Evaluating The Effects Of A Noninvasive, Commercial-Grade Neurofeedback Technology And Mindfulness On Sleep Quality In Elite Athletes, Sydney Anne Hammit

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract Proper sleep is a vital element in the lives of elite athletes due to its effects on recovery, performance, and mental and emotional health. However, despite the importance of sleep quality, elite athletes are experiencing notable difficulties with both sleep quantity and quality. While sleep is necessary for all individuals, it is specifically essential for elite athletes. Sleep quality issues can be accompanied by both physical and psychological struggles, which is concerning for the population of elite athletes who are struggling with sleep quality at higher rates than the general population. Despite the increasing awareness of sleep quality struggles …

The Effect Of Gentle Yoga On Average Daily Step Count, Francesca D'Agrosa 2024 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

The Effect Of Gentle Yoga On Average Daily Step Count, Francesca D'Agrosa

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While walking is a widely accessible form of exercise that is highly effective at increasing overall wellness (Kadir et al., 2019; Zhao et al., 2015) and is a recommended form of physical activity for overweight and obese individuals, studies still indicate low step counts and levels of physical activity in people with obesity (Shultz et al., 2011). Sedentary overweight individuals may avoid walking for several reasons, including physiological and/or biomechanical factors that make walking more difficult. This study attempted to explore and address these avoidant behaviors by employing a single-case ABAB reversal design to implement bi-weekly gentle yoga sessions over …

The Effect Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Of The Dorsolateral Prefrontal Cortex On Muscle Fatigue Resistance, Taylie Thompson Liddell 2024 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) delivered to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) can increase endurance time in lower body cycling tasks. The purpose was to examine the effect of DLPFC-tDCS on the time to task failure (TTF) of a fatiguing contraction performed by hand muscles. The study used a double-blind, randomized, SHAM-controlled, crossover design. Participants completed two experimental sessions on separate days with a washout between sessions. All facets of the experiments were identical except the stimulation condition (DLPFC-tDCS or SHAM) that was given concurrent with the fatiguing contraction. The fatiguing contraction involved gripping a manipulandum with the index finger …

The Effects Of Instructed Task Prioritization On Dual-Task Cost In Older Adults, Megan D. Jones 2024 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

The Effects Of Instructed Task Prioritization On Dual-Task Cost In Older Adults, Megan D. Jones

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Concurrently performing motor and cognitive tasks, also known as dual-tasking (DT), is a daily activity being shown to produce decrements in gait and cognitive performance in older adults (OA) (Bootsma-van der Wiel et al., 2003; CDC, 2023; Kenny et al., 2017). Determining if OAs can cognitively flex attention allocation between motor and cognitive tasks during DT activities offers insight into how to educate older adults on improving activities of daily life (Della Sala et al., 1995; Mac-Auliffe et al., 2021; Montero-Odasso et al., 2012). Purpose: To evaluate changes in DTC in older adults during DT walking with instructed task prioritization …

The Impact Of One Night Of Sleep Restriction On Perception Of Subsequent Aerobic Exercise Performance, Erin G. Meier 2024 James Madison University

The Impact Of One Night Of Sleep Restriction On Perception Of Subsequent Aerobic Exercise Performance, Erin G. Meier

Senior Honors Projects, 2020-current

Introduction: Previous research has established that poor sleep quality negatively impacts aerobic exercise performance. A majority of that research has examined extreme sleep disruption like complete sleep deprivation or multiple nights of reduced sleep. Little research exists examining the effect of a singular night of sleep restriction (SR) on performance, and there is even less research on the associated perceptual feelings and outcomes from SR that may influence performance. Previous research from our laboratory has suggested that a single night of SR may impair performance, but did not account for sleep inertia or examine any perceptual factors. Therefore, the …

Single source transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been shown to increase the time to task failure (TTF) fatiguing contractions when applied to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and to the primary motor cortex (M1). The primary purpose was to determine whether dual source tDCS delivered bilaterally over the premotor cortices (pmc-tDCS) could increase the TTF of a fatiguing contraction performed by hand muscles. A double-blind, randomized, SHAM-controlled, crossover design was used for this study with each participant performing two experimental sessions held on separate days a week apart. The only difference between the two sessions was the type of …

