Objective

With the increasing global burden of chronic diseases, there is the potential for conversational agents (CAs) to assist people in actively managing their conditions. This paper reviews different types of CAs used for chronic condition management, delving into their characteristics and the chosen study designs. This paper also discusses the potential of these CAs to enhance the health and well-being of people with chronic conditions.

Our 2019 summary of the history and future of digital health in behavioral medicine (Arigo in J Behav Med 8: 67-83, 2019) was one of the most highly cited articles in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine from 2010 to 2020; here, we provide an update on the opportunities and challenges we identified in 2019. Objective: Compare patient satisfaction between telemedicine and in-office visits and between providers post-operatively in an orthopedics setting with athletic trainers and physicians.

Design: Cross-sectional study

Methods: Patients from a Sports Medicine Clinic that received an orthopedic surgical intervention from March 2020-September 2021, and engaged in telemedicine, or an in-office visit post-operatively. Provider type included full-time athletic trainers, resident athletic trainers, physician (MD) resident/fellows, and float athletic trainers. Press-Ganey Patient Experience Surveys were collected at the time of follow up visit, with focus on items, “likelihood to recommend” and “how well staff worked together.”

Limited English Proficiency (LEP) is a barrier among Hispanic communities in accessing digital health tools including patient portals.¹

Patient portals provide patients with access to their electronic medical records. With portals, patients can schedule visits, message providers, check test results, and order medication refills, among other tasks.

Portal use has been shown to help patients better manage chronic diseases, enhance doctor-patient relationships, improve patient understanding and awareness of health status, and increase adherence to therapy.²

Despite interest in using patient portals, Spanish-speaking patients often struggle to use them due to low digital literacy.³

Many societies have aging populations. Getting older people to exercise can help them achieve a higher quality of life. Fitness tracking and social support can buttress that goal. This study tested the effects of fitness tracking and spousal influence on the physical activity of older adults. In a 2 (blinded vs. feedback) × 2 (individual vs. dyad) between-group experiment, 240 participants received a fitness tracker with a visible or blinded display. They participated in the three-month experiment either individually or with their spouses. Racial misclassification is a persistent issue among American Indian and Alaskan Natives who are grossly misrepresented in death. Training is needed for those who report race on death certificates (i.e., funeral directors) so that health and mortality data is accurately reported. An environmental scan of existing resources, literature, and training opportunities was completed in order to understand the current knowledge as well as gaps in racial reporting on death certificates.
