Intraoperative Imaging In Orthopedic Settings: An Assessment Of Changes In Adherence To Imaging Guidelines, Emmanuel Franco, Tabitha Abraham, Zayd Ayas, Frank Gerold
Research Symposium
Background: High-quality intraoperative photography is vital for treatment planning, patient counseling, and surgical education. Inconsistencies in image quality are prevalent in orthopedic literature due to the absence of formalized criteria specific to orthopedic settings. In 2014, "Medical Photography: Principles for Orthopedics" introduced guidelines intending to standardize protocols for capturing clinical images. By comparing the quality of images taken both before and after these proposed guidelines, this project aims to evaluate whether this has influenced a trend toward standardization and consistency in intraoperative orthopedic photography.
Methods: To assess quality differences in orthopedic images before and after the 2014 guidelines, 60 intraoperative …

Redefining Possibilities: A Template For Mission-Based Medical School Innovation, Yossef Alsabawi, Elias Arellano, John M. Gaddis, Tyler Torres, Dominic Chau-Zanetti, Victor Espinoza
Research Symposium
Background: Small, mission-based medical schools play a vital role in shaping future healthcare providers by offering meaningful and unique opportunities for students to learn patient-centered care. However, these institutions often face challenges when compared to larger, research-intensive universities. Specifically, they tend to be less research-oriented and are limited in their ability to provide early exposure to diverse medical subspecialties. Traditionally, these limitations have been viewed as institutional challenges requiring top-down solutions. This study seeks to challenge that perspective by demonstrating that student-led initiatives can serve as innovative, cost-effective, and impactful strategies to overcome these barriers. Additionally, this research aims to …

Research Symposium
Background: Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral illness, is endemic in tropical regions, including border regions like the Rio Grande Valley while often self-limited, severe presentations such as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome highlight its challenges and complexities. This report describes an atypical dengue case with severe hematological manifestations, underscoring the diagnostic challenges and the importance of early recognition, multidisciplinary evaluation, and evidence-based management.
Case Presentation: A 22-year-old Hispanic female with no significant past medical history presented to the ED with hematemesis and fever following her travel to Monterrey, Mexico. Initial symptoms included high fever (107.6°F), chills, diarrhea, vomiting, …

Enhancing Medical Education: Histology Identification Anki Cards For Improved Learning And Exam Performance, Daniel Flores, Jihoo Woo, Blake Martin, Russell Wiggins, Xiaoqian Fang
Research Symposium
Purpose: There is a lack of comprehensive histology resources in existing Anki decks, leading students to individually create their own flashcards, which increases preparation time and may compromise accuracy. With faculty guidance, this project aims to develop a set of histology flashcards on the Anki platform to help medical students improve performance on the USMLE Step exams and practical assessments. By supplementing traditional study methods, this resource seeks to make histology learning more efficient and enhance retention through active recall and spaced repetition.
Description: The project focuses on creating Anki flashcards with histological images and concise explanations highlighting key identification …

Interactive Pathways To Musculoskeletal Proficiency: A Quality Improvement Project, Changho Yi, Sunand Kallumadanda, Jose Cano
Research Symposium
Introduction: Approximately 20-25%of patients visiting primary care present with musculoskeletal issues. 12%of board exam questions associated with musculoskeletal medicine. Only 12.5 hours are devoted to musculoskeletal education throughout the medical school curriculum • Only 5%of time allocated in MSK education during the residency(200hrs or 2 months). 77.39% of program directors believe that incoming PGY-1 residents lack sufficient MSK physical exam skills. This underscores the need for enhanced and more effective MSK training within family medicine programs.
Methods: 24 Family medicine resident at UTRGV MMC, 6 PGY-1, 8 PGY-2, 10 PGY-3. Survey and evaluation mini-test were done before intervention( 20 …

Developing And Implementing Pediatric Nephrology Milestones 2.0 As An Efficient Tool For Trainee Evaluation And Just-In-Time Feedback., Caroline V. Jackson, Rebecca Hjorten, Laura Edgar, Beatrice Goilav, Roshan P. George, Darcy K. Weidemann
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
In 2013, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) implemented Milestones 1.0 as a tool to assess trainee progress towards readiness for independent practice. Critiques of Milestones 1.0 suggested its complexity made the tool difficult to quickly understand and implement in a standardized fashion. This was particularly challenging among subspecialties due to inherent differences in clinical practice settings and make-up of procedural and patient care needs. In response, ACGME launched Milestones 2.0 in 2016 to harmonize competencies applicable to all subspecialties and develop new subspecialty specific competencies to facilitate precise feedback on subspecialty specific content domains. We describe how …

Murambadoro, Kevin Garcia Valdez, Chloe Harris, Meyer Maddox, Blake Martin, Nina Mourao, Elias Arellano Villanueva, Juan C. Lopez-Alvarenga, Chelsea Chang, Beatriz Tapia, Kelsey Baker, Bharathi S. Gadad
Research Symposium
Background: Less than 7% of medical students publish research articles. Factors contributing to delays in student engagement include perceived time limitations, lack of enthusiasm, poor facilities, and insufficient supervisory support. Although project-based programs can improve research abilities, they frequently do not correspond with the program's goals, pedagogical approaches, and assessment standards and, worse, are not linked with other teaching modules. There is scarce evaluation of longitudinal research integrated programs' effects on pre-clerkship students and faculty motivation, willingness, and skills. We designed a pre-clerkship longitudinal research module integrated with the concurrent modules to enhance scores on attitudes toward research (R-ATR), cognition …

Development And Evaluation Of An Interdisciplinary Rotation For Anesthesia Residents In Laryngology, Cole J. Homer, Kristy Carlson, Faye Haggar, Chris Bingcang, Andrea Dutoit, Tj Lockhart, Evan Ryan, Jayme Dowdall
EMET Projects
The medical fields of anesthesiology and otolaryngology (ENT – ears, nose, throat) are defined by overlapping clinical expertise as it relates to the management of airway issues. As a result of this shared clinical domain, interdisciplinary educational experiences provide an opportunity for collaboration and a broadened experience for resident physician learning. Our institution developed a two-week rotation in otolaryngology for first-year anesthesiology interns with the goal of utilizing interdisciplinary coaching to develop both technical and non-technical skills in airway management. The purpose of this project is to perform a formal evaluation of this rotation and share our training methods and …

EMET Projects
Background: The prevalence and impact of obesity on outcomes of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have not been well studied.
Objective: To examine the proportion of participants with obesity enrolled in RCTs of AF ablation and outcomes of ablation when subgroup analysis of participants with obesity were available.
Methods: We systematically searched PubMed and EMBASE for AF ablation RCTs published between January 1, 2015 to May 31, 2022. When body mass index (BMI) data were available, normal distribution was assumed and a z score was used to estimate the proportion of obesity. Results categorized by BMI or …
