International Journal of Exercise Science 15(7): 1395-1417, 2022. Physical activity levels are low in individuals with chronic disease (e.g., obesity) and have worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. Purpose: Our pilot study tested a virtual exercise intervention for rural-dwelling adults with chronic disease from January-April 2021 for changes in mental health, physical fitness, and physical activity and for intervention fidelity. International Journal of Exercise Science 15(4): 1418-1429, 2022. Fitness-fatness index (FFI) is used to identify those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular events. It is measured as the ratio between an individual’s cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and waist-to-height ratio. Studies suggest that CRF and waist-to-height ratio are modifiable and can be improved by exercise. However, there is limited evidence surrounding a personalized approach to exercise prescription. Phase angle (PhA) is an index of cell membrane integrity and prognostic indicator of survival and quality of life in cancer survivors. The efficacy of exercise-based cancer rehabilitation programs (ExCR) on PhA is unknown. To assess the effect of ExCR on PhA in breast cancer survivors. International Journal of Exercise Science 15(3): 1430-1443, 2022. The present scoping review focused upon the functional benefits of hard martial arts training for older adults. The AXIS Critical Appraisal Tool was used to appraise all studies included in the review. A systematic literature search identified 265 papers via electronic database and ten papers from additional sources. Of these, six studies featuring 240 participants were included in the final scoping review. Of the included studies, three were randomized control trials and three were comparative studies with concurrent controls. Objective:

The main objective of this study was to examine the association between COVID-19 information search activities and vaccination intention.

Methods:

Cross-sectional data were collected using online surveys. Independent variables included COVID-19 information search on the (1) science of viral effects of COVID-19 on the body, (2) origin of COVID-19, (3) symptoms and outcomes, (4) transmission and prevention, (5) future outbreak, and (6) policies/procedures to follow. The outcome variable was vaccination intention. A multivariable regression analysis was conducted.

Results:

Background: The use of new total joint arthroplasty technologies, including patient-specific implants/instrumentation (PSI), computer-assisted (CA), and robotic-assisted (RA) techniques, is increasing. There is an ongoing debate regarding the value provided and potential concerns about conflicts of interest (COI).

Methods: PRISMA guidelines were followed. PubMed, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases were searched for total hip and knee arthroplasties, unicompartmental knee arthroplasties (UKA), PSI, CA, and RA. Bibliometric data, financial COI, clinical/functional scores, and patient-reported outcomes were assessed.

There is evidence in the literature to suggest that low back pain may change spine–pelvis coordination during activities of daily living. This study aimed to compare the variability of the spine– pelvis coordination during sit-to-stand in people with and without LBP. Ten healthy individuals with a history of LBP and ten individuals without history of LBP participated in this study. Division I cross country (XC) running has many factors that influence performance and is extremely difficult to predict. Consequently, coaches often struggle to identify performance potential in athletes. In this study, personal best race times, VO2max, triceps skinfold, and a series of counter movement jump assessments were performed by female (n=15) and male (n=17) NCAA XC runners to predict XC performance. Simple regression modeling identified 3200-m high school (HS) personal best (PB) time as best predictor for men’s 8-km performance (r = 0.85; p = 0.005, SEE = ± 0.65 min). Hericium erinaceus (HE), also known as Lion’s Mane mushroom, has been found to enhance cognition and metabolic flexibility in various animal models. To date however, only four studies exist in humans and none have evaluated the effects of HE on markers of metabolic flexibility or cognitive performance. A single-blind, placebo controlled, parallel-longitudinal study was used to determine the effects of HE on markers of metabolic flexibility and cognition. LGD-4033, a selective androgen receptor modulator, and MK-677, a growth hormone secretagogue, are becoming increasingly used amongst recreationally-active demographics. However, limited data exist describing their effects on health- and androgen-related biomarkers. The purpose of this case study is to report changes in body composition and biomarkers during and after continued co-administration of LGD-4033 and MK-677. We additionally aimed to examine muscular strength and intramuscular androgen-associated biomarkers relative to non-users. Objectives To examine differences in rural community children’s moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and participation in out-of-school activities from fall 2019 to fall 2020 and explore enacted PA opportunity modifications post initial COVID-19 disruption.

Design Mixed methods study using the validated Youth Activity Profile (YAP), administrator reports and stakeholder surveys and semistructured interviews.

Setting Children and community stakeholders from one rural US Great Plains community in the state of Nebraska were recruited.

Association Of Functional Movement Screen And Y-Balance Test Scores With Injury In Elite Fast-Pitch Softball Athletes, Xiujing Zhao

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of FMS and YBT composite scores with injury in elite female fast-pitch softball athletes. Thirty-eight participants completed pre-season FMS and YBT assessments. Injury data were collected on the next day of finishing the season. FMS composite scores were significantly lower for the injured group (13.5 ± 2.4) comparison to the non-injured group 16.9 ± 1.6) (p ≤ .001, d = 1.67). Injured status was associated with lower FMS scores (r = .61; p <.001). No differences existed in YBT-UQ (p =.67, d = .14) and YBT-LQ (p =.16, d =.50) composite score between the injured (UQ = 96.0 ± 5.9, LQ = 96.7 ± 8.2) and the non-injure (UQ = 97.1 ± 1.6, LQ = 101.0 ± 9.1) groups; no significant associations were found between injury status and YBT-UQ composite scores (r = -.08; p = .64) or YBT-LQ composite scores (r = -.24; p = .14). Preseason FMS composite score was associated with subsequent injury.

Background

Excessive gestational weight gain has increased over time and is resistant to intervention, especially in women living with overweight or obesity. This study described the process evaluation methods and findings from a behavioral lifestyle intervention for African American and white women living with overweight and obesity that spanned pregnancy (≤ 16 weeks gestation) through 6 months postpartum.

Methods

This study determined the relationship between high school athletes' maximal strength, jumping, and sprinting with shot put performance. High school athletes (n = 9; 16.9 ± 1 years; 110.4 ± 10.8 kg; 183.73 ± 9.33 cm) performed the broad jump, 1RM squat, 1RM bench, 40-yard dash with 10-yd split, and shot put. Responsive feeding, where parents are guided by children's hunger and satiation cues and provide appropriate structure and support for eating, is believed to promote healthier weight status. However, few studies have assessed prospective associations between observed parental feeding and toddler growth. We characterized toddler growth from 18 to 36 months and, in a subset of families, examined whether observed maternal responsiveness to toddler satiation cues and encouraging prompts to eat at 18 and 24 months were associated with toddler body mass index z-score (BMIz) from 18 to 36 months. Purpose: We examined three-month recovery from common negative effects of COVID-19 infection on select physical, functional, and psychosocial parameters among infected individuals and their implications for rehabilitation programs. Methods: Twenty-one subjects participated in this study. Four standardized questionnaires were used to assess dyspnea, physical, and psychosocial variables in this study. The post-test survey was conducted 90 days following the pre-test survey. Wilcoxon-Signed Rank test and paired t-test were used to compare the variables data between pre- and post-testing time points. The purpose of this study was to examine differences in mental health (stress and depression) and physical activity among female college students by sexual orientation. Students self-reported socio-demographic characteristics, physical activity, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms via an online survey. This study compared an expert supervised, fully resourced physical training (PT) program compared to a traditional physical training PT plan on Army Officer Candidate School (OSC) soldier fitness outcomes.
