Does An Educational Intervention For Registered Nurses Improve Comprehension And Accuracy Of Scoring The Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome Tool On Newborns?, Michelle Porter
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
This study aims to prove that improved comprehension of the Neonatal Abstinence Scoring Tool on neonates born to mothers with addiction will decrease the length of stay and decrease medical interventions. The Finnegan Neonatal Abstinence Scoring Tool consists of 21 questions with different symptoms, each associated with a number. This scoring is compared to determine the degree of learning or increase in knowledge after the educational presentation. Participants (N= 16) were recruited through a convenience sampling of registered nurses working at an acute care hospital in Northwest Arkansas on a Women’s and Children’s department. The participants completed a …

Using Digital Storytelling To Assess Patient Experience With Management Of Diabetes In Everyday Life (Model) Study Intervention, Arati Joshi
Longitudinal Scholar's Project
African Americans are disproportionately affected by obesity-associated diabetes compared to their White counterparts. While social determinants of health may contribute to their poor health outcomes, studies have shown that pragmatic primary care-based interventions can be effective in improving the management of obesity-associated diabetes. The Management of Diabetes in Everyday Life (MODEL) is a pragmatic randomized comparative effectiveness trial of three approaches (health coaching, text-messaging, and enhanced usual care) to supporting medically underserved African American patients with uncontrolled diabetes in improving their self-care decisions. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of the MODEL program participation on the …

The Parkinson’s Wellness Project is an 8-part educational video series created by Samantha Stevenson, a student in Belmont University’s Doctorate Program in Occupational Therapy. Purpose: This project was created to benefit all persons with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their care partners who attend Rocksteady Boxing (RSB) in Franklin/Nashville, TN. Methodology: The student conducted research to identify the salient issues experienced by people living with PD. The issues were then synthesized into 8 separate categories including the following: facial expression, mental health, sexual health, self-care, sleep, diet and nutrition, meditation, and postural alignment. Reducing Pediatric Procedural Pain Using Virtual Reality, Emily Davis, Carmen Bandy
Scholars Week
Above all else, children require stability in their lives in order to develop a healthy perspective of the world. Feelings of instability can come from something as small as a change in schools. In the practice of pediatric medicine it is especially important to avoid these feelings of instability, which can lead children to develop healthcare-anxiety. Healthcare settings can be exceptionally emotionally taxing to children, because the children have a complete lack of control over their environment. This lack of control combined with fear and potentially pain can be incredibly distressing. While it is easy to disregard a child’s anxiety …

Building First‑Year Medical Students’ Skills In Finding, Evaluating, And Visualizing Health Information Through A “Debunking Medical Myths” Curricular Module, Katherine Akers, Ella Hu, Narmeen Rehman, Ho Jun Yun, Jacob Hoofman, Rachel Monconduit, Jennifer Mendez
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
To provide an online service learning opportunity for medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic, medical faculty and librarians developed and implemented a “Debunking Medical Myths” module in which students learned to search for emerging medical literature, evaluate evidence, and use that evidence to create an infographics debunking a COVID-19-related myth for a non-medical audience. The resultant infographics are visually appealing and designed to make complex health information easy to understand. The module was well-received by students, who demonstrated a nuanced understanding of the use of infographics to convey health information, and students’ work was evaluated highly by community members.

Healthcare Simulation: A Key To The Future Of Medical Education - A Review, Omair Ayaz, Faisal Wasim Ismail
Medical College Documents
Aim: Simulation originates from its application in the military and aviation. It is implemented at various levels of healthcare education and certification today. However, its use remains unevenly distributed across the globe due to misconception regarding its cost and complexity and to lack of evidence for its consistency and validity. Implementation may also be hindered by an array of factors unique to the locale and its norms. Resource-poor settings may benefit from diverting external funds for short-term simulation projects towards collaboration with local experts and local material sourcing to reduce the overall cost and achieve long-term benefits. The recent shift …
