Does Race Matter? The Role Of Race In The Blood Lactate Levels Of Sub-Elite Runners., Nicole Azuogu 2013 University of Texas at Arlington

Does Race Matter? The Role Of Race In The Blood Lactate Levels Of Sub-Elite Runners., Nicole Azuogu

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Lactic Acid is a byproduct of anaerobic metabolism. In the absence of oxygen, pyruvate undergoes fermentation instead of entering into the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, which occurs during aerobic glycolysis. During fermentation, pyruvate is reduced to lactate. At about 50-70% of VO2max, there is a substantial increase in lactate accumulation, otherwise known as the Lactate threshold. At this work rate, energy is obtained from glycolysis. Glycolysis at high intensity exercise increases CO2 levels which in turn trigger an increase in ventilation and heart rate. This system is short lived and fatigue sets in quickly due to glycogen depletion, a decrease in …

Gait And Force Asymmetry Following Acl Injury, Cecilia Acuna 2013 University of Texas at Arlington

Gait And Force Asymmetry Following Acl Injury, Cecilia Acuna

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most injured ligament in the knee joint and is fundamental for rotational stability of the knee joint and to minimize stress. Tearing of the ACL usually occurs due to a pivot-deceleration motion or traumatic injury that causes hyperextension of the knee. ACL surgery attempts to restore normal function and stability of the knee. However research shows altered kinematic patterns post ACL reconstruction.

Choosing Actions, David A. Rosenbaum, Kate M. Chapman, Chase J. Coelho, Lanyun Gong, Breanna E. Studenka 2013 Pennsylvania State University

Choosing Actions, David A. Rosenbaum, Kate M. Chapman, Chase J. Coelho, Lanyun Gong, Breanna E. Studenka

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Actions that are chosen have properties that distinguish them from actions that are not. Of the nearly infinite possible actions that can achieve any given task, many of the unchosen actions are irrelevant, incorrect, or inappropriate. Others are relevant, correct, or appropriate but are disfavored for other reasons. Our research focuses on the question of what distinguishes actions that are chosen from actions that are possible but are not. We review studies that use simple preference methods to identify factors that contribute to action choices, especially for object-manipulation tasks. We can determine which factors are especially important through simple behavioral …

Gait Mechanics Are Different Between Healthy Controls And Patients With Multiple Sclerosis, Jessie M. Huisinga, Kendra K. Schmid, Mary Filipi, Nikolaos Stergiou 2013 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Gait Mechanics Are Different Between Healthy Controls And Patients With Multiple Sclerosis, Jessie M. Huisinga, Kendra K. Schmid, Mary Filipi, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Multiple sclerosis (MS) causes severe gait problems in relatively young individuals, yet there have been limited studies to quantitatively identify the specific gait parameters that are affected. The purpose of this study was to define any differences in biomechanical gait parameters between patients with MS and healthy controls. A total of 31 MS patients and 31 healthy controls were evaluated: joint torques and joint powers were calculated at the ankle, knee, and hip during the stance phase of gait. The self-selected walking velocity was used as a covariate in the analysis to ensure that group differences were not due to …

Design And Development Of A Stair Ascension Assistive Device For Transfemoral Amputees, Casey Michael Barbarino 2013 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Design And Development Of A Stair Ascension Assistive Device For Transfemoral Amputees, Casey Michael Barbarino

Master's Theses

Transfemoral amputees around the world experience increased difficulty in climbing stairs due to lack of muscle, balance, and other factors. The loss of a lower limb greatly diminishes the amount of natural force generation provided that is necessary to propel oneself up stairs. This study investigated possible solutions to the problem of stair ascension for transfemoral amputees by the means of designing and developing an externally attachable device to a prosthesis. The number of amputations from military service has greatly increased since 2008, which shows there is a clear need for assistive devices (Wenke, Krueger, & Ficke, 2012). With the …

Associations Between Alcohol Consumption And Fasting Blood Glucose In Young Adults, Julie Ann Lucca 2013 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Associations Between Alcohol Consumption And Fasting Blood Glucose In Young Adults, Julie Ann Lucca

Master's Theses

Current research shows moderate alcohol consumption is associated with decreased risk of diabetes and excessive consumption or binge drinking can cause insulin resistance and diabetes. In 2010, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United Statesand was responsible for significant health complications: blindness, kidney failure, and limb amputations, and is a large national economic burden. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) is a tool used to help diagnose diabetes. Abnormally high FBG, ≥100 mg/dl, is indicative of diabetes and pre-diabetes. Few studies have observed diabetic prevalence among young adults or college students. Studying young adults can help provide added …

The Practitioner's Corner: An Exploration Of Municipal Active Living Charter Development And Advocacy, M. Blair Evans, Alex J. Benson, Terry L. Mitchell, Jennifer Robertson-Wilson, Mark Eys

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Background: Numerous municipal active living-‐related charters have been adopted to promote physical activity in Canada throughout the past decade. Despite this trend, there are few published critical examinations of the process through which charters are developed and used.

Purpose: Thus, the purpose of this study was to establish greater understanding of active living charter development and advocacy.

Methods: Semi-‐structured interviews were conducted with eight primary contributors to different active living-‐related charters across Ontario, Canada. Interview questions explored participants’ experiences developing and advocating for an active living charter. Interviews were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding.

Results and Conclusions: Participants …

Residential Summer Camp: A New Venue For Nutrition Education And Physical Activity Promotion, Alison K. Ventura, Barry A. Garst 2013 Drexel University

Residential Summer Camp: A New Venue For Nutrition Education And Physical Activity Promotion, Alison K. Ventura, Barry A. Garst

Kinesiology and Public Health

Background

Millions of children attend residential summer camps each year. However, few studies have examined the potential of camps for obesity prevention efforts. Research in the domain of positive youth development has shown that camp programs as short as one week have both short- and long-term positive effects on self-esteem, self-efficacy and other youth outcomes. The objective of the present study was to highlight the potential of resident camps as promising venues for the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity behaviors in the children who attend.

Methods

Data for this study came from the American Camp Association 2007 Emerging …

Shoulder Muscle Activation Of Novice And Resistance Trained Women During Variations Of Dumbbell Press Exercises, Joshua Luczak, Andy Bosak, Bryan Riemann 2013 Armstrong Atlantic State University

Shoulder Muscle Activation Of Novice And Resistance Trained Women During Variations Of Dumbbell Press Exercises, Joshua Luczak, Andy Bosak, Bryan Riemann

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

Previous research has compared the effects of trunk inclination angle on muscle activation using barbells and Smith machines in men. Whether similar effects occur with the use of dumbbells or in women remains unknown. The purpose was to compare upper extremity surface electromyographical (EMG) activity between dumbbell bench, incline, and shoulder presses. Dominate arm EMG data were recorded for collegiate-aged female resistance trained individuals (n=12) and novice female resistance trained exercisers (n=12) from which average EMG amplitude for each repetition phase (concentric, eccentric) was computed. No significant differences were found between experienced and novice resistance trained individuals. For the upper …