A Comparison Of Spinal Reflex Function And Morphological Adaptations Of The Achilles Tendon Between Individuals Chronically Post-Stroke And Healthy Controls, Migi Contreras, Mira Seekins, Johanna Mendez, Trevor Diez 2024 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

A Comparison Of Spinal Reflex Function And Morphological Adaptations Of The Achilles Tendon Between Individuals Chronically Post-Stroke And Healthy Controls, Migi Contreras, Mira Seekins, Johanna Mendez, Trevor Diez

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Purpose/Hypothesis: The hallmark gait deviation in individuals with post-stroke hemiparesis is slow walking speed. Reduction in gait speed after stroke is influenced by decreased propulsive forces, which may likely be related to impaired spinal circuit function and spasticity of the paretic plantarflexors. Chronic muscle tone maladaptations in paretic ankle plantarflexors can result in altered Achilles tendon (AT) morphology, therefore leading to altered mechanical properties, force transmission capabilities and subsequent insufficient propulsive forces during walking. The purpose of this study is to characterize the chronic maladaptations in both the spinal Ia afferent loop excitability and AT morphology after stroke lesions in …

Sex Differences In Tibial Compression During Load Carriage Running On Challenging Surfaces, Eric Brian Francis 2024 Boise State University

Sex Differences In Tibial Compression During Load Carriage Running On Challenging Surfaces, Eric Brian Francis

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Tibial stress fracture is a common and destructive musculoskeletal issue for military, particularly female, personnel. Common military tasks, such as walking and running with body borne load, reportedly lead to lower limb biomechanics that elevate tibial stress fracture risk. Yet, it is unknown if similar increases are evident when running with heavy load – particularly over varied terrain personnel commonly navigate during military exercises. Purpose: This study sought to quantify vertical ground reaction force (GRF) and tibial compression while participants ran with body borne load over challenging surfaces, and determined whether they differed between sexes. Hypothesis: Participants will exhibit …

Learning To Roll: Characterizing Infant Rolling With Biomechanics, Danielle N. Siegel 2024 Boise State University

Learning To Roll: Characterizing Infant Rolling With Biomechanics, Danielle N. Siegel

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Motor skills, like rolling, are an important part of an infant’s cognitive and motor development by facilitating interactions with others and their surrounding environment. Additionally, an infant’s musculoskeletal and motor development is largely affected by their environment and in the U.S., infants spend a majority of their time in commercial infant products, including those at an incline. The biomechanical impacts of infants spending time at an incline is an understudied area, and almost 12,000 emergency room visits occur each year due to injuries involving commercial infant products. Therefore, the overall objective of this study was to understand how an infant’s …

The Alexander Technique Applied To Dance And The Choreographic Process: Freeing Physical Expression From Trauma-Based Tension, Julia Johnston 2024 Liberty University

The Alexander Technique Applied To Dance And The Choreographic Process: Freeing Physical Expression From Trauma-Based Tension, Julia Johnston

Senior Honors Theses

Ballet, contemporary, and modern dancers have expressed incurring trauma during their training and professional dance experiences; in a 2020 survey, 41% of professional dancers and 30% of ballet students reported experiencing or witnessing sexually inappropriate behavior in their respective workplaces and schools (DDP). This is just one example of a potential source of trauma for dancers. The physiological effects of trauma cause physical effects, creating tension in a dancer’s body. Dance relies on physical expression, the expression of thought and feeling through movement, to connect with the audience. Trauma-based tension inhibits a dancer’s range of physical expression and connection to …

Female Athlete Triad And Bone Stress Injuries, Amanda Nguyen 2024 Wayne State University

Female Athlete Triad And Bone Stress Injuries, Amanda Nguyen

Honors College Theses

The Female Athlete Triad is still an ongoing and developing diagnosis that analyzes low energy availability, and its impact on menstrual dysfunction and bone mineral density in women. Through researching I analyzed what the Female Athlete Triad was, how it impacts our body and performance, and specifically how it relates to bone stress injuries. It was found that athletes with low energy availability are more likely to develop menstrual dysfunction, leading to low bone mineral density due to the negative impacts that both low energy availability and menstrual dysfunction have on important hormones. With low bone mineral density and compensations …

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On Perceived Fatigue Of Collegiate Endurance Athletes, Quinn Murphy 2024 Bowling Green State University

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On Perceived Fatigue Of Collegiate Endurance Athletes, Quinn Murphy
