-care and quality metrics to facilitate self-identification of knowledge gaps to prioritize improvement efforts. Trainees are interested in receiving this data, but this is a largely unmet need. Our objectives were to (1) design and implement an automated dashboard providing individualized data to residents, and (2) examine the usability and acceptability of the dashboard among pediatric residents.
METHODS: We developed a dashboard containing individualized patient-care data for pediatric residents with emphasis on needs identified by residents and residency leadership. To …

BACKGROUND: The pandemic poses challenges for in-person procedural skills training. We developed a virtual module for teaching hands-on tracheostomy skills.
OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate a virtual module prototype grounded in deliberate practice using tracheostomy change as an example.
METHODS: After identifying desirable features of a virtual module by surveying stakeholders, we designed a prototype using VoiceThread, a multimedia-based collaborative learning platform. We created an asynchronous module accessible to learners for repeated skill practice and for video upload of individual performance on a tracheostomy task trainer using personal devices. This virtual module provided a four-step coaching (demonstration, deconstruction, formulation, and …

The Important Factors Applicants Consider When Choosing A Residency: A Survey Study, Amber Alexandria Quave, Hossein Akhondi, Napatkamon Ayutyanont
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Background
While medical school graduates compete to get matched into the best residency programs, programs also compete to attract the best applicants. The applicant’s decision to rank their programs of interest is determined by several factors, many of which are not always apparent.
Method
This study aimed to evaluate significant factors involved in an applicant’s residency program selection. A 12-question survey was sent between June 2020 and September 2020 to all first-year internal medicine residents in the United States (US) through an online national database of residencies using the Survey Monkey platform. We asked them to rank the most significant …

Introduction
After being removed from patient care due to equipment shortages, medical students and new residents around the United States are returning to clinical medicine/acute care settings as the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic continues. We hypothesize that trainees returned with increased preparedness and had better access to and knowledge of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Methods
Anonymous online surveys were distributed via snowball sampling to medical students and residents performing clinical duties in the United States. Respondents completed self-assessments for preparedness regarding PPE use, access to PPE and COVID-19 testing, and access to COVID-19 positive patients. Group comparisons were conducted using chi-square …

'Analogy-Based Comprehensive Diabetes Education' (Abcde) Improves Glycemic Control Of Diabetic Patients In An Underserved Population: Results Of A Retrospective Chart Analysis, Rajagopal V Sekhar
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Diabetes is the leading global cause for blindness, kidney failure and amputations. Preventing these complications requires optimal glycemic control, and it is imperative that diabetic patients understand the fundamental concepts of diabetes care. Although patients attend formal diabetes education classes, many do not comprehend basic concepts of diabetes, and are often noncompliant with diet, exercise and medications. A novel approach termed 'analogy-based comprehensive diabetes education' (ABCDE) was developed to educate HIV-patients with diabetes about basic concepts of diabetes care. The object of this manuscript is to report the results of a retrospective chart review on the impact of ABCDE on …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Wrist wraps are often ergogenically employed by competitive powerlifters to improve bench press performance, but several product-specific variations may impact any potential benefits. Moreover, the prevalence of athletic wrist wrap use is hitherto undescribed. PURPOSE: to characterize the pervasiveness of wrist wrap use amongst competitive powerlifters with regards to style (flexible [F] or stiff [S]), length, and tightness amongst competitive powerlifters. METHODS: Powerlifters (n = 70; 27±6y) who competed in the last two years were randomly recruited at sanctioned meets across the USA. After providing consent and following a 5-minute seated rest, participant wrist wrap use descriptive data (wrap style …

Maintenance Of Muscle Size And Function Following In-Season Training Of Division I Football Athletes, Sofia Guerrero, Lyric Richardson, Amy Reira, Emma Bozarth, Micheal Luera
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
During in-season training for collegiate athletes, there are fewer metabolically demanding resistance training sessions compared to other seasons of the programmed macrocycle. The shift of training duration and intensity for the in-season mesocycle may hinder an athlete’s ability to maintain gains from prior training cycles. In-season training commonly focuses on maintaining muscle mass and reducing the probability of atrophy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the potential adaptations following in-season training on muscle size and function in Division I (DI) athletes METHODS: Fifteen DI football athletes (mean ± sd; age, 20 ± 2 years; height, 189.6 ± …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The COVID-19 pandemic created a situation that abruptly altered the life of nearly every individual, forcing them to adjust their daily habits. Adults who regularly engaged in daily physical activity, either as recreational, collegiate, or professional athletes prior to lockdowns had to subsequently adapt and change their training regimens. PURPOSE: To determine which characteristics (age, sex, education level, socioeconomic status, primary endurance sport, whether the athlete is being coached or following a training program, and prior competition medaling) of recreational, collegiate, and professional endurance athletes were associated with training changes due to COVID-19 safety restrictions. METHODS: A cross-sectional …
