Affordable healthcare is often seen as a major social achievement, but maintaining low costs involves important trade-offs. Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) provides universal healthcare and relies heavily on generic medicines to expand access. This raises a central question: how can a system reduce the cost of healthcare while simultaneously generating new forms of inequality and tension within global pharmaceutical markets? This paper argues that Brazil’s cost-reduction strategy, particularly its reliance on generic medicines, improves affordability but also produces structural trade-offs between equitable access, quality of care, and incentives for pharmaceutical innovation.

Eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa, have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness, yet remain underrecognized relative to their severity and treatment burden. Because the period of peak onset aligns with the college years, institutions of higher education are uniquely positioned to play an important role in prevention, early identification, and referral to specialized care. However, limited research has examined how colleges and universities structure ED prevention and treatment resources. This quality improvement project aims to improve consistency of nurse compliance with daily chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) bathing in a local oncology unit to reduce the risk of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI’s). CLABSI’s remain a preventable source of patient morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, delayed cancer treatment, and increased healthcare costs, particularly among immunocompromised oncology patients who frequently require central venous access. Evidence supports daily CHG bathing as an effective infection prevention intervention; however, inconsistent completion and documentation across day and night shifts limit reliability in practice. Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are a problem, both globally and locally at this 20-bed pediatric cardiovascular ICU in Houston, TX. Bedside nursing staff had gaps in knowledge of central line policies and were often unaware of when dressings needed to be changed. This posed a significant concern, as this nosocomial infection is among the most life-threatening and costly complications in healthcare. Background

Sedation management in the ICU plays a key role in extubation readiness and post-extubation outcomes in mechanically ventilated patients. Although both propofol and dexmedetomidine are commonly used in critical care, there is limited evidence comparing their impact on early reintubation. This quality improvement (QI) project examined whether sedative choice was associated with reintubation within 48 hours of extubation.

Methods

By providing nursing education on a unit-specific, structured handoff communication framework (SBAR) and incorporating a procedure-specific handoff form for electrophysiology (EP) across pre-, intra-, and post-procedure units, this project aims to improve nurses’ perceptions of the handoff process and the effectiveness of handoff education across the periprocedural units. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that hospital noise levels remain below 35 decibels during the day and 30 decibels at night. However, ICU noise often exceeds 50-70 decibels. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) threaten patient safety, affecting about 1 in 25 hospitalized patients. Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is a significant contributor, impacting both high-risk groups and the general population. Proper hand hygiene is crucial for preventing CDI transmission. In the U.S., hospital-acquired CDI costs over $1.5 billion annually and causes nearly 500,000 cases and I15,000 deaths each year. California reported 3,526 CDI cases in acute care hospitals, with Loma Linda University hospitals accounting for 16 cases, or 23% of their health system's infection rate.

Research shows that psychological stress can impair immune function, reduce tissue regeneration, and prolong inflammation, all of which slow the healing process. It is important to explore how both acute and chronic stress affect different types of wounds, such as surgical incisions, pressure injuries, and diabetic ulcers.
